Question about Comcast

Lately I've noticed when I try to download from rapidshare or most other spots my DL will go smoothly and then just stop dead. Is this because of Comcast and their bandwidth capping or do I have an issue with my laptop?

Any help is appreciated.

Happens to me too during peak hours.....Mostly during the evening time!! Connection will go dead for a few minutes......

my downloads will hit 1+ megs with my rapidshare account or with megaupload...then that bitch will slow to a crawl...then bounce back up to the 700 to 900's.

it's cause comcast automatically throttles that shit.

fuckers.

Just buy your cd's, music, blu-ray movies all legally from the big box store or a site like amazon. If You would buy legally this would not become a problem.

This happens to me EVERYTIME I try to download from RapidShare while I'm connected through my router.

When I bypass the router, the download is smooth and doesn't stop on me.

:dunno:

this.

comcast has automatic throttling on an account that is drawing the most (read: too much) bandwith within a given area. if you have a sustained download of whatever is deemed over their limit they will automatically throttle you. your download speeds will eventually become normal. this most often happens during peak web usage times.

this tactic is targeted at those that use the most bandwith on comcast's network. that means most of us.

there has been much discussion here and on the net in general about this.

Although there can be a number of reasons that could be happen, the capping/killing reason is most unlikely...

You would have to provide a lot more details then you did, to even suggest what the problem could be.

Here are a few things that can cause your connection problem.

A poor connection from your line outside of your home to your cable modem.

Splitter(s) on the line the cable modem is connected to, increasing the interference in the signal to the cable modem (some cable modems have higher thresholds then others).

Poor network configuration on the host pc, or improper hardware configuration of them modem and/or router.

Provisioning inconsistencies with the cable modem (might be an issue if you bought a used modem, that was used on the relevant network before. It's not common, but I've seen it be an issue due to user error on the customers service end a couple times.)

And finally, (and most likely), it's due to comcast's upgrade to docsis 3.0. They have already completed the upgrade in some areas, and are still in the process in others (in case you didn't know, comcast has doubled their advertised speeds, and offer 50MB premium service now...)

These are just a handful of basic reasons that could be your particular issue... There's no way to even begin telling you what to check without more information.

This is highly unlikely... I highly doubt he's being throttled by downloading off the web, and not something like torrents, ftp, usenet, live streaming, or some other extremely high bandwith allocating activity. He'd have to be downloading literally 100's of gigs off of web based hosts to encounter this, in addition to doing something like seeding torrents.

Any given month I'm transferring around a terabyte of data (at least), (I know their stated limit is 200 gigs, but I've never been effected by this. I think it's an arbitrary number that they use to legally take action (disconnecting service, etc) against people they suspect of abusing (what ever they consider abusing) the service...

you are missing what i stated.

i am not talking about about total amount of data downloaded. i am talking about rate of bandwith being used at a given moment.

read up buddy:

In line with their traffic management website Comcast has confirmed to us they've installed their new broadband throttling system across all markets. The system, which we first profiled back in September, throttles a user's connection if a particular CMTS port is congested, and if that user has been identified as a primary reason why. This two-condition throttling system replaces Comcast's old, FCC-criticized system of using forged TCP packets to throttle upstream P2P services for all users, regardless of consumption.

i see why u are so unliked here. for you to be a grown man you are definitely on the shallow end of maturity.

seriously, do you honestly think I give a fuck if I'm liked on the fucking internet?? Seriously?? Think that over...dwell on that and come to a "reasonable" conclusion. Inorder to help you come to this conclusion I will provide you with the following material... Eat shit Die... there you go... now back to my "Who the fuck is UGA going to get next" link:hmm:

Did you read my entire post, or just responding to a piece of it...

But since you put it out there, do you understand the context of how it works? Did you read my other post?

What he's experiencing is HIGHLY unlikely due to throttling. I can guarantee he's not using 70% of his sustained down stream for 15 minutes straight downloading from the mirrors on rapidshare. From what he's describing he's doing, this wouldn't even be a consideration...

This system is mainly responsible for throttling p2p traffic, and other sustained high speed data transfers (try something more like a 20 gig download at 10mbs, and even though it's still HIGHLY unlikely you'd experience at total disconnect with the client), and would have an almost non-existent effect on downloading from websites alone...
