Palm Pre Owners Step This Way

 Does the palm pre have a video recorder yet?
On a serious note palm dropped the fucking ball on this device.

No video. No visual voicemail.

Precorder Video Recorder app works fine on the Palm Pre. Everyone knows homebrew apps is very simple to install on the Pre and only a fool wouldn't do it. Yes, Video recording ain't on there stock but the last update gave the foundation coding for it.... I unno why so long. :smh:

Visual Voicemail? hmmmm, depends. Since now Sprint allows call forwarding for free, alot of people use their GoogleVoice voicemail for their regular Sprint line and there's several apps to use to read the voicemails...

this almost borderline WinMo.... not as nowhere bad, but still. Android started off slow too.... (especially when the G1 first dropped).

yeah... borderline tho. Atleast the tweaks and patching is alot easier on the Pre, and you can do it on the run. With WinMo, it seem like alot of stuf was a pain in the ass... then at the end of day, it still wouldn't work right. LOL.

Worst part bout WinMo was that all da tweaks & apps you would use to fix shit would end up taking away from ur resources, leaving you upset about it running slow which is part of what you were trying to fix in the 1st place. It was a vicious cycle I no longer could deal with.

App Spotlight: Radiotime
radiotme.png

Handset makers building FM tuners into phones is a barbaric and uncivilized practice, as Radiotime demonstrates by giving access to the online feeds of hundreds of thousands of terrestrial radio station feeds, talk radio, podcasts, and more.

There's a lot to like about Radiotime, and one of my favorite things is the fact that it's location aware, meaning that dialing into local radio is actually easier than using a standard FM tuner since the program automatically finds your location and displays a list of accessible radio stations.

The user interface is another part of the program that really shines, and navigation is a breeze. It's easy to go back to the top level of the menu structure by tapping the top banner, and the "now playing" notification follows you around while navigating through the application in the form of a small pop-up banner. The program also provides limited transport controls, with pause being the only option, in the dashboard.

There is also an online component that allows you to manage favorites (similar to mediafly) and listen to internet radio through your browser. You can create an account on the device immediately after launching the program, giving you the ability to add favorites on the device, and access ones you've added online

The one thing that was disappointment was the limited Podcast supportCurrently, there are 5 preset podcasts, with no way to add others. I would really like to see the ability add podcasts integrated into the app, as I think it would vastly increase the utility of the program.

Best of all, the application is ad supported, and not in an obnoxious way. This is a very solid program the price of having to look at small banner ads sometimes.

It's in the app catalog but I had to use the following path to find it:
Explore -->Music -->Radio/Broadcast

It's nice but it has a lot of radio stations missing thoough.....I'll take it anyway

been running for a week too

Palm Readies WebOS Update

In addition to releasing new webOS firmware, Palm is boosting its developer tools to better compete against BlackBerry and the iPhone.

In order to better compete in the smartphone space, Palm is preparing to release a software update for its webOS devices and it is also trying to make it easier for developers to create compelling content.

During its earnings call Friday, CEO Jon Rubenstein said the 1.3.5 software will feature numerous improvements for the Pre and Pixi smartphones. He said it will "let customers download and store more applications, enhance Wi-Fi and application performance, improve battery life, and increase Pixi's speed and responsiveness." Rubenstein didn't say when this firmware would be released, but it could be around the Consumer Electronics Show in early January.

Once the king of the U.S. smartphone markets, Palm has been getting hammered by the likes of Apple and Research In Motion, and it has reported 10 consecutive quarterly losses. The Pre and Pixi handsets have produced solid sales, but not enough to bring the company to profitability. Both devices have been exclusive to Sprint Nextel, but the Pre is expected to land on Verizon Wireless in early 2010, and this could boost sales due to the larger potential audience.

One of the reasons webOS devices trail the competition is the lack of mobile programs in its App Catalog. While Palm's store has over 800 applications, Android Market has more than 20,000 apps, and Apple's App Store has more than 100,000 programs.

To combat this, the company recently released a developer tool called Ares that enables content creators to build apps using only their Web browsers. This is in line with the company's larger developer strategy, as the platform is built on standard Web technologies like HTML, CSS, and JavaScript. Palm is hoping this approach will attract Web developers because it makes it easier to create apps with little experience in the mobile field.

webOS 1.3.5 Coming Today?

Palm confirmed they will be highlighting webOS 1.3.5 at CES next year, but it looks as if it might be released as early as today. According to Sprint’s site, a December 28th is the release date for webOS 1.3.5. Nothing from Palm yet, but this seems to be a sign that it’s coming sometime today. Let us know if you are greeted with a webOS 1.3.5 OTA update today.

What can you expect from webOS 1.3.5:

* Improvement in battery life optimization when in marginal coverage areas.
* QCELP capability fix to allow play and audio of video sent via MMS.
* Launch Google Maps or Sprint Nav when tapping an address from contacts.
* Minimized package of MR size through binary difference. Customers can now download over 2G connections if necessary.

HOLY SHIT!!!!! This shit is definitely faster now. Menus pop up & respond before your finger leaves the screen. The app store loads up real fast & there are no delays for the app to install either.

final stages of deciding between a pre and a droid leaning towards droid. Im coming from a treo i need help figuring out which is better....

Anybody have problems not being able to install patches after the update ? none of the patches seem to want to install. I crashed the phone earlier and had to use webos doctor to restore it....fucking around and had Itunes and Songbird running at the same time. i guess both programs were trying to get @ the phone and fucked it up. I used WEBOS doctor to recover the phone and had to reinstall the latest update over again. Now the patches won't install, even in dev mode. Phnoe runs better though. Lost some booty pic and music but I wanted to take all that shit off anyway.
