Houston Police Department

A young woman in Texas who beat murder charges last year in the shooting death of a 20-year-old woman with disabilities is now wanted by police after allegedly breaking into a couple’s suburban Houston home, dousing them with a liquid, and setting them ablaze.
Authorities on Monday named Emma Presler, 19, as the prime suspect in the horrific Aug. 6 incident, which left 33-year-old Devin Graham dead and his wife, 26-year-old Karissa Lindros, hospitalized with burns across 70 percent of her body. The Montgomery County District Attorney’s Office on Monday filed murder charges against Presler, who remains on the run.
“She still remains at large,” Houston Police Department spokeswoman Jodi Silva told The Daily Beast. “There is a warrant for her arrest.”
Presler was identified by investigators who followed up on eyewitness accounts of a young white woman fleeing the scene in a white, four-door sedan, cops said. Lindros and Presler knew each other, Lindros’ aunt told reporters, without specifying how the two were acquainted. Police have not released any information about a possible motive for the crime. Presler does not have an attorney listed in court records, and was unable to be reached.
Last September, Presler was charged in the murder of 20-year-old Cypress, Texas, woman Sierra Rhodd as she slept. On Sept. 13, 2020, Rhodd, who suffered from cerebral palsy, was shot and killed in a flurry of bullets fired into her family’s home. Cops said the shooters took off in several vehicles, including a red pickup truck owned by Presler’s boyfriend, Austin McCalla, which Presler was found driving nearby. However, prosecutors were unable to convince a judge that Presler’s presence in the truck actually tied her personally to Rhodd’s death, and Presler was ordered released. The following month, McCalla and three others were charged with killing Rhodd. At the time, Rhodd’s father told the local Fox affiliate that he thought the shooters had in fact been targeting his teenage son, who had been feuding with a Houston-area gang known as “10K.”
Residents in the neighborhood where Presler lives with her grandparents said they weren’t particularly surprised by the new accusations.
“It never stops,” one neighbor, who asked to be identified by her middle name, Aline, for fear of retaliation, told The Daily Beast. “I just last week was saying, ‘There’s nothing going on at their house lately,’ and then...this. Shouldn't have said that.”
Aline, 31, rattled off a long list of incidents she said have occurred at the home where Presler lives, claiming to have seen indications of prostitution and drug sales.
“I hope the cops will finally start believing us,” said Aline. “We’re hoping that they get out of the neighborhood.”
Another neighbor, Tonya Woods, said she packed up and moved to another area of Houston after murder charges were dropped against Presler in the death of Sierra Rhodd.
Woods, 57, said the police were a regular presence at the home, where Presler moved after her parents landed themselves in trouble. In addition to the issues mentioned by Aline, Woods described shootings, assaults, and at least one suspicious fire having occurred there in recent years.
“It’s absolutely crazy,” Woods told The Daily Beast. “But it’s also very sad… God only knows what else is going on in that house.”
Presler has previously faced numerous other charges, including theft, drug possession, evading arrest, and failure to appear in court. She has an additional felony warrant outstanding for meth possession, on top of the murder charge in Graham’s death.
Devin Graham’s grandfather, who said he and his wife “pretty well raised” Graham themselves, is now under police protection, he said.
“The manhunt is on, and it’s very close to home,” Norman Graham told The Daily Beast, adding that investigators told him “not to say anything.”
Graham, 72, said he’s trying not to read the news, because he said, “There’s been more than enough crap written.” He didn’t know what the relationship between his grandson and Presler might have been. But whatever it was, Graham said he still can’t fathom why she would’ve wanted to hurt him.
“I don't understand any of it, how anybody could be that way,” Graham said. “I don’t know how the devil can reach up and win on things like that, but he did. And I don't know how anybody can think that this kind of behavior from anyone is correct. I’ll tell you, I would hate to be at the throne of god in the position that they are.”

Beverly Hills: 99% of people arrested by ‘safe streets’ unit were Black, suit says
Nearly all the people arrested by a Beverly Hills police taskforce over the past year were Black, according to a new lawsuit which alleges egregious racial profiling in the wealthy California city.

The complaint, filed Tuesday by the prominent civil rights lawyer Benjamin Crump, alleges that out of 106 people arrested by a Beverly Hills police “safe streets” taskforce, 105 were Black and one was a dark-skinned Latino person. Between March 2020 and July 2021, the unit unjustly stopped and arrested Black civilians who were roller skating, scootering, driving and jaywalking a few feet outside the crosswalk, the suit said.

The unit, also known as the Rodeo Drive taskforce, was set up last year in response to “a significant increase in calls for service in our business community”, according to the city, which is one of the richest municipalities in the US and less than 2% Black.
The plaintiffs in the suit, which was filed as a class action, are Jasmine Williams and Khalil White, a couple on vacation in Beverly Hills last September. They had been riding a scooter when police detained them “without any reasonable suspicion or probable cause”, lawyers wrote, saying officers demanded their IDs to run their names through a criminal database even though they hadn’t committed a crime.

The couple “peacefully” objected to the officers “abusing their police powers” and were subsequently handcuffed and arrested on “multiple fabricated charges”, the complaint said, adding that prosecutors later dropped the charges.
The suit also cited a 2 October 2020 incident when the unit stopped Salehe Bembury, who was then vice-president of men’s footwear at Versace and was holding a Versace shopping bag.

Body camera footage from that incident shows officers followed him and stopped him for jaywalking, with one saying, “How come you did that? You didn’t want to wait for the light?” The officers immediately asked for his ID, asked if he had weapons on him and then proceeded to pat him down and search him.
“What’s unfortunate is I literally designed the shoes that are in this bag, and I’m being … searched,” Bembury said to the officers, after repeatedly making clear that he was complying and that the officers were making him nervous. When he got his phone out to record, one officer tried to discourage him from filming, saying, “Right now, you’re being detained.” The officers later released him. Bembury posted footage of the interaction on Instagram.

A California high school teacher who told her class to pledge allegiance to the gay pride flag instead of the American flag has been put on administrative leave.
Kristin Pitzen, of Newport Mesa School District in Orange County, posted a video explaining the incident on TikTok, and has now been removed from the classroom as the school investigates.
In the video, she admitted she'd removed the American flag because it made her 'uncomfortable', and told her class to say the Pledge of Allegiance to the gay pride flag.
When one of her English class students pointed out the American flag was missing during the pledge, she told them to recite it to the rainbow one instead.
'She has been removed from the classroom and placed on administrative leave, as our investigation continues,' said spokesperson Annette Franco according to Fox News.
Over the weekend, the Newport Mesa School District opened an investigation into the incident.
'We are aware of this incident and are investigating. While we do not discuss employee related matters, we can tell you that showing respect and honor for our nation’s flag is a value that we instill in our students and an expectation of our employees,' Franco said.

She showed off how she is celebrating Pride Month - by hanging a variety of pride flags in her classroom
'We take matters like this seriously and will be taking action to address it.'
The TikTok video posted by the teacher has since gone viral, sparking a backlash from many parents who were angry she was teaching children to 'disrespect' the American flag.
'How can the words "for liberty and justice for all" bring such hate in people? How can anyone have (an) issue with those words?' one user replied.
Some even questioned why she lives in America, calling on the school to fire her and parents to homeschool their kids.
While others praised her, even going as far to say they wished she taught their own children.
She said she always tells her class: 'Stand if you feel like it, don't stand if you feel like it. Say the words if you want, don't have to say the words.'
'So my class decided to stand but not say the words - totally fine,' she said.

In the controversial TikTok, Pitzen reveals that the Pledge of Allegiance is read during third-period announcements.
'Except for the fact that my room does not have a flag,' Pitzen added.
'It used to be there,' she said in the video as she pivots the camera and points to the wall in the front of the classroom.
'But I took it down during Covid,' she said, whispering that she did it 'because it made me uncomfortable'.
She said she 'packed it away' but doesn't know where, laughing in a way that implied otherwise, prompting the school district to open an investigation.

'And I haven't found it yet,' Pitzen added, as she put her hand over her mouth to stifle a laugh.
When a student asks her where the flag is, saying it's 'kinda weird that we stand and then we say it (the Pledge of Allegiance) to nothing,' the teacher shrugged it off and told them: 'I'm working on it, I got you.'
The TikTok then cuts to Pitzen then silently mouthing 'no' while shaking her head.
In the meantime, she told the student: 'We do have a flag in the class that you can pledge your allegiance to.'

'And he goes: 'Oh, that one'?' she added as she shows the gay pride flag hung in the classroom.
The original TikTok has since been taken down - along with all of Pitzen's social media accounts - but has been viewed on Twitter more than 1.2million times.
An earlier video she posted on her account, where she goes by @MrsGillingsworth, the teacher celebrated Pride Month on June 1 and showed off how she is celebrating by hanging a variety of pride flags in her classroom.
'I pledge allegiance to the queers,' she said in the video while wearing rainbow glasses, earrings and suspenders.

Not everyone disagreed with Pitzen, some praised her decision while others said they would have felt more comfortable pledging to the gay pride flag rather than the US one
Pitzen also showed the large pride flag she got at Target and planned to hang on the wall - the same one she later told one of her students they could say the Pledge to in place of the American Flag.
'I love you all very much. For the people who are out, for the people who aren't out - you're appreciate, you're loved, you are enough. I support you,' she said at the end of the video.
The video was disgust by many online who blasted her for being 'disrespectful to our American Flag.'
Others demanded she be fired and threatened to contact her school.
'She needs to be reported immediately to the school board ASAP!! Thank god I don't have kids in school anymore.'
Many more accused her of 'indoctrinating' their children.
Not everyone disagreed with Pitzen, some praised her decision while others said they would have felt more comfortable pledging to the gay pride flag rather than the US one. 'Reciting a pledge to any flag is cringe,' one user commented.

A man severed his penis and threw it out of his car window then claimed voices on the radio told him it would save the world.
Tyson Gilbert, 39, from Cookeville, Putnam County TN, led police officers on a wild car chase through two counties in Tennessee as he hared towards the Interstate on Wednesday morning.
A Tennessee highway patrolman was the first to see Gilbert had mutilated himself after seeing the man, who was driving naked, covered in blood.
He was eventually stopped by members of the Alexandria Police Department who managed to box in his car on the highway just before he reached the Interstate.
He was taken into custody and transferred to Vanderbilt University Medical Center, though it is not known if his appendage was retrieved for reattachment.

Tyson Gilbert, 39, reportedly severed his penis because voices on the radio told him it would save the world. He was arrested after a police chase in Tennessee on Wednesday
Gilbert, who was charged in 2020 with four counts of attempted car theft and resisting arrest by the Nashville Airport Police, was first approached by highway patrolman Bobby Johnson as his Honda Accord was partially parked in the road on the highway in Dowelltown.
When Trooper Johnson approached the car, Gilbert took off down the highway.
'When I pulled up behind him and turned my lights on he took off and refused to stop,' said Johnson.
'He turned off on Old Liberty Road and came to a stop. He opened his door. He was naked and covered in blood. He then shut his door and kept driving.'
Cars from the Alexandria Police Department began to gave chase, but Gibert led them from Dowelltown into Wilson county, and then into Watertown.

The police managed to lay down spikes on the road which burst Gilbert's tires, but he kept control of the vehicle into Watertown and was heading for the Interstate.
Fortunately, the damage caused by the road spikes severely hampered Gilbert's car and forced him to slow down as he was driving on flat tires.
'The first spike strips got one of his front tires and the second got the other tire. After that it became a slow speed pursuit with him running on his rims until we boxed him in,' Trooper Johnson told local radio station WLJE.
Gilbert was stopped and arrested just before he managed to reach the Interstate, but by that time members from six different law enforcement departments - Cookeville and Nashville highway patrol, the DeKalb County and Wilson Country Sheriff's Department and the Alexandria and Watertown Police Department - had all been involved in the car chase.

Gilbert was arrested just before he reached the Interstate, but was promptly transferred to Vanderbilt University Medical Center.
Facebook users who commented on Gilbert's predicament painted a picture of a tormented and aggressive man.
'I worked with this man and he is not a good person,' said one user.
'He almost hit me with his truck on the job site.'
Another user described his predicament as 'tragic' having found out that Gilbert had previously been arrested and charged with several offences in Cookeville. He was previously incarcerated in Putnam Country Jail in 2017.
In 2020, Gilbert was arrested for trying to steal four different rental cars from EAN Rental Company in Cookeville. Shawn Nixon, the rental manager, told officers that Gilbert attempted to drive out of the garage in a 2020 Audi Q3, a 2020 Audi A5, a 2019 Chevy Malibu, and a 2020 Nissan Rogue.
Gilbert was arrested and charged with three counts of attempted theft of property, attempted theft of services, and resisting arrest, and was jailed on a $61,000 bond. It is not clear when he was released from custody.
The investigation into Wednesday's incident is still ongoing.

A Las Vegas man was tortured for hours with a blowtorch, ax and other implements before he was forced to strip and walk off a cliff — and then shot to death, records show.
The body of Roy Jaggers, 27, was discovered Aug. 1 in Nye County’s Cathedral Canyon, where his neighbor, Heather Pate, her boyfriend, Kevin Dent, and Pate’s former flame, Brad Mehn, allegedly tortured the man with knives, a baton and an ax, according to a criminal complaint obtained by the Las Vegas Review-Journal.
Mehn, 37, allegedly then shot Jaggers after he was forced to strip off his clothes and walk off the cliff.
Sheriff’s officials said in a video statement early last month that Pate, 27, and Dent, 36, had lured him to her home because they believed he hurt the woman’s child.
“When he arrived, they confronted Jaggers and subsequently beat him,” Nye County Sheriff’s Capt. David Boruchowitz said. “Upon arriving in Nye County, they met Mehn who led them to an area in the desert where they tortured Jaggers over multiple hours using numerous different weapons.”

The trio then drove Jaggers 25 miles away to Cathedral Canyon, where they made him walk off the cliff’s edge. In the gorge below, he was then shot multiple times, according to the complaint.
An autopsy found Jaggers died from multiple gunshot wounds, Boruchowitz said.
Prosecutors are considering the death penalty for Mehn, who allegedly fired the shots that killed Jaggers, the Review-Journal reported Friday.
Jaggers’ mother, Kassy Robinson, said her son occasionally babysat Pate’s children or watched her dogs. She declined to discuss details of her son’s gruesome slaying, but insisted he was a non-violent, kind man.
“I know exactly what he was like, what he’s capable of, what he’s not capable of,” Robinson told the newspaper.

Jaggers’ father, Jerry, said he had a tough time processing the details of his son’s killing.
“How can you do that to another human being?” Jaggers said in a recent interview.
Jaggers’ parents said they plan to attend every court hearing in the case to ensure “that justice is served” in their son’s slaying.
“It’s going to be the hardest thing I’ve ever done in my life,” Jerry Jaggers told the newspaper.
An online fundraiser set up by Robinson for her son — who loved anime and martial arts — had garnered more than $5,600 as of Wednesday.
“Roy was so loving and friendly to everyone he met and the world is now short 1 amazing angel,” the website reads.
Pate, Dent and Mehn remain held without bail at the Nye County Detention Center on charges including murder and kidnapping. A preliminary hearing is set for Thursday, the Review-Journal reported.
