What, if anything, would YOU do if you were the "Top Administrator" in the following situation:
You're the Top Guy/Girl in the "Your City" (a mythical city) School System where most students are minorities from low-income homes and a person who says he/she is a teacher in your school system (lets assume that to be true) posts the following on his/her Facebook or MySpace page:
 • Teacher "A" - Facebook entry stated he/she was "teaching chitlins in the ghetto" of Your City as one of his/her activities; listed drinking as one of his/her hobbies; and said " "I am teaching in the most ghetto school in Your City."

 • Teacher "B" - included photos of herself in sexually suggestive poses; and

 • Teacher "C" - a black male teacher who listed "Chillin wit my n---as!!!" as an activity; and had a suggestive exchange with a female "Facebook friend" accompanying a shirtless photo of himself.

What, if any, action would you, as TopGirl or TopGuy, take with respect to either A, B or C ???

AND/OR

What, if anything, would you, as a "responsible parent/guardian", want TopGirl or TopGuy to do ???

Simply let them know that you know about those pictures/entries.

This in turn will make them become more conscious and concerned about who else might know/see these posts and compel them to delete them.

Most people think that their professional lives and social lives are separate - when the realize that others (bosses, co-professionals, etc.) know about their logged social activities, the facebook posters are quick to delete or clean up their posts.

That said, I'd be a little concerned about A because "teaching chitlins in the ghetto" is straight up offensive.

As the administrator I'd have them in my office immediately and we would have a serious discussion about professionalism.

Teachers whether they want to be or not are role models by default, and while I'm not attempting to control how they live their private lives, the things they do that are potentially exposed to students is my direct responsibility.

I would also be concerned about their dedication to the students and to the job if they are making comments about "teaching chitlins" or "the most ghetto school in the city".

Along with giving them the necessary tools to succeed, good teachers also provide inspiration and a sense of being able to achieve to students, if the teacher doesn't believe in that the students never will. Moreover, just the fact that the teacher would have to meet with me as the top administrator should convey to them how serious and egregious their actions are deemed to be and should behoove them to straighten up their act immediately.

As a parent, the above is how I'd expect an administrator to handle that situation.

Teacher A - I would fire this teacher for racial insensitivity or put them on suspension/probation.
As a parent I would want them fired period.

Teacher B- If the teacher tried to keep her identity a secret I would suspend her or dismiss her depending on policy. If she was just doing it like the teacher posing nude on cruises shed be fired.

As a parent- she should be fired. Keep your whore business private. If you try to fuck my kid I will knock your teeth out bitch.

Teacher C - Probably suspended or fired depending on how inappropriate it was. You cant mix sex and kids. He is a public worker in a public facing position involving minors.
Parent- id want him repremanded or fired if he wasnt a good teacher.

Teacher A: probably fired for the quotes....what parent would respect this teacher.

Teacher B: Depends on the pictures...I understand that they are sexually suggestive...but a picture of someone blowing a kiss could be called sexually suggestive by some....so there is not enough info on that one...

Teacher C: As a teacher, the quote would be frowned on, but but his students probably say that everyday....and as long as the female facebook friend is of leagal age....and not a student, you cant fault a man for lookin for some ass...

I think I would let it be known to all of the teachers that I was aware of the happenings, and did not approve, but the only one that I would think would warrent termination based on the information provided would be teacher A.

i would give a final warning and suspend teacher a and b

that type of behavior is unprofessional and unacceptable...a year ago it was in the news that a student found a teacher's cellphone which had naughty pics on it...he was fired

being that these people are around children they are held to a higher standard

i would have a conversation with teacher c about his comments...if no changes i would pursue disciplinary action

obviously there is a problem with online conduct so i would have some type of workshop/training on what is the acceptable way to conduct yourself being a teacher...that way every knows what is expected of them

As a student I just found myself in a similar situation.

In my new wordpress blog lmwvent. I expressed desires, (although no direct threats), to cause damage to the school equipment and administrators. On Friday I was called into session with the Dean of academics where he, and five other administrators were meeting to decided whether i should be expelled or put on conduct probation. they even considered calling the FBI.

The strangest part is that I have never even held a live firearm in my life. I don't want to act out this frustration any more than I want to shave my tounge. I am almost baffled at the length they would go to prosecute my expression of feelings that are shared by half of the student body (they have confessed it to me afterwards).

With that in mind I would consider the following

Teacher A: Realize that that you, Que Ex, have long reported a similar preference to drinking on BGOL. It's not wise but it is understandable. Unless this teacher has had a history or suspicion of drinking on the job, leave it alone.

As far as the ghetto references, take a look at his track record. If students like him and have succeeded, then pull him aside. Show him the trouble his more controversial opinions might cause you and tell him to keep them less public. If he agrees and follows through forget the whole thing. Keep in mind that many of his more white PC colleges might have refused to teach at this school in the first place.

Teacher B is an exhibitionist. I would suggest you show him/her the photos and talk about them on a case by case basis. Frequently ask them "if these photo's became mainstream what would it do to your reputation as a teacher?" A lot of older folks don't realize the impact and publicity that the internet provides. Once they realize their folly they might become shamed enough to withdraw them.

If not, they get the boot. You have to question the wisdom and morals of people deliberately show naked pictures of themselves in places that their minor students can find them.

As for teacher C. Many white men who have black girlfriends or a plethora of black friends fall into the trap of being too familiar. They quickly forget that while their black friends and partners may have a special understanding which either excuses or even encourages these kind of sentiments, the world at large does not. I suggest bringing them back to Earth and showing them that they are not the special exception they see themselves as being. Make them understand the trials and tribulations their darker friends and significant others may have gone through just to be beside them. If this humbles them into acting right them give them a special chance. If not, then expel them.

Just my two cents.

I think that with facebook being a site where both teachers and students frequent teachers need to be aware that students can search you. Even if not the students in YOUR class, students in other classes can. As a representative of a PUBLIC school you need to take certain precautions. If you do want to have sexual or offensive material up you should have your privacy settings at their highest to avoid situations like this. Interesting article...

Teacher A: Immediate firing, if you don't stand up for the children you are teaching who will. How does that boost a child's moral if their teacher thinks of them as "the most ghetto?" That is disrespectful to the students and the community...

Teacher B: She would get reprimanded, i wouldn't suggest firing but definitely some sort of disciplinary action due to her her not taking precautions to avoid her students seeing her in a less than professional light.

Teacher C The use of profanities and such would be offensive to some parents and such, but I think his offense isn't as bad as the first teachers and he should face some disciplinary action as well, not to the extreme of firing, but definite reprimanding like teacher B...

I think that as a parent you know that you want your child's teachers to be role models for them, but sometimes forget they have a personal life. It's only when their personal life comes colliding with yours that you take notice. Would I want them reprimanded, yes because they should have taken measures to keep their private life out of the eyes of the students. And any teacher under the age of 30 knows that facebook is public.
