***** OFFICIAL UFC 129 - Sat. April 30th - GSP / Shields / Aldo / Hominick - 55,000!

Helico-pterFunk

Rising Star
BGOL Legend

Enjoy the big card on Saturday, April 30th everyone. Gonna be some solid match-ups and should be interesting to see how it all unfolds. GSP / SHIELDS / ALDO / HOMINICK / MACHIDA / COUTURE / DIAZ / MACDONALD / HENDERSON / BOCEK and more. Some good talent up in that piece. Keep in mind that there's plenty of coverage on the news sites and blogs at present ... tv coverage from the various stations ... the recently-wrapped UFC Primetime 3-episode special and UFC 129 Countdown, and programming on Versus, Spike, Rogers Sportsnet and The Score, as well as MMA Live on ESPN, etc. Also remember the earlier start to the event ... 1 hour jump ... and make sure to log in at the UFC FACEBOOK page to see 5 of the prelim fights aired, the Spike prelims which will air a guaranteed 2 (and usually they're able to get 3, sometimes 4 in) and of course the main card of a guaranteed 5 and whatever else they can fit in with the previously-contested prelims earlier in the night.

Big ups to all the athletes ... and have fun to everyone who's going and/or attending the UFC Expo in Toronto, etc.

April 29th update:

I'm gonna check out the weigh-ins in a bit. I recorded them this afternoon. They aired on THE SCORE on the westcoast, and on Rogers Sportsnet's regional feeds in 2 - 3 of the other parts of Canada per their programming. Also recorded a 1-hour special on MMA Connected that I'ma check out. All caught up on TUF 13 and the UFC Primetime specials ... looking forward to the event tomorrow. Gonna be cool seeing how the event plays out. Largest North American event to-date, and second only to the huge crowds they drew for Pride in Japan in years past. The cameras / lights / screens / crowd noise should be something else to take in!

Re: ***** OFFICIAL UFC 129 - Sat. April 30th - GSP / Shields / Aldo / Hominick - 55,0

I got my man, GSP, beating Jake Shields. Randy Couture will be lucky if he comes out of the fight against Machida with a unanimous decision loss. Also, that Canadian may lose to Aldo. This Aldo hype appears legitimate but he needs some more challenges than the ones he's had in the WEC. I am not so impressed cause the next fighter can beat him. The right one. Everybody hyped Machida up until he got his ass whipped. That's why I never hype anybody up.

Re: ***** OFFICIAL UFC 129 - Sat. April 30th - GSP / Shields / Aldo / Hominick - 55,0

Mega',

Should be interesting to see how well Couture and Hominick fare in their match-ups, for sure.

Aldo is the real deal. He's currently ranked Top 3 in the world (any division) and widely considered one of the P4P best alongside Silva and GSP. Watch how he measures Hominick (as with any opponent). He usually finds his range in the 1st round and then goes off afterward. I wanna see how well Hominick does with his striking, and what type of leg kicks he's gonna receive (as Aldo has some of the best in the game and a SOCCER background to boot)

They said the same about machida until he got his ass KO'd. Also fought Faber to a unanimous decision win. Now take him up to a better challenge than Faber. Put him in their with somebody like Jon Fitch or Melvin Guilliard and see how tough Aldo is. My thing is that I never hype people until they deserve it. When I say they deserve it, I mean they have to fight REAL competition. GSP and Anderson Silva has beaten great fighters so they deserve to ranked the best in the world.

Dream matches I would like to see are GSP vs A.Silva or Jon Jones Vs. Siva. I do think Jones would have a chance against Silva.

Re: ***** OFFICIAL UFC 129 - Sat. April 30th - GSP / Shields / Aldo / Hominick - 55,0

Shields vs GSP - Shields by submission.I train with Jake and he is a beast.GSP is far more well rounded, but Jake has a huge advantage on the ground and he will take GSP down and submit him.Jake is READY for this one.

Aldo vs Hominick- Aldo

Masushenko vs Brilz- Brilz Vladdy is way past his prime.

Couture vs Machida- Machida by stoppage. Its hard to bet against Couture because he finds ways to win,but Machida's striking is too good and he is evasive enough to avoid the tieups that Randy needs IMO.I see this as Couture's retirement fight.

Bocek vs Henderson- Bocek This can go either way,but I think Bocek will get the choke.

Diaz vs Macdonald- Nate by submission

Peirson vs Ellinberger- Ellinberger

Roberts vs Patrick- Roberts by submission

Valencia vs Menjavier- Valencia by decision Valencia has been a beast for over a decade but just now getting the recognition he deserves.

Macdonald vs Jensen- Macdonald by submission Jensen is a better wrestler but Macdonald is a better fighter.

I dont know anything about the rest of the card.

ALDO = 145lbs.

FITCH = 170lbs.

FABER = 145 formerly, and now 135lbs. ALDO toyed with him too in his hometown ... took it to him for the duration and had his number the entire time. No worry on his part.

GUILLARD = back on track now. Props on getting his life and career in order. He's a force at 155lbs.

MACHIDA = 205lbs. Great battle in his first fight with Rua. Shogun had his number in the rematch, and many say he won over Rampage when they battled in October 2010. He's got something to prove now coming off a narrow victory and 2 losses after countless years of wins.

Re: ***** OFFICIAL UFC 129 - Sat. April 30th - GSP / Shields / Aldo / Hominick - 55,0

Good picks, Spider. Word ... it's gonna be interesting to see what transpires with GSP and Shields.

Aldo is a beast. I wish my Canadian brothers (all 10 or so of them on the card) well ... but Hominick's never faced anyone as dynamic as Jose.

I'm pulling for Rory MacDonald. I was really impressed with him at UFC 115 in Vancouver in June 2010. Great battle with Carlos Condit, and he's relocated from B.C. and trains with Tri-Star's gym there in Montreal with the likes of Pierson, Jabouin, GSP, Loiseau, Makdessi, and of course Marquadt, Florian & Evans when they roll through for visits.

Roberts is a great talent ... always fun to watch, and big ups to his brother who is a BGOL fam' member here.

True - Machida's got something to prove at present, and Couture will have a tough time dealing with his dynamic nature and how quick he moves in/out and counter-attacks. Couture better hope for clinch work and dirty boxing, and EVEN THEN ...

Bocek's holding steady as a solid contender making his way up the ranks the past few years ... and props to a fellow Canadian, but I've got alot of respect for Henderson. Been watching him for years now ... he's a true talent too.

Pierson's in there tough. I was hoping his opponent would have come through, but he got injured in recent weeks. Ellinberger is a big step-up in competition. Hell - Jake was poised to face Jon Fitch earlier this year even.

Matyushenko is a veteran in the game and flies under the radar. He got taken apart by Jones in 2010, but other than that has had 4 or so wins in his past 5 - 6 fights. Brilz is a tough cat. He held his own in there against Lil' Nog and got robbed in 2010 with that judges' decision, as everyone knows. But he's noted he has other interests and is fine with 1 - 2 fights a year, and isn't as invested in the sport as others who train full-time year-round ... all the time. Should be some decent stand-up although critics are worrying that it might be a LULL in the main card action as it's the least interesting of the 5 main card fights and is the 3rd (or 2nd) fight during the PPV.

It seems you have a bias cause you train with dude. I can understand that. You want to your team to win. Being bias is not good. I am realistic. I got to call it how I see it. He may be a tough task for GSP but forget it he ain't winning.

Re: ***** OFFICIAL UFC 129 - Sat. April 30th - GSP / Shields / Aldo / Hominick - 55,0

One of the most interesting things too with GSP / SHIELDS is seeing how well they match up. We've seen Jake dominate competition in Rumble on The Rock / Elite XC / Strikeforce and elsewhere ... and he's got a 15-fight winning streak dating back 6 years, and is very technical on the ground. Whereas GSP has been putting on clinics over Penn, Fitch, Hughes, Koscheck, Hardy, and Alves. With a win it would make it his 7th title defense (Anderson Silva currently has 8 title defenses) and he hasn't lost a round dating back to 2006/2007. Only thing that concerns everyone with GSP is that despite his dominance ... he's in there for too long and risks getting injured in the process given he hasn't been able to lock in a submission, TKO (besides Penn's corner giving in after 4 rounds & getting a late verbal tap-out from Hughes), or KO win. Going 25 mins with Fitch, some 20 mins with Penn, 25 mins with Hardy, 25 mins with Alves, nearly 15 mins with Hughes, and 25 mins with a very durable Koscheck = risky overall. You should see us muthafuckin' Canadians at the sports bars and lounges. We're on pins and needles as we're confident with his dominance, but scared he'll get taken out by a looping shot from the likes of Dan, Josh, or whomever

Re: ***** OFFICIAL UFC 129 - Sat. April 30th - GSP / Shields / Aldo / Hominick - 55,0

They have done a good job of hyping this main event. However I don't believe Shields has a chance. In order for Shields to win he must get it to the ground. Unfortunately for Shields GSP take down defense is top notch. You have to ask is Shields shot better than Josh Koscheck's ? No way.

Unless GSP decides to take Shields down, then Shields better tap him quick, because if he puts GSP in danger but doesnt tap him, then Gsp will likely decide to keep it standing and box the hell out him.

Machida will kill Randy.

and of course I'm riding with Aldo.

Yeah I don't see Shields being much of a threat.

Dan Henderson has better takedown defense than GSP.Jake still took him down repeatedly.Koschek has great takedowns but after failing 2 he quit going for them and settled for getting beat up on the feet.Jake wont make that mistake.

GSP's main strength for the longest has been his takedown defense. Henderson has rarely fought anyone known for take downs/wrestling & shown good tdd. GSP has...Kos, Fitch, Penn, Hughes and none of them have recently been able to wrestle him to the ground.

Your basing this on what? What other top level wrestler has Hendo fought to test his takedown defense.

Koschek has great takedowns but after failing 2 he quit going for them and settled for getting beat up on the feet.Jake wont make that mistake.

Because he felt like he other options, and probably felt with his striking ability that would give him an even better chance to set up a shot because GSP has more to worry about more than one thing, but he suffered to much punishment in the process.

With Shields all GSP has to worry about is his ground game, so it will be even harder for him to set up his takedown because he wont really to even be able to set it up with Strikes.

Props, bro. How many additional tickets did they release? I heard about this from John Morgan @ MMA Junkie yesterday. Nice! One of my brother's friends (from B.C.) is in Toronto this weekend with one of his homies. They paid an arm and a leg for their tickets back in Feb' or so :D

Yes - he's a cool cat. He's posted and mentioned Daniel on a handful of occasions on BGOL, and gave the fam' a heads-up to keep an eye out for his brother (prior to his past few wins) back on the board in 2009 or early-2010. Good cat ... I'll see if I can locate the username for you ^

I don't know the rules for blatant self promotion or promotion of a relative but I just started managing my little brother and posted this vid today. Let me know what you think.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HkpxHyQVqTE

please assist with embedding.

He trains boxing and Mui Thai, but of course his background is wrestling. He is nice with his strikes but the lack of standup is more a product of my editing and the fact that he's only had a handful of fights so far most of which he won on the ground in under a minute.

Yeah I'm glad I tested it here, now I see I should show more of his standup. He is 5'10" and fights at 170lbs. His record is 4-0, fights in the EFL in the south/southwest mainly. Like I said, he is just getting started but I'm proud of him so far. I'm thinkin' back and I can only remember maybe 3 fights I've had in the last 15 years and they mainly consisted of trading a couple of blows. My bro is getting in the ring with someone who is trained and paid to kick his ass and he is undefeated so far.

Thanks for the comments and critiques. I will keep the board up to date on his status. Also watch for my man on Ultimate Fighter, Gerald Harris. I think he is the only brotha left so he should be easy to spot.

My brother, Daniel "Ninja" Roberts, will be fighting Canadian Claude Patrick at UFC 129 in Toronto on April 30th. He is currently 12-1 with 9 submissions finishes. His fight will probably stream live on Facebook so look out for him.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5-iXw9RTYxA

damn dudes ground game is crazy

Your brother is in for a tough fight. I'm hoping to fight at UFC in New Orleans

Good looks. He had amazing finishes in the UFC. I thought the last one would get him on the main card. This should get him on the main card if he beats Patrick. Tough fight ahead. Good Luck.

wish yo bro all the best
hopes he continues kickin ass

That Caesar Gracie Team is no joke.:D

Good luck to your bro. His arm bar submission is crazy.

nice kimura's @ 1:40 & @ 2:44

impressive subs...

Ceasar Gracie producing some really good fighters...

Dude is a beast!!!

best of luck to your bro, funny thing is me and Claude work together (trainers) at a gym. cant disclose too many details but its gonna be a war

Any chance he's going to wear the BGOL logo on his gear with the cartoon mascot from the t-shirt. i'll chip in for that...

I'm glad my brother didn't learn MMA. It was bad enough being held upside down whenever he felt like beating me down. Then one day he couldn't lift me and he wasn't brushing my punches off and dominating - we tore up half the basement but I felt I got his respect that day even though he finished me off brutally. Lol. Then made me clean up the mess... Lol. Made me tougher though.

Uppage for the fam'. That was a solid event yesterday. ALDO-HOMINICK ... damn ... easily the Fight of the Night. We were callin' that shit by Round 2/3 and it was only half way done

Dana White talked with him briefly post-fight and Randy joked that he got rattled, and his tooth fell out while he was talking to Dana :D - him, GSP, and Hominick got checked out at the hospital post-event. Dana noted at age 47 it was impressive to go 7 minutes with Machida ... in that he himself (White) is 42yo and his back was on fire from just hanging around and signing autographs with fans post-129 event

Re: ***** OFFICIAL UFC 129 - Sat. April 30th - GSP / Shields / Aldo / Hominick - 55,0

Feedback from the BGOL fam' on April 29th & 30th ---------->

True - GSP fights with technique and safety. He still got bruised up pretty quickly, but easily styled and outclassed Shields. Definitely anti-climatic after that instant classic from those warriors (ALDO/HOMINICK). GSP-SILVA isn't happening any time soon ... we'll probably see GSP-DIAZ and JONES-SILVA (perhaps at a catchweight or at 205?) before then. * Fucked up too about the 3rd round (or was it 2nd?) cut/scratch that GSP got to his cornea or lower eyelid. Fucked up his vision, as he noted, and he was blurred for the final few rounds and post-fight ... and was basically in cruise control. I just wish he would FINISH people. He's damn good, but has been coasting. Nearly 3 rounds with HUGHES / 5 rounds with FITCH / 4 rounds with PENN / 5 rounds with ALVES / 5 rounds with HARDY / 5 rounds with KOSCHECK / 5 rounds with SHIELDS.:hmm::angry::confused:

My picks
St. Pierre
although I respect jake shields, i think gsp has to many weapons and superior all round skills.

Aldo
he is far to high level of a fighter for hominick. he is gonna dominate especially since he is fully healthy now which is scary because he fought his last three fights injured.

Couture
to be honest, I can't go against the legend. he defines what it is to be a competitor. at his age he can still whoop any youngin's ass!!!

saw that gsp segment. dude is doing training in gymnastics. don't know if it'll be helpful or not in the ring, but just the fact that he's thinkin outside the box on training and improving his balance considering he's already a world champ should make any of his opponents pause. like he's always lookin for ways to improve his game.

he needs to go back to bustin windmills b-boy style in the middle of the ring when he used to win fights though

I think all that shit works for GSP...look at this cat's balance

gsp2.gif

gsp1.gif

pai46.gif

sick takedown D

I still got GSP, but I think Shields will make this fight interesting. The place where GSP is good as is on the ground, but what makes this interesting is that Shields has never been submitted in a MMA match and he is a ADCC champion with good wrestling. GSP knows damn well he can do his usual lay in the guard and he has to take risk which leaves him exposed to getting swept and Shields on top. I suspect Jake to shoot early. In the end I think GSP's conditioning will keep him out of trouble and force jake into the later rounds where GSP will turn up the heat.

ALDO by TKO rd 1

Machida by TKO, he has a chip on his shoulders, and I expect him to figure out Coutures timing and chop him to pieces.

GSP
Aldo

GSP will dominate Shields....terrible stand up and his wrestling is no where near GSP's level.....I see domination....

I'm heading to downtown Toronto right now to watch the fight (at a bar) I hear that it's rammed right now.

Fuck it. I'm going with Shields!!!!!! Although I know GSP fights to outpoint these days..somebody got to take it to his ass and stop letting him run strategy all night.

too bad it won't be Shields....

maybe Anderson

GSP & Shields just better come & fight, they got a large audience watching. Not the time to just lay-n-prey, I'm mainly watcing for Aldo & Ben Henderson. Henderson is the best wrestler I've seen as far as constantly putting on exciting fights using his wrestling as his main form of fighting.

GSP
Aldo
Machida
Brilz
Henderson

Shit looks epic.

GSP

Bocek

Henderson dropped the Kirk Franklin music since God didn't help him with his last fight

Cosign. His last four or five fights have been more exciting than 90 percent of the top fighters in the UFC.

damn had to do a double take once they started advertising Strikeforce

Machida first round ko. He will kick Randys head off.

They keep saying these fights are sponsored by mortal kombat, I'm waiting for them to bring in some bricks and have two fighters test their might before the fight starts

OH SHIT! He got caught with the crane kick!!!!!!!:eek::eek::eek:

Segal teaching Black House MMA all his moves

Damnnnnnnnnnnnnnn

DAMN

he pulled a karate kid

Segal strikes again. he is gonna start getting 100gs a wop to teach that kick. Damn. I went to get my crunch and munch and missed that shit

Ko by Crane technique.:D

Damn Machida did the crane kick from the karate kid

THE FUCKING CRANE KICK!:eek::eek::eek: :lol:

Their rematch is gonna headline

it was one of the best fights I've ever seen

i sure up Shields knocks GSP out.

I know this asshole better close this damn Firefox window

who else got tha firefox popup in spanish on their screen blocking half tha fight??

GSP actually fights like how I play him on UFC Unleashed...

I felt like I should be holding a controller

Good thing Canadian fans don't give a shit if their boy fights to finish...Shields is hypnotized by GSP's bullshit already.

GSP vs Diaz
Dana gotta make it happen ASAP

Shields strike game is so robotic

shields pulling a Diaz

FUCK STOCKTON CA & the Diaz brothers.

What other champ have you seen blast somebody to the ground and not go for the finish on his ass? Even Dana is gonna get tired of this. Even though he can't really force GSP to fight Silva..he's gonna push for it

When tha fuck is this nigga Shields getting these punches in that got GSP face looking like that???

GSP lucky as fuck he fight in Canda

Anderson Silva would kill GSP. GSP doesn't have that killer instinct.

"I nee go hospital"

This GSP figght certified the fact that he can't fuck with Anderson Silva. Silva would kill GSP.

GSP is a great fighter one of the best, but he does not have a fighter spirit. I dont think he would do well with a real tough fighter with takedown Def. and agressive striking.

I believe Jon Jones can pull it off. I feel he can take Silva. Dude is only 23 and beaten great fighters with ease. He can only go up. Damn, he can get even better and he will be the ultimate. He beat two very good fighters in a three month time period!!!:D

I'm telling you Nick Diaz will put gsp through it. Win lose or draw.
This fight has to happen cause no way he fights Anderson.

Great card, not surprised by the main event, just surprised it was on the feet so much. This should end all GSP vs Silva for p4p fighter debates really...this was GSP's Maia, a guy with little to no striking ability but got put in the hospital. I like GSP but I just don't see him at Silva's level whatsoever.

The main event was disappointing. I expected more from Shields although I felt GSP would ultimately win the fight.

and GSP is not fucking with Silva. I'm certain of it after watching this fight.
