Werdum said it in the post fight interview, they hadn't gotten deep into the fight so they were still relatively dry. Alot easier to pull off subs without all that sweat. Fedor was way too trigger happy and got in a bad spot to a BJJ specialist. Werdum was not necessarily lucky, he just had the training to know what to do when the moment presented itself. Fedor may be on the downside of his career, but he still has to be considered in the top 5 of all heavies throughout all the organizations.

And in that Cyborg fight, that has to be the worst ref I have ever seen in that sport. Seemed like she was so concerned with refing the fight technically correct, she forgot to pay attention to the condition of the fighters. This shit isn't a fight to the death or KO or submit, you need to have concern for the health of the fighter. She should have stopped it at least 3 or 4 times.

It's a philosophical saying of having the courage to rise from defeat. I would love to see a remtach.

In boxing, everyone has a puncher's chance. In MMA, only the truly skilled have a submission chance, though you don't catch someone in a sub.

Well, in this case, the quote doesn't literally translate well, because he tapped. But, figuratively, I get the intended meaning.

I'm new and naive to the sport. I'm basically going by what is see, Fedor's speech at the end of the fight not giving credit to the winner and Werdum's speech at the end of the fight not giving himself credit and still claiming Fedor as the greatest. Seems like Werdum was shocked when he won and not expecting to win.

Fedor was being proud and Werdum was trying to hype a rematch for more dough. He's already beaten the champ, Overeem. People want to see Fedor avenge this loss. Werdum was just feeding that need. That's what that humility was about, after the fight.

Dude, b/c BJJ, though there sre msny different holds/subs which take years to master, is ONE discipline in MMA.

No MMA fighter masters AlL aspects or even half. This is Fabricio's base (BJJ). Nog was all BJJ but he could also take a pounding in his prime and deliver it as well. Fabricio never had that in his aresenal.

But none of it matters. He beat Fedor and that is amazing. Now, if he does it again ...

Like I said, and you agree, BJJ is an entire system comprised of many 'tricks'. Half of his victories cam by way of striking (TKO/KO) or decisions (in which he utilizes a range of offense/defense). And, despite not having Nog's chin, he's only lost one fight due to TKO. Not to mention he's the only fighter to beat both Fedor and his brother -- made them both tap. Look, I'm not saying this dude is the best all-around MMA fighter in the game. What I am saying is a fighter using his base style to win MMA bouts, doesn't make him a one trick pony, especially when his track record doesn't reflect that.

JUST got done watching Strikeforce. Wow...just wow. Great card up and down, and a keeper (as I rarely keep American MMA events on my HD not named WEC).

Coker Eyes Cyborg-Toughill, Says Future Contenders Identified Through Tourney

SAN JOSE, Calif. – The on-again, off-again relationship between Strikeforce and female slugger Erin Toughill (10-2-1 MMA, 0-0 SF) is apparently in good standing.

Following Strikeforce female champion Cristiane "Cyborg" Santos' utter destruction of Jan Finney on the main card of Saturday's "Strikeforce and M-1 Global: Fedor vs. Werdum" event, Strikeforce CEO Scott Coker said the former pro boxer will provide the Brazilian's next challenge provided she wins in a yet-to-be announced late summer tune-up.

"Erin Toughill is someone we're going to invite into the cage to fight here," Coker said. "Before the end of the year, you'll see 'Cyborg' (10-1 MMA, 4-0 SF) and her in the cage."

Coker first began discussing a matchup between 'Cyborg' and the former professional boxer in January. Toughill was then targeted for a preliminary card contest at this past April's "Strikeforce: Nashville," but the former "American Gladiators" star in March said she was planning on leaving the promotion before ever actually making her debut.

Toughill later reversed course, and Coker said all is now well between the fighter and the promotion.

"There are miscommunications between the fighter and the promoter sometimes, but the core of it is the fighters want to fight, and the promoters want to promote," Coker told MMAjunkie.com (www.mmajunkie.com). "We're all on the same page, except when we're not on the same page."

But what if Santos defeats Toughill, too? As the one-sided beatdown of Finney proved, putting an unqualified contender in the cage with "Cyborg" leads to results more suited for a horror flick than a mixed martial arts broadcast.

Coker said he's still planning on an eight-woman tournament, and – at least as far as he knew – there are still females who actually want to fight for the right to face-off with the Brazilian terminator.

"Cristiane 'Cyborg' proved she's the No. 1 female fighter in the world, hands down," Coker said. "When we talk about the next opponent for her, we will be engaging in a tournament for 135 (pounders) first, and then we'll go up to 145 (pounds).

"There are girl out there from Europe that want to fight her, so we'll put some fights together."

While Finney might have a word or two of advice for those potential title challengers, Coker said he'll continue to identify the best opponents in the world to face his female star.

"We put on world-class fights," Coker said. "That's what we're going to continue to do."

As for Santos, she's happy to face anyone willing to step in the cage.

"I want to keep progressing and getting better," Santos said. "I want to fight whoever is the best out there."

That poor girl that fought Cyborg, just damn, I'm pretty sure, as the announcers kinda hinted, the boos were directed at the ref for lettin that brutality happen so long. Crazy how a knee to the tit was what ended up puttin her down though.

and Fedor ...I mean, I think he's good but I just never thought he's been worth all the hype people put around him. UFC may not have the best matches but the majority of their fighters would pick him apart imo.

Before losing to Fabricio Werdum on June 26 in Strikeforce, Fedor Emelianenko was one of the most sought after fighters in mixed martial arts history, but when the winning streak ended with his first loss in a decade, so did the Russian’s negotiating power with the UFC.

“I’m not interested,“ UFC president Dana White told MMAWeekly.com on Thursday.

“How many times have you seen us sign a guy when he just loses in another promotion? The guy just lost in Strikeforce, let’s sign him,” White added with a laugh.

Despite offering Emelianenko a lucrative deal before, White has never been sold on the former Pride titleholder’s top status in the heavyweight division.

“To be honest with you, without joking around, no (expletive). I honestly and truly have not believed that Fedor is this great heavyweight that everybody thinks he is. Yes, back in the day in 2005 and before that he was beating some great guys who were in their prime and was nasty. But to prove you’re the best in the world you have to fight the best consistently. You have to consistently fight the best,” said White.

“It would be like calling the Lakers the world champions that are playing some college team. You know what I mean? It’s not the same. I can’t believe... I know that everybody can see the sense in that, but people just love to, because he’s not here (in the UFC) they want to say, oh this guy could do this and that. It’s all mythology and (expletive).

“There’s only one way to find out who can beat who and that’s fight. And these guys aren’t willing to do it. So you don’t get the honor of being called the best fighter in the world when you won’t fight the best guys in the world,” added the UFC president.

White has not talked to Emelianenko’s handlers or M-1 Global following the loss to Werdum, and it didn’t sound like he has any intention to.

“I’m done playing the games,” stated White. “If we could have come to a deal with Fedor, yeah, we could have put on a big promotion and found out.

“It would have been a lot better if he had came over here and lost to Shane Carwin, Brock Lesnar, Cain Velasquez, than losing to Werdum.

“The media guys keep playing the whole Fedor thing. ‘Yeah, but it’s Fedor.’ I don’t care who it is. He’ a (expletive) man who hasn’t proved himself in five years in my opinion.”

Throughout his history as UFC president, Dana White has always been a fan of putting on the best fights, the most competitive fights, trying to stay away from putting on a fight simply for the spectacle of it.

Now with former boxing champion James Toney's debut just under two months away, he admits that he's hoping to expose the boxer who has been just itching for a chance to get in the Octagon and prove he's better than the best mixed martial artists.

As UFC heavyweight champion Brock Lesnar joked with White at the UFC 116 post-fight press conference about how he was brought into the promotion simply to be made an example of, White flipped the script.

"No, we're going to make an example of James Toney," he said with a laugh.

White knows that Toney is stepping into deep waters, facing Randy Couture for his first MMA fight. A multi-time champion of the UFC, Couture is a legend and UFC Hall of Famer, but the UFC president knows that it's a fight, and in a fight anything can happen.

"James Toney's been an accomplished fighter for many years, and he's training in mixed martial arts now. James Toney's a real fighter," White stated.

"Listen, James and I go back and forth, and he's mad at me right now, and he's going to be even more pissed off after what I just said. The reality is, I am not so delusional that I don't think anything can happen when two big guys get in there and start throwing punches. I'm sure many of you that have been in the fight business for a long time, have seen some crazy things happen."

Toney was in attendance at UFC 116, and met with reporters Saturday morning. Working full time to become a mixed martial artist, White says that Toney is training right, has his weight down, and will be prepared for Aug. 28.

"He's going to try to knock out Randy Couture that night," White said. "It's become this whole UFC vs. boxing thing. I said it before, and I'll say it again, always yapping about people who do ‘freak shows,’ I'm doing one."

James Toney will face Randy Couture at UFC 118 in Boston. The former boxing champion will also be a special guest on MMAWeekly Radio this Wednesday night at 9 p.m. ET/6 p.m. PT.
