Oil Rig Work Apparently Pays MAJOR Bread...

I'm happy working half a year. Benefits and good pay is what makes me happy.

Work my ass off the first 6 months and travel the world the other 6 ? That sounds like the fucking life. I'm so serious about doing this it's not even funny. I'm searching for internships as we speak. People like to clown but you dropped a lot of gems in this thread.

I've been trying to get into being an Operator since last summer. Passed the Exxon operator exam and it's been over a year with no call back yet. Passed Lyondell test for Operator as well. They called for an interview but didn't get in on that either.

All these oil jobs in Houston seem to be about who you know. My so called "friends" had tried to look out as far as getting me in, but nothing so far.

Exxon is supposed to be the toughest aptitude type test. Like 1200 people test and they hire only 30.

I've applied to tons of companies for operator jobs, none has ever hit me back for an interview or nothing yet.

I've been recently studying to get my PMP cause I have IT experience that qualifies me to take the exam, other than that, if lotto aint knocking on my door, then I gotta stick to my freelancing hustle, sucks in these times.

Bro yes at some companies it is who you know...I've taken and PASSED every test...Operator's test and Maintenance Technician's test which is wayyyyy harder than the Operators test...Shell Chevron lyondell and so on...I took a test where 20 positions where available and 2500 showed up to take the test...like I said in another post a guy at BP in Ohio told me it took him 12yrs to get his job as an operator and he is making over 125k a year now

My man Chris just got an Operators job at Dow...my boy Calvin got on at BP in Texas City...cats making 3g's or better a week!!! My kinfolk got on at Shell Motiva a couple years ago and caking...but his baby mama daddy is a big wig out there and got him on...see what im saying...u just gotta keep plugging...

get a contract job or something just to get in the refinery/plant to have the experience...some just want u to have 2-5yrs worth of experience of being in a plant period..

I got my first taste of it thru a staffing company...paid me $10hr to dump 50lb bags of bad product into a rework tank...when I tell u it was shitty it was shitty!!! I did that for a week then they put me in training for maintenance and I shot up in pay and hours. But when I went in that control room and saw how the operators had it man I knew what I wanted to do...mufuckas in there cooking spreads with steaks and shit...sleeping...it was all love

In life sometimes you have to step back to move forward. I have a bachelors degree as well went back and got my associates and doubled my income ASAP. If his bachelors degree was so great he wouldn't even be thinking about making a change.

He has to start all over again...got into a fight with his wife and went to jail for DV...court threw it out but he was in the medical field they fired him and since then no one will hire him even with it dismissed.

If you doubled your salary just by doing that then his ass has no choice but to try to do the same. It would be good for him to find a school away from Dallas in a small town were the hoes are very limited and ugly.

@kingleo, I know that too well. My son does mostly labor work. Has tons of experience, but does mostly catalyst work. Does contract work, but never hired permanent.

Me I come from a IT background making 6 figures, not saying I won't suck salt to make less, b ut freelance doing graphics, photography and antique restorations. I get by and then some, just that it's not steady, make 10k one month, next month may be none. Before the recession, was nothing like this.

Now 4yrs of this, I'm just adjusted to this economy, no optimism that it will change, so resorting to getting into the process industry.

That's good you've passed the test. Go enroll in some process classes. You aren't doing anything to make yourself look different from the next guy who passed. Take classes at night. I never took Lyondell I heard it was kind of hard. Don't they have you do some console stuff on the test? I'm about to go get my mops and get to work.

No the operator exam for Lyondell was an old type test I was told. Same type of aptitude as Exxon, but really simple. Both Lyondell and Exxon were about 5hrs long.

I know I would look like any new jack coming out of high school to them, that's why I gotta say screw it and just do the project management thing. Make a ton more money as a PMP and indoors all day at a desk job. Well at least 95% of the time.

You have a Process Technology degree or they let you take the test without one?

No degree. Many of my neighbors (CAC's) all have no degrees what so ever. Working at various places for many years, all cause of who they've known.

Many operator positions never needed a degree. I got one neighbor got a job last year at Behr as an operator. He told me they were hiring recently, I went on the site, applied even though now they are requiring degrees now. They weeding people out.

But if you know someone, they don't care for that.

A lot of these plants want to train you not how the school taught you. Exxon is one of them. They want to train you the way they process and will tell you throw all that school shit out as you walk in the door.

I talk like I have tons of experience, but I have none, just all my neighbors and friends all work in the plants. So I hear these stories all the time.

The process of hiring basically goes like this:
> Family (son, cousin, nephew, whatever)
> Degree
> No experience

Because of the recession, the no experience falls to the way side or if you have the right color... Believe what you want, but in the south, color makes a major diff in what kind of job you will get or just be a statistic cause they need to hire a certain amount of us for the fiscal year. Racism is thick out in these parts. Just ain't in ya face, but oh it's there.

No interest whatsoever in oil rig work but this is a nice thread.

Props to all contributors.

since its all about hookups, can any of yall hook a brother up?

anyone from the CA area? if not im still down...

how hard was the test? I'm looking for a practice one or sample one now so I can see what I'm up against.

how hard was the test? I'm looking for a practice one or sample one now so I can see what I'm up against.

Exxon was the hardest, especially because I am not in the oil industry. It's generally a 5 part aptitude test, lasts about 4-5 hrs.

Hardest part is reading about something you know nothing about, like types of gases and their effects, then answering questions after that are tricky common sense responses to them. Then there are other trick questions about like timesheets and how to schedule employees. They may seem easy telling you, but at the end of that whole testing, my head hurt so hard, I went to sleep when I got home.

Seriously thought I failed. I know many friends who told me they took it 2-3 times cause they kept failing.

All other operator tests I took were a cake walk compared to Exxon. Exxon's tests will seriously test your brain capacity. Anyone who tells you that it doesn't has either gotta be a rocket scientist or completely full of it.

Look online for practice aptitude tests. There are parts on the tests about managing, another test about mechanical images, another about reading comprehension and the last test is about your own decisions in life. Shit like would you tell on another employee if they were stealing, things like that.

When you go to Exxon's site, they have a bullshit practice test that will NOT prepare you for the exam. Not trying to scare you, but it is a rough test.

Hey Guy's,
There are numerous opportunities in ROV's out there. All ROV companies are currently hurting for good people. Pay is negotiable! If you're good at Video Games, you can do this. Also check out C-Innovations, DOFF and Canyon.

This makes a lot of sense and I hear similar stories from brothers trying to get in diff career fields. What I have seen is this, The railroad does the same thing, they weed out the brothers who are qualified and hire CAC's who didnt even finish high school. Again my cousin has went and applied for manual labor jobs and was told he was over qualified or since he was arrested for DV they have a strict policy about it but in turn they will hire a mf CAC who is on meth and didnt even finish the 9th grade just because thats Jerry Don's girlfriends brother.

I would suggest to any of you cats interested to pursue an A.A.S degree in Process Technology

for those that dont know it's to be an operator...oil refineries are EVERYWHERE and operators are always needed with guys aging and retiring...I work for a chemical comany here in Houston and we do De-con work at different refineries worldwide...I was at the BP refinery in Toledo Ohio last month and I swear man I went to the Crude vac unit to sign into a log book and saw this brother sitting behind a desk looking at a movie on a laptop...dude just passed out permits and was getting $34hr working 12hr shifts and worked 16 days in a row...sunday is double time and if u work a holiday TRIPLE TIME...another brother told me if you working there and u make 100k u bullshitting

offshore work is cool but operators have it made...and it's not just oil refineries its chemical plants too...most of the time those cats be in the control room sleeping

Sounds like my job :lol::lol:

so lemme ask this...

if all these 75k - 150k jobs are out here what is stopping cats from filling them? this is the roughest economy ever. is the work too hard? do brothas just not know? do we get discriminated against in the hiring process?

whats goin on? props to all for sharing.

Well you can do labor work which pays like 10-15 an hour and work 16 hrs a day for 7 days a week.
That entails working with no time to do anything when you come home, eat sleep and go back to work for a time period which is usually temp for 3-6 mths with no benefits.

A lot of the other better jobs used to be easier to get into prior to the recession. Now these employers are making it harder for any and anybody to get hired and blame it on Obama for putting so many restrictions on the production of oil.

The reason a lot of us don't have these jobs is we just don't know about them. When I was raised I was told go to college the 4 year institution to get your degree. Yes that is a great thing to teach a child. Both my parents are college educated so you best believe you heading to state college after high school. I knew what an Operator was growing up but It wasn't something I looked forward to. Usually these jobs are known by people who live in industrial type areas. Notice most of these jobs are in Gulf Coast regions and the cities around them. A lot of guys aren't going to like this kind of work. I mean as they say it never rains in a plant. Meaning when its raining your ass out there working. Some cats ain't gonna like that shit. Hell I was out in the rain last night at 3 in the fucking morning doing some shit. Did I like it ? Hell no but them niggas was paying me good money to be out here so I did my shit like a champ. In all hiring places you're gonna have some discrimination but I wouldn't let that faze you. Get your education in Process Tech and just apply apply apply at ever job that opens up. You will get your chance. Also take a job anywhere just to get your some damn experience. Experience is the best thing you can gain. The money gonna come eventually.

So you kind of took this route right? But at the same time you completed your process tech degree and worked for an oil company....correct

Seems like everyone thinks they are going to get hired and ball outta control and shit. I didnt think it was that easy to get to the level you guys are at that easy. I talked to a old teammate and he is in the industry..told me he made 190k in 1 year offshore...no exp at all but he does have a degree in finance...once he came back they put him in the front office. He did say if he was married he would have been divorced...

No. I have a history in IT as a systems admin. I also do graphic design as a freelancer and that's been supporting me for the past 17+ years, bought me 2 houses.

Been trying to get into the oil industry since moving to Texas from NYC from the past 4-5 yrs, just started applying to these type jobs a year ago, since no where in Houston has given me any offers for IT. Never planned to go back to a 9-5 but recession changed that, and never thought I'd apply to a manual type job, but I saw the money that could be made and decided to look at it.

My neighbor worked 4 months last year and made 60k at the start of the year.

Exact same thing happened to me. Went back to college for a 3rd time to earn a third degree. The third degree was in Process Technology. Best decision I ever made. Sometimes I wish I would've went into Process Technology right out of high school. For me it was a career change to the Medical field or a Process Tech related field. I chose Process Tech and extremely glad I did. With my wife already having a lucrative career in the Medical field and the career I've been able to attain in Process Technology field has allowed us to improve our quality of life dramatically.
