Prayers for Chris Johnson

Man life can be cruel. A prayer that modern medicine can help this man live the best possible life he can under these circumstances.
Praying for his family, this is devastating for everyone involved
Exactly. There are no prayers for life with ALS. Eric Dane was just in Bad Boys Ride of Die in 2024 and his health declined rapidly, as just about everyone does who was unfortunate enough to get ALS. It is quite literally a fate worse than death

As my dude said, all you can do is pray for his family at this point

Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) is not something a person "gets" from a specific action or exposure; rather, it is a progressive neurological disease. In about 90% of cases, ALS occurs randomly (sporadic ALS) with no known cause. The remaining 5% to 10% are hereditary (familial ALS).

Medical experts believe ALS develops from a complex interaction of genetic and environmental factors. Key factors include:Genetics: In familial cases, a gene mutation is passed down from a biological parent. Even in sporadic cases, spontaneous genetic mutations are often involved. The most common mutated gene linked to ALS is C9orf72.

Environmental Exposures: Long-term exposure to certain environmental toxins—such as heavy metals, agricultural chemicals, and pesticides—is suspected to increase the risk of developing ALS.

Military Service: Veterans have a higher statistical risk of developing ALS. This is thought to be tied to potential exposures to toxins (like lead, chemicals, or burn pits) or other service-related stressors.

Trauma: Repetitive head injuries and traumatic brain injuries (TBIs) have been identified as potential risk factors, which explains the slightly elevated rates seen among some professional athletes.

Lifestyle: Smoking is widely considered the most prominent behavioral risk factor, particularly among women after menopause.

Sporadic ALS (90% of cases): This occurs randomly with no known family history or clear cause. Scientists point to an "exposome"—a cumulative lifetime interaction between genetic susceptibility and environmental factors, such as long-term exposure to toxins, heavy metals, or certain chemicals. Other potential triggers or risk factors include a history of smoking, severe head trauma, or military service.

Just did a re.ddit search...... interesting things developing.....

And no stem cells do not work, but human neurons and high dose b12 trials are showing promise.
Man nothing works. I hate to be Mr. Negative, but the reality is that nothing works.

At least nothing that I've seen. Once they tell you that you have it, it's a death sentence. They can only guesstimate how much time you'll have left.

And depending on the version that one has, it hits very fast. Last year he was a fully functioning adult, now he's a vegetable.

I've seen it first hand, you're a fully able adult. And less than a year later you can't even swallow food.

It's a very horrible disease with no cure in sight.

There's awareness, and also billions of dollars donated to science every year. But still no cure, the best they gave is small delays until the inevitable.

This is why,I don't understand these players not bring shit like this during the CBA. They're more worried about getting as much money as possible than looking out for the players coming after them.

At,some point you gotta put your foot down and be like I'm tired of these owners keeping shit from us. The oners knew about the dangers of CTE for years yet the players still wanna act cowardly towards the owners. Then, years later they wanna go on these podcasts, radio and TV bad mouthing these owners for not giving them health insurance and etc after they play ball.

I almost missed this thread
OMG, damn thats sad :(
Honestly.....after watching that video.....I don't even know what to say :(

It's divide and conquer. The haves and the have nots. The reason why a lot of the contracts as far as the CBA gets signed is because they position they have nots against the haves.

The haves know that it's a shitty deal, but the have nots are going to cave during any labor dispute because they are check to check. They can't afford to miss one.

To me, the players should have never allowed the owners to add a 17th game, much less the 18th game we're going to get in the near future. The owners say, "Here's a couple extra pennies," and now we have 17 games. And what did they trade it for?

Weed. They traded a 17th game for weed.

Of all the major sports, football is the most violent. They should have at the very least 75% guarantee contracts and forever healthcare, and any voiding of that guarantee has got to be proven detrimental for faking it.

And health Care for NFL players is weak. What, no coverage 5 years after retirement. That might be why Phillip Rivers returned, quiet as it's kept. He gets to restart his insurance.

Most of these players gave their entire bodies to the sport, the very least that can be done is giving them healthcare for the rest of their lives, especially to players who played 3 years or more.

Damn - your friend's family has been through alot with 3 people.

Glad to hear your friend is still battling.
Thanks Funk! Yeah bruh, he still here battling especially after all he's been through losing his mother and brother who he was extremely close to. Most people would have gave up. We almost lost him when Covid first started. They did not diagnose him with Covid at the time but we believe that's what he had. When we were at the hospital I just told him fight your ass off bruh, shit there's still life to live. Sit around and watch movies and football all day lol, idc we need you here.

In 2015 the NFL reached a landmark settlement. Players are and have been compensated, but many still receive the runaround.

The bolded part is one that's hard to prove, and seems how the league avoids paying hundreds of millions of dollars.

NFL Concussion Settlement

All Valid Claims of Retired NFL Football Players to be Paid in Full for 65 Years

Monetary Awards, Baseline Medical Exams and Other Benefits Provided

A federal court authorized this Notice. This is not a solicitation from a lawyer.

The Settlement will provide eligible retired players with:

• Baseline neuropsychological and neurological exams to determine if retired players are: a)

currently suffering from any neurocognitive impairment, including impairment serious enough for

compensation, and b) eligible for additional testing and/or treatment ($75 million);

• Monetary awards for diagnoses of ALS (Lou Gehrig’s disease), Parkinson’s Disease, Alzheimer’s

Disease, early and moderate Dementia and certain cases of chronic traumatic encephalopathy

(CTE) (a neuropathological finding) diagnosed after death. The maximum monetary awards range

from $1.5 million to $5 million depending on the diagnosis. There is no cap on the amount of funds

available to pay these Monetary Awards and all valid claims will be paid in full for 65 years; and

• Education programs promoting safety and injury prevention with respect to football players,

including safety-related initiatives in youth football, the education of retired players regarding the

NFL’s medical and disability programs and other educational programs and initiatives ($10

million).

• Authorized representatives of deceased, legally incapacitated or incompetent retired players and family

members of retired players who meet certain criteria may also file claims for monetary awards (see

Question 6).

• To get money, proof that injuries were caused by playing NFL football is not required.

In a landmark 2015 settlement, the National Football League promised to compensate former players who developed dementia and other brain diseases tied to concussions. The NFL has since awarded $1.2 billion to more than 1,600 athletes. But The Washington Post found the league saved hundreds of millions of dollars by rejecting payouts. Will Hobson, who reported the story, joined Amna Nawaz for more.

You're welcome.

Credit to you for giving him the pep talk to fight his ass off. That's real friendship given all he's been through, and losing 2 of the people closest to him.

One of my best friends is a Vietnamese guy in his early 70s. I've known him for 18 years this summer. Heart of gold. He had carbon monoxide poisoning back in the late-70s / early-80s, some other health issues, and had a stroke 10 years ago wherein he was hospitalized for 2 months relearning how to speak (and his speech was already impaired from the brain injury decades prior). He's good people and when he's expressed feeling down, I give him the pep talk too. Tell him he's doing well, and that people value his friendship.

I help him look out for stuff like eating properly, staying on top of his bills, etc. He's got a support worker but she's only around 1 - 2 times monthly, so I check in with him a few times a week to make sure he's good.

A lot of Google search results nowadays is just aggregated AI opinions, which often have little facts to back it up.
yeah, no different than what we're saying in here.

None of us are doctors on this board.

I never said anything was factual.

I was just giving my opinion about it.

But nonetheless, prayers go out to him and his family.

This was sad to see

It happens so fast. Saw it with Steve McMichael.
There are many diseases that will make me pick up a gun and take the initiative. If I were to get that diagnosis, I’m asking for a credit limit increase, and I’m going to do the Lord’s Work.

I tried my best not to engage with someone who posted a similar comment elsewhere
and I’m gone take the high road because I know you mean well
But this has sparked a whole different conversation about “God “
Sir, with all due respect, what I posted isn't up for debate or discussion. You have your beliefs and I have mine. Have a blessed day.
