Oscar Nominations 2026

Out of respect for members, if they quote me I respond. No matter if it's to say fuck me or if we're having a conversation.

And like I told you earlier, I knew the numbers and that should've been the end of the conversation.

But you couldn't let it go and kept

Telling me what I didn't know, telling me about my logic, saying according to me and making wrong interpretations of what I said.

Again you asked for it to be spelled out to you, it wasn't about me being right.

It was about you keep telling me that I was wrong, when we both knew the truth.
Knew the truth.. that Oscar historically didn’t acknowledge a lot of black films and great black performances? That this there award not ours? That it’s still fuck white people? Is that what you mean?

Why nigs wasn’t watching b4… but the new era they do smh.. fuck these cac awards

We didn't watch before because we didn't have or did have lots of representation.

We watched last night because we had representation with the hopes of them winning.

Had Sinners not been there, neither would we.

They purposely didn’t put us up there back in the days and when ratings went to shit by the 2000s they put representation of us to get back ratings aka the Halle Berry fuck film and corrupted cop Denzel.. this is facts … so basically you can’t eat at my establishment negro, but when money low and the rent due oh you can come and have a seat and eat.. well if you didn’t want me there in the first place it’s fuck you forever, I’ll eat somewhere else or better yet cook

The above was our conversation.

The bolded big lettering was what led to our ongoing discussion, and your statement was incorrect but you said it was facts.

That was our conversation. Our discussion wasn't about the history of the Oscars not acknowledging Black art. Or how the Oscars are their award show and not ours.

Was black people watching back in the days? Was many of our projects nominated back in the days? Did more black people watch when Denzel and Halle were nominated? Did our viewership help their ratings that yr?

Check this out. Everything that I said was wrong, now let's move along amicably.

After a quick search there wasn't much that I could find. But I did find the below.

Nielsen data indicates that Black viewership of the Oscars is highly volatile, largely driven by the presence of Black nominees in major categories and Black hosts
. Historically, years with high Black representation (e.g., 2005, 2007) draw significantly higher Black audiences, while years with all-white acting nominees see sharp declines in this demographic.

Key Historical Trends
  • Peak Viewership (2005): The 2005 Oscars, hosted by Chris Rock and featuring nominees like Jamie Foxx, Morgan Freeman, and Don Cheadle, drew a record 5.27 million Black viewers.
  • Correlation with Nominations: Nielsen data suggests that when "core African-American presence" is diminished, Black viewership drops significantly, often dragging down the overall viewership.
  • 2016 #OscarsSoWhite: Despite calls to boycott due to all-white acting nominees, 3.22 million Black viewers watched in 2016, a small 2% dip from 2015, partly because some viewers tuned in to see host Chris Rock address the controversy.
  • 2017 Diversity Spike: Following increased diversity in nominations, Black viewership grew, with 2017 seeing 2.9 million African American viewers, a rise driven by performances in Moonlight and Fences.
  • 2019 Bump: The 2019 Oscars, featuring nominees from Black Panther and If Beale Street Could Talk, saw black viewership rise to 2.4 million, up from 2.1 million in 2018.

Key Findings
  • Driving Audience Peaks: Five times in the 10 years leading up to 2015, the Oscars drew over 40 million total viewers, and Nielsen data showed that high Black viewership was a major factor in driving those top-tier figures.
  • 2006 Drop: Following a high in 2005, the 2006 Black audience fell by 36% (to 3.4 million) when nominees were less diverse, which represented 60% of the total decline in viewership that year.
  • Variety in Viewership: Black viewership of the Oscars has ranged from under 3 million in lower-representation years (e.g., 2012, 2016) to over 5 million in high-representation years.

Factors Affecting Ratings
  • Nominations: The popularity of movies with Black casts (e.g., Black Panther) heavily influences viewership numbers.
  • Hosts: Black hosts, such as Chris Rock or Whoopi Goldberg, have historically brought in higher viewership numbers.
  • Marketing: Networks have, at times, targeted campaigns towards Black audiences (e.g., in 2016) to ensure higher turnout

Black viewership of the Oscars, often influenced by the presence of Black nominees, historically fluctuates
between 2 and 4 million, generally representing around 9–10% of the audience. Peak viewership occurs during "diverse" years, such as 2017 ("Moonlight"), while lack of representation has led to significant audience drops in the 18-49 demographic.
NBC News +2
  • Viewership Trends: In 2019, 1.2 million Black households and 2.4 million total Black viewers watched, a jump linked to a high number of Black nominees.
  • Historical Highs/Lows: Black viewership dropped to 2.5 million during the "OscarsSoWhite" era in 2011. In 2017, viewership was high at 2.9 million, driven by Moonlight and Fences.
  • Comparison to Other Awards: While the Oscars have seen fluctuations, Black viewership of the Oscars often averages roughly 9% over a 10-year span, which is lower than the percentage of black viewers for events like the Grammys (around 16.7%).
  • Impact of Representation: Data indicates a strong correlation between Black viewership numbers and Black nominees. Years with fewer nominees often lead to a reduction in Black viewership.
