Talk about a bitch move.

Chess grandmaster takes selfie with opponent... then reports her for using phone

As she sat down for a match with the world’s No1 chess player Magnus Carlsen, Alua Nurman could not resist asking for a selfie.

To the 18-year-old grand master’s delight, Carlsen agreed and leaned across the chess board with a broad grin as she took the cheeky photograph.

But that’s where the fun stopped for Nurman. Carlsen got up from the table, tracked down a judge and reported her for flouting a strict ban on mobile phones.

The awkward moment occurred at Germany’s Grenke chess festival, where all electronic devices were banned to prevent players from cheating.

Carlsen, 35, faced a dilemma when his young rival asked for the selfie: refuse and look curmudgeonly in front of the crowd, or reward her for flouting the phone ban.

In the end, the Norwegian five-time world chess champion opted for the middle route: agreeing to the selfie but then reporting Nurman’s cavalier behaviour to the judges.

Footage posted on social media shows Carlsen crossing the room to find a judge and then leading him back to the game table, where the judge demanded that Nurman gave up her phone.

Nurman, a Kazakh grandmaster who is a World Women’s Team Chess Championship silver medallist, appeared to have found the funny side in the end.

When she later posted the selfie on Instagram, she wrote “Magnus stays Magnus”, in what seemed to be a light-hearted reference to him being a stickler for the rules.

The young grandmaster added she had been inspired by another player who had attempted the same stunt with Carlsen recently.

“Last year, Etienne Bacrot also took a selfie,” she told the website ChessBase India, referring to a French chess grandmaster. “I thought like, why not? I’m very grateful that Magnus agreed to this.”

The incident has prompted a debate in the online chess community as to whether Carlsen – or for that matter Nurman – was in the wrong.

Some suggested that Carlsen was being pedantic by reporting the presence of a mobile phone at the game table, but others noted the strict ban applied to all players.

While there is no suggestion that Nurman intended to cheat, less scrupulous players have long exploited mobile phones in chess tournaments.

The simplest cheating tactic is to download an app such as Stockfish and use it as a guide to choose the best moves during toilet breaks.

Cheaters could also use their phones to communicate with an accomplice by connecting it to an earpiece or receiving coded messages via the phone’s vibrations.

The practice has become so widespread that some chess tournaments use phone-detecting wands to “sweep” the players and the game area before a match can begin. Other contests allow players to keep their phone, but only if it is switched off.

With cash prizes of up to £58,000 on offer at the Grenke festival, one can imagine why its organisers enforce the ban on mobile phones and other devices with such gusto.

Unfortunately for Nurman, her selfie did not affect the outcome of the match; Carlsen won.

Yeah, I remember this story. In essence his evidence was, the flock cameras show you coming in town and then "quickly" leaving town giving her a narrow window of time to steal the package.

On the ring video footage there is the silhouette of a woman that could possibly resemble her but ots not the clearest and nowhere in the video do you see the person get into a Green Rivian EV Truck..... they walk out of frame.

The woman's Rivian cameras showed that yes she drove through the town, but she made no stops. And that she then went to her tailor's shop in a nearby town, then straight home.

IIRC she even used her Rivian and home camera footage to prove she never took anything out of her vehicle resembling the stolen package.

It makes you wonder how many innocent (black) people were accused and convicted of a crime, just because they drove/walked/ biked through the wrong town on the wrong day. Yet, they didn't have camera technology available at the time to exonerate them.

Devils Lake native accused of killing her newborn baby 45 years ago in Valley City

VALLEY CITY, N.D. (KVLY/Gray News) - A woman in North Dakota was charged with murder decades after her newborn was found dead on a college campus in 1981, according to authorities.

On April 16, 1981, a newborn girl was found in a wooded area behind the Valley City State College campus. The infant had a plastic covering over her face, with her umbilical cord still attached.

An autopsy conducted the following day found the infant had been alive at birth and died from acute asphyxia, consistent with suffocation. Valley City police named the infant “Rebecca” when she was interred.

For decades, investigators followed numerous leads but could not identify the baby or a suspect.

Rebecca’s body was exhumed in July 2019. DNA extracted from her remains was sent to third-party labs for familial and genealogical analysis.

By August 2020, investigators had received a genetic genealogy report pointing to possible relatives of Rebecca. That investigation eventually led to Nancy Jean Trottier.

In an October 2021 interview, Trottier, who attended Valley City State College from 1978 to 1982, became emotional and told investigators, “maybe it was me,” and “It could be, maybe it was me,” according to the affidavit.

Trottier consented to providing a DNA sample. Her husband’s DNA was collected separately via search warrant in December 2021.

In June 2023, the North Dakota State Crime Lab returned results. According to the affidavit, DNA analysis showed it is 3.481 quadrillion times more likely that Rebecca was the biological child of Trottier and her husband than an unrelated individual from the general population.

DNA consistent with Trottier’s profile was also found on tissue paper recovered from the scene in 1981.

A preliminary hearing and arraignment are scheduled for May 21, 2026, at 1 p.m

Austin Louis Hayward, 31, was arrested April 15 and charged with one count of written or electronic threat to kill or do bodily harm.

BOYNTON BEACH, Fla. (CBS12) — A Florida man was arrested after investigators said he sent Discord messages threatening to kill co-workers he identified as Haitian at a Boynton Beach job site, according to a Palm Beach County Sheriff’s Office probable cause affidavit.

Austin Louis Hayward, 31, was arrested April 15 and charged with one count of written or electronic threat to kill or do bodily harm, a felony, the affidavit states. The arrest report lists his address in Boynton Beach.
Detectives wrote that the investigation began April 14 after a complainant contacted the sheriff’s office on behalf of an anonymous friend and reported that Hayward had been messaging on Discord that he wanted to kill his Haitian co-workers. Investigators said the person provided screenshots of messages allegedly sent by Hayward under the username “Poo cake.”

According to the affidavit, the messages included statements about killing co-workers, severing heads and striking one person with a car. Investigators wrote that the messages showed an escalation in aggression and a desire to carry out violence.

The affidavit says a witness who had known Hayward for more than a decade confirmed the Discord account and told deputies he believed Hayward could be dangerous. Investigators also said Discord confirmed that the phone number and email associated with the account matched information tied to Hayward.
When deputies went to Hayward’s Boynton Beach residence shortly after midnight April 15, they made contact with him outside a trailer at the home, the report says. After being advised of his rights, Hayward confirmed his phone number, email addresses and Discord username, according to investigators.

Hayward told deputies he worked as an unarmed security guard. He alleged ongoing workplace harassment and racial discrimination, saying co-workers spoke Creole around him, denied him restroom and meal breaks, and failed to relieve him from his post.

Investigators wrote that Hayward had recently stopped working after a series of incidents and that his mother had sent an email to his employer outlining his complaints. The affidavit says deputies later confronted him with the flagged Discord messages, including statements about murdering co-workers and thinking about their family members “dealing with trauma.”

The affidavit also states that Hayward was placed in protective custody under the Baker Act and told investigators he did not own any firearms.
