My mother was a raised by a couple who knew my biological grandmother and when my mom gave birth to they legally adopted me to help her out. I was specifically told by my grandmother - the one who raised me and my mother - that my mother had threaten my father that if he ever showed his face she'd shoot him dead. I still to this day don't if was because she was shaken by the experience of being pregnant for the first time - or whatever which I don't want to imagine.
when I turned 20 I met him and his other family of 3 brothers and 3 sisters. At his funeral last year I discovered there were at least 2 other children he raised as his own. I sometimes wonder how I differently I would have been ..

I didn’t find out I had a stepsister until I went to my fathers funeral about 10-12 years ago, I’d actually forgotten about her until I saw this thread. I wasnt even gonna go to the funeral because he hadnt been in my life since I was a baby but my mom kinda guilted me into going. Me and my brother and sister get to the place and they want “his kids” to ride in the front limousine, we get in there and another woman is already in there. No one ever said this is your sister or anything but I was reading the funeral obituary and saw four names instead of three when it listed his kids. We never talked to her at the funeral or at his parents house after the funeral, I don’t even remember her name or even what she looks like. Where I come from most men have children with numerous women. Its the norm. My Dad had kids with 3 women. My Grandfather had 16 kids with 3 wives. All lived in a compound house and each wife had her own house. He was the village chief. I have a friend whose father went thru 7 wives and 40 children.

This Western notion/construction of 1 man, 1 wife and just 1 nuclear family is a construction that often does not apply.

Grandma was the one creeping. My grand parents had my uncle in1943. My grand dad went to WW2 and my grandma had my uncle in 1945 he was light skinned and half Cuban. My grand dad came back to the states and married my grandmother and accepted the outside baby. They both made my mom and 5 more kids. Both my grandparents raised me and I was a momma's boy so I always favored my grandma. As the years go by I started to like grandma less and grandfather more.

Never really bother me much; just to think that he had other kids, adopted two, and there I was less than hour's drive away.

Come to discover later on that I actually went to High School, and was in the Band, with two of my first cousins.

around 3 out the blue i got 3 teenage half-brothers living in a one bedroom apartment. my dad had 4 sons in 3 years with 3 different women (one passed away)
I've always been a bit of an asshole so i didnt like that shit. Went from being the oldest child to being picked on. Conversely my younger brother was a baby so they were around him from the jump and he had a much better relationship with them

it took years for us to really get close. it really happened when we are all adults and peers (married, kids, drinking, etc.) It took awhile for them to not see my as the annoying little brother and for me to see them as just my big bros.
