Carmen Mercedes McRae was an American jazz singer, composer, pianist, and actress. Considered one of the most influential jazz vocalists of the 20th century, it was her behind-the-beat phrasing and her ironic interpretations of song lyrics that made her memorable.

According to an article written by by David E. Weaver, Ruby Elzy was one of the first inductees into the Mississippi Musicians Hall of Fame. She possessed one of the greatest soprano voices of her generation. Ruby Elzy created the role of Serena in the American folk opera Porgy and Bess. She was also in the 1933 film Emperor Jones.

Victoria Regina Spivey, sometimes was known as Queen Victoria, was an American blues singer and songwriter. During a recording career that spanned 40 years, from 1926 to the mid-1960s, she worked with Louis Armstrong, King Oliver, Clarence Williams, Luis Russell, Lonnie Johnson, and Bob Dylan.
