Actually, I sound like someone with experience visiting, working and living in countries outside of the USA.
In poor countries like the DR, Americans, Canadians, Europeans, and Australians are prime targets for crime because they assume people from those places are wealthy. Sometimes the crime is violent.
Anybody who has spent time traveling extensively (I've only about 5-6 countries under my belt, not a world traveler by any means) would know that.
Common senses is always necessary.
This does not negate what I said. Perhaps the difference in vocabularies is an impediment to effective communication. Oh well.

True story: about 15 years ago, I used to talk regularly with this spectacularly sexy chick I met on facebook. She was living and working in Germany, but was actually of Dominican heritage. I never got it straight how she ended up in Germany, my guess is a Dominican was her dad.
She warned me NOT to visit the DR alone.
That said, I used to visit a popular ex-pat forum focused on living in the DR.
It was not uncommon to see conversations about gringos ending up dead in and around tourist areas.
What is alarming is that there are/were neighborhoods where gringos congregated that were being targeted.
People tend to be far less aggressive in day to day interactions in every country I have visited ( I cannot speak for El Salvador), and most countries don't allow people to buy assault rifles at the local pawn shop.
This, I think, lulls Americans into a false sense of security. I actually got my stupid ass into a cab with someone I met THAT DAY in Panama once, and ended up arguing with the guy after he tried to run a scam on me. I ended up alone in a cab with a non English speaking cab driver in Curundu.
I immediately realized how FUCKING STUPID I had been, but the mistake had already been made.
I got lucky. I could have disappeared without a trace quite easily that day.

But women put themselves in a vulnerable position when vultures are around. I know a girl that went to Vegas with a group of friends. One got pretty fucked up and wanted to leave with a group of guys they met. The other 3 said no, but allowed the drunk girl to leave with the men. She said they tried to stop her, but she became aggressive. So they let her leave. She showed up the next day at the hotel and didn't say shit to her friends. Unfriended them on social media. When asked why she was tripping. She said she went through some shit that night. Basically blamed them for letting her leave.
3.Prob not the best idea to be a man and leave intoxicated with a chic. Because if some shit go down. You better be able to clearly explain what happened. And as mentioned before. Even the men can be set up by locals.

You should get a passport. Punta Cana is safer than Philly just don’t go galavanting with drunk white men in the middle of the night.
I've lived here for years, outlived a lot of people that are no longer here. I know my way around philly and I've been to many parts of philly as well.
DR meanwhile is a different story, first of all, I don't talk their language, second of all, I don't like the fact women want money from men, third of all, there's been a lot of reports in DR about things being bad down there and blaming that shit on the liquor won't change a thing about it being bad over there. Also, I've been drunk as fuck a few times in my life around my friends and cousins partying and even once by myself which I still was able to get home safety or help from friends and family which I know the outcome wouldn't be the same had I've been in DR. But I'm also proud of the fact that I no longer drink anymore and have been sober for years.
That's anywhere in the world, including Philly...lol
And in terms of crime you still have a MUCH greater chance of getting robbed, killed etc in Philly than you ever would in DR.

Fair enough, but I'm not the only one who feels this way though about DR.
News reports do keep people informed, that could steer people away from going there or help them be aware of the dangers.
Also, there's been deaths on the resort as well with people renting AirBNB with some of these deaths being suspicious.
Also, there's plenty of other countries to visit as well that people can go to. It's just the fact they've made DR popular.
Yet, this women we don't even know if she will be found alive or not being at DR.
As someone who has traveled extensively, I concur.
What people don't seem to realize is that many of these Caribbean, South, and Central American countries are poverty-stricken. So poverty-stricken that you are a walking ATM to the hard boys. The police and courts are so corrupt and clogged criminals' chances are better robbing and killing your ass than getting a job if they can even find one. What you consider short money might be a week's or month's salary to them. And if by some miracle they are caught, tried, and convicted jail aint shit and they probably won't serve that long anyway.
Yes, keep your head on a swivel, and don't be afraid to travel but use common sense. I'd love to see Somalia but come on man.

Wise words, im not sure why most people dont consider this poverty issue when they go to this countries or island and within 50ft from leaving the resort u see people living in shanty houses with aluminum roofs and no windows, how can you think that they arent in poverty and that a 20 dollar bill could feed their family for a day or two. That same person leaving the resort going into the native area is fresh meat. I learned this lesson many years in during my first trip to Montego Bay rocking my new gear and jewelry in the downtown area, i felt the eyes on me and know i needed to get back to the resort asap.

Then they want to try to compare your city with these other countries especially somewhere that people are familiar with and know their way around their own city since they've been born and raised there. Also, I never once said my city isnt dangerous but I know my way around there to avoid those parts and also there's plenty of safe spots in Philly to go to.
