Peter Gunz gets real about thier publishing deal and how they fell off....damn

MJ wasn't trying to hook them niggas up. He had to keep the Jesus Juice flowing in them sippy cups.

this business doesn't work like that...
it doesn't matter what the intention was -Steely Dan could have hit their pockets just for performing the song and altering the work without permission - no matter if its for sale or not - a vet in in the industry KNOWS better

So if you just PERFORM the song you in trouble?

lets say kids having an assembly at their elementary school graduation sing

I believe I can fly

and change the lyrics a little to make it about their school

and the school records it and SELLS it to the parents...

they could be SUED?????

That's a good one. Here's what happened with 2 Live Crew: Roy Orbison's people got at them for their use of "Oh Pretty Woman", even though they switched up the lyrics to "dick sucking woman" and "bald headed woman", and shit like that. IIRC, the judge ruled it a parody, because they were singing the same melody with different lyrics, kind of like Weird Al. As for the financial outcome, I never got the full story, because we were still on tour at the time, so I'll have to look it up.

// DE LA SOUL V. THE TURTLES//

IN 1991, MARK VOLMAN AND HOWARD KAYLAN OF THE 1960’S BAND THE TURTLES SUED HIP HOP GROUP DE LA SOUL FOR USING A 12-SECOND SNIPPET OF THEIR FAIRLY UNKNOWN SONG “YOU SHOWED ME” AS PART OF AN 1989 TRACK ON DE LA SOUL'S ALBUM3 FEET HIGH AND RISING, “TRANSMITTING LIVE FROM MARS”, EVEN THOUGH VOLMAN AND KAYLAN DIDN’T WRITE “YOU SHOWED ME”.

NONETHELESS, VOLMAN AND KAYLAN SUED DE LA FOR $2.5 MILLION. THE CASE WAS SETTLED OUT OF COURT, WITH DE LA SOUL PAYING VOLMAN AND KAYLAN $141,666.67 PER SECOND FOR A SLIVER OF A LONG-FORGOTTEN SONG. THIS IS AN EXAMPLE OF THE RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN HIP HOP AND THE LAW THAT GREW IN THE 1980’S WHEN OLDER ARTISTS REALIZED THAT OLD SONGS THAT HAD LONG STOPPED PRODUCING ROYALTY CHECKS COULD SUDDENLY YIELD A BIG PAYCHECK. SO, EVEN THOUGH DE LA TOTALLY FLIPPED THE 12-SECOND SAMPLE AND TURNED IT INTO A TOTALLY NEW SONG BEARING NO RESEMBLANCE TO THE ORIGINAL TURTLES TRACK, COPYRIGHT LAWREQUIRED THEM TO PAY ARTISTS [NOT SONGWRITERS] VOLMAN AND KAYLAN, $1.7 MILLION.

never understood that. fuck a chick that is 3-5 steps below you and then you get her pregnant on top of that? I remember hearing somewhere that some well-to-do person fed, poor people don't know how to do shit but fuck and get high. it's not entirely true... And it's not entirely false

Underneath it all water always seeks its own level. No matter how a person carries themselves, speaks, etc. The real them can always be exposed in who they get with, especially after they have resources to get something better.
