It's not about the South or the North. It's the artform as a whole. It's been popularized and mass-marketed to the Ofay's so they corporations will market whatever the fuck they like seeing us do. I think it's beyond repair though. And thankfully it's being absolutely destroyed. Retail is about to be obsolete and the corporations are getting the fuck out of the business because profits are shrinking. The real money will be made from touring (already is) and LONG-TERM sales. Flash in the pan records have no shelf life. Like Jeezy said which I applauded (yes, I listen to EVERYTHING) "I'm not trying to sell 10 million records, I'm tryna sell a million records 10 times". It probably went over most of HIS fanbases head, but that approach will make him so much more successful than a Hammer or Vanilla Ice who have sales that are incomparable. Dudes don't even have enough material to put on a whole show. That's why U2, The Rolling Stones etc... can get looooooooong paper still....

Hip-hop now is pretty wack in general. Aside from a few artists it's just about promoting a product, be it an album, TV Johnny, or whatever. I'm not from the south so all that grill shit doesn't appeal to me. I grew up on the fact that lyricism and being original were the most important aspects of hip hop, regardless of the song's subject matter. As for rapping about the usual bullshit, that's always been a part of hip hop, it's just the kids growing up now have grown accustomed to the stuff we see as bullshit. I have mad respect for southern rappers who can rap, but the truth is 90 percent of those cats can't battle, they probably can't spit unwritten, that's just the way it is. maybe in the future that will change but i don't see it going in that direction. I can understand some of the New York frustration with dipset and that mims bullshit because they do paint an inaccurate picture of what New York Hip Hop is. At the same time I think the south is so big right now because people are getting tired of the same raps over and over again. They also bring a new dance aspect to hip hop that New York can't do. the south will probably be wack again in a few years and mtv will find some new ATL to promote. that's just how it goes.
As for the Coon thing. I think it's a cop out. there are people out there consciously selling their souls for a buck (*cough*BET) that deserve that label more than young joc.
