Jameis Winston wasn’t trolling with his crab-legs photo. He got them from a ‘Deadliest Catch’ captain.
There are many reasons people dislike Jameis Winston, the No. 1 pick of Thursday’s NFL draft, but his posting of a photo to Instagram in front of a plate of crab legs on Thursday night should not be one of them, according to former NFL quarterback Shaun King.
<blockquote class="twitter-tweet" lang="en"><p lang="en" dir="ltr">If people only knew how STUPID they sound killing this kid over that picture smdh</p>— shaun king (@realshaunking) <a href="https://twitter.com/realshaunking/status/594151024903860224">May 1, 2015</a></blockquote> <script async src="//platform.twitter.com/widgets.js" charset="utf-8"></script>
King, as well as Tampa Bay Times reporter Rick Stroud, offered a perfectly reasonable, albeit odd, explanation for the photo, which many took as an immature allusion to the time Winston was busted for stealing crab legs from a grocery store as an Florida State student.
The picture, according to King and Stroud, had nothing to do with trolling, but with trawling. Winston posted the picture as a courtesy to Capt. Keith Colburn, star of “The Deadliest Catch,” who reportedly sent Winston 25 pounds of crab legs as a gift for his draft party.
See, Colburn and Winston are apparently friendly. Three weeks ago, according to Stroud, Colburn asked Winston for help auction off a king crab at the Mike Alstott Charity Auction. Winston “took the gesture in self-deprecating good nature,” Stroud reports, which led Colburn then to send Winston the 25 pounds of crab legs for his party on Thursday.
