Prince - Nothing Compares 2 U (Original Version)

I've been keeping my eye out for cats who could make a legitimate claim to the musical throne that Prince left vacant.

D'Angelo was the first cat I thought could make a legit claim, the musicianship and songwriting is there but his pace and bad habits probably eliminate him serious consideration.

Martin Luther (McCoy) former guitarist for The Roots made a big splash with his 2004 LP Rebel Soul Music, but he quickly fell off the musical map after that.

Van Hunt is an intriguing candidate, capable lead man, multi instrumentalist and solid songwriter. Just hasn't been able to break through to popular appeal

The main thing these cats lack is Band leader aspect that Prince and James Brown really showcased.

Who else is out there ?

Back in the early 2k's I would've agreed with this list. At one point I thought Janelle Monae had a shot at the title based on her first full album and energetic live performances. Unfortunately she started trying to make pop hits and chasing acting jobs. Right now I don't see anyone. Maybe the r&b, funk, and soul genres are dead. The next so-called genius may be coming from a different genre like EDM.

None of them had the control and mastership of the instrument. Beck threw hiss hit also. I will say Jack White is the brother from another mother of Prince.

Jack White is interesting. His collaborations are interesting and diverse but does he have a signature or iconic sound? Not talking about his guitar playing but his overall sound. He seems like he just moves from one variation of rock and blues or country.

He's definitely got the eccentric thing down.

Peace,

Kids don't get to try to play instruments

Yes and no.

Many schools saw state funding for music programs get slashed during the Reagan era and beyond.

But in some school districts they absolutely do (like the ones I attended and taught in). Most of those kids (and their parents) simply weren’t interested in putting in the hours that were required to gain proficiency.

My god the talent of this man. And I like his version better than O'Connor's, much more soul to it.

Yes, he clearly has a signature, iconic sound, and writing style and has the out put. I mean all music sound is a variation of rock, blues, country, specially of we are talking about Prince's sound.
