C'mon bruh. The whole world capitalizes off of alcohol but as soon as Spike does it there's a problem
more easier to produce ur own content and release it to the masses now than ever b4.. u could literally do a 60 min standup comedy using a selfie stick and ur cellphone in ur crib..make some bs website and literally have people pay to see the stream..you can make a free trailer using youtube and send a mass email of the link for the trailer..u can promote the shit out of it on facebook, twitter, instragram, etc for absolutely free, even send a mass text to all the people on ur phone and tell them to pass the info on..it's no excuses anymore..if u don't push something out there it's ur fault.. the adult industry is the perfect example of that now..u don't need big companies anymore..any random chick who can suck a mean dick can literally sell their own clips without needing the industry to cosign her..this is the century for the independant producer..once the tech game improved and became cheaper the big markets got scared..the only thing saving them rite now is the naiveness of many not knowing what they are capable of doin by themselvesthat is it... the difference is less independent outlets exist now vs the 80s and 90s
there are less studios
less media companies
less independent production house

I'm not going to say there hasn't been shifts in the industry and those shifts have major effects on black filmmakers but at the same time we've seen a sort of resurgence of black cinema between tyler perry, lee daniels, ice cube, producer will packer and a few others...is like the black film renaissance of the 90s?? not exactly to the same scale but its there. And thru out that spike has still produced films. Its just that with the exception of one or two in the last 10 years most of them have not connected as stories with the larger community.that is it... the difference is less independent outlets exist now vs the 80s and 90s

What's your definition of hit or miss? Based on box office? His films have never been big box office hits.
So the big studios own the theaters, too? Or are they just in bed with em?if you have a TV series Netflix Amazon etc is a new avenue
a feature film still has the same challenges for distribution and profitability as before...
Investors need to see a profit, even if self financed, one needs to cover costs and still mount a marketing campaign... Netflix pays per view and isn't as profitable as a theatre release and licensing on cable.
Studios have built in their profits before even making the film, they have the theatre release, PPV, closed circuit, cable and broadcast fees lined up... An indy still has to work film festivals and do door to door networking in NYC Austin Miami LA Toronto Vancouver etc... every time they have a movie, unless a house like Miramax takes them by the hand (a la Tarantino)
just like in the music industry - distribution is controlled by the same companiesSo the big studios own the theaters, too? Or are they just in bed with em?
Couldn't some heavyweights like Overbrook & Tyler Perry studios get together, leverage their star power, buying power, and their industry relationships to broker a deal with like AMC or REGAL Cinemas to distribute any & everything they do?
That way they can market for cheaper to the target audience that's already in the theaters; e.g. like Master P did with putting upcoming releases on the inside of liner notes of cds. They could package their releases like that, make 3 trailers that play before every movie by Overbrook & Tyler Perry Studios, and make it so their agreement with the distributing theaters (AMC or REGAL) have to play THEIR trailers exclusively for THEIR releases.
Just a thought. What cha thank?![]()
people are creatures of habits and don't think outside the box..u can always cut the middleman out and do it urself but lot of the creatures of habits only know 1 routine and pigeon hole themselves...this is all any bizzness minded person need to kno..the two most important things in bizzness is the cliental and the product..as long as u can connect the two u don't need anybody else..so if u can create it u can easily move it in various forms..stream/dvd/channel/etcSo the big studios own the theaters, too? Or are they just in bed with em?

Spike lee started making short films in 1979. He is the most prolific impactful productive black American director of all time. Without question he is a cultural icon who defined an entire generation culturally. No other films spoke to the times of the late 80's and early 90's as spike lee's. For black people he is THE DIRECTOR. To narrow his career down to the last 3rd is silly and stupid. It's like judging Jordan off his legacy as a Washington Bullet or Roy Jones off his last 10 fights. Spike Lee when it comes to filmmaking is clearly THE GREATEST AFRICAN AMERICAN FILMMAKER OF ALL TIME. To suggest otherwise is foolish.
You all can continue on with this bullshit post that attempts to diminish the legacy of a man that culturally has given more back to the black community than ANY artist in the last 50 years.

hey man real 80's baby grew up fast..especially if u had cable..hbo/showtime..throw in an older bro and forget about it..me and my older bro still joke about how he took me to see full metal jacket at the movies when i was like 6 or 7..he laughs till this day how i was dying at the vietnamese chick saying me so horny and how i was laughing my ass off that when i was young..he was like yeah my lil bro is kinda advance cause he's laughing cause he actually understands what she mean..like i said b4 i seen robocop in the movies and we all kno that was raw as hell..night of the living dead, the thing, aliens, etc i grew up watching and loving all that shit..my bro use to joke around and be like we're raising a future serial killer cause something is very odd when a 5/6yr old is begging to watch jason part 6 on tv at midnite and he's literally in the room laughing his ass off and cheering during killing scenes..like i said horror flicks was prob top 2 maybe 3 fave genres growing up
man i still remember when showtime world premier jason part 6 on cable..they showed part 5 first than rite after like at midnite part 6 came on..i begged my bro could i stay up and watch that shit in his room..man i remember watching the opening scene
when that nig got hit by lighting and raised up and ripped dude heart out i was like omg this is the greatest shit ever and was mad hyped
than at the end of the movie when they played this track
u couldn't tell me shit..i damn near knew that song word for word at some point in my life
I heard some talk that was not really Rosie Perez's titties. There was no head in those pictures, so it's possible. Anybody know the truth?

Miss as in nobody liked the damn movies fam
nio but theyve always been well received by a black audience...so going by US as opposed to the mainstream spike's films has always been the gold standard..except lately.
she hate me was all over the place? was it a whistle blower story? about gay marriage and the rights of gay parents?? single women wanting children? Then I disagree with that then. I fucks with all them movies. I get why people didn't like Chi-raq and that shit was trash.
We don't like shit no more though lol. Like I get why people didn't like Chiraq or Sweet Blood of Jesus or Red Hook Summer. Wierd ass movies. But them other films weren't bad movies. I remember they hated She Hate Me. I thought that was a great film.

its okay to tackle different topics but people were looking for a connecting point for them...what did the whistleblower/enron stuff have to do with the surrogate father stuff with the lesbian parent stuff with the rekindled flame/brokenheart stuff? Without some kind of thing that brings them together its comes off as some random shit thrown together. An the breaking the traditional filmmaking format just comes off as pretentious.See this my point. We've been programmed to follow a certain blueprint on how to make a film. Spike went off of that blueprint and people said it was all over the place or it was trash. He tackled a bunch of different topics through one character in Mackie's character. It wasn't a traditional film but I can't call it bad because it didn't follow the traditional filmmaking format.
Then I disagree with that then. I fucks with all them movies. I get why people didn't like Chi-raq and that shit was trash.
.
I get that
You disagree cuz you like it but you have to agree that those movies weren't as well recieved overall as his joints in the 80s and 90s
That's my point
Well shit I'd probably agree with that. I don't know what that is to be honest. Well I do somewhat get it. The subject matter is different. But I feel its more of Spike than it his work. Like no body can tell me Tyler Perry shit is better than Spikes but for whatever reason his movies are better received by us than Spike. People just grew tired of spike for whatever reason.

Francis Ford Coppola talks about filmmakers walking that fine line and how its percieved.
At its heart narrative filmmaking is storytelling right..and a narrative has to have a beginning a middle and an end in order for it to make sense to the audience. If I told you a story and said once upon a time there was a little boy who plays with a balloon in his backyard then a bird swoops down and steals the balloon and he goes inside and later goes to sleep and space aliens visit his room and take him on a ride across the galaxy where he sees incredible landscapes and cities on some distance planet then he goes to a bedroom there and wakes up home where his parents takes him to the zoo and he sees lions in a cage and gets sad for them then later he's in his bedroom drawing pictures of balloons. THE END...you would listen to that and think WHAT THE FLYING FUCK WAS THAT?It was some random shit thrown together but how is that bad? Is Film not a form of art? Like I never just never got that. Like if we don't follow a certain film formula than its shit. Its the only form of art where we try to tell people how it SHOULD'VE been.
Perhaps the greatest set of all natural breasts put on film ever
