The 2016-17 NBA schedule is out! Here are the important dates you need to know, plus places to find even more information.

The 2016-17 NBA schedule was released to the public on Thursday, with few leaks springing before the announcement. With much of the public’s attention turned to the 2016 Olympics, the annual mid-summer unveiling flew under the radar. But now we know that the 2016-17 NBA season will officially begin on Oct. 25, with both the defending champion Cleveland Cavaliers and Golden State Warriors in action.

There will be a total of 164 national television games, which we'll define as ESPN, ABC or TNT. With the addition of Kevin Durant, the Warriors are obviously the national darlings, appearing on ESPN, ABC or TNT 28 times. Golden State will face Cleveland in the marquee regular-season matchup on Christmas and also appear on ABC’s newly popular Saturday night series three times.

By contrast, fans of the Orlando Magic will have to enjoy their team on local channels only except for one game: a March 3 ESPN contest against the Miami Heat. That could change if any team surprises and the league deems them worthy of flexing into a national TV slot later in the year. Every team has at least one national TV slot.

TNT will also be introducing a new 10-week Monday night slate, beginning with a doubleheader on Martin Luther King Jr. Day. The only weeks skipping will be Feb. 20 (post-All-Star Game) and April 3 (NCAA title game).

Here are some of the schedule’s highlights and a rundown of what every fan needs to know about their team.

All times Eastern

OUR 10 FAVORITE GAMES
While this year’s schedule is loaded with intriguing matchups, there are a handful of games that stand out to us off the bat. We hope the grind of the long season doesn’t take away from any of these games. Here is a more detailed rundown of why we chose these 10 matchups:

10. Lakers at 76ers (Dec. 16)

9. Timberwolves at Pelicans (Nov. 23)

8. Knicks at Bulls (Nov. 4)

7. Spurs at Warriors (Oct. 25)

6. Raptors at Celtics (Dec. 9

7. Cavaliers at Raptors (Oct. 28)

5. Warriors at Clippers (Dec. 7)

4. Cavaliers at Raptors (Oct. 28)

3. Bulls at Heat (Nov. 10)

2. Warriors at Cavaliers (Dec. 25)

1. Warriors at Thunder (Feb. 11)

BACK-TO-BACK GAMES
The NBA has done yeoman’s work limiting the most grueling parts of the NBA schedule, but the annual tradition of back-to-back games remains. This year, the Thunder caught a break with just 13 back-to-backs, while the Hawks have drawn a short stick with 19. At least the league continues to make progress on eliminating the four-game-in-five-night stretches that caused most NBA clubs to play like zombies. Those are almost all off the calendar.

I'm run the first few post about the Cavs.

How do you like the chances of LeBron James winning his 5th MVP this season?

Armed with a full training camp under coach Tyronn Lue, will Kevin Love make a return to the All-Star Game this season?

Cavaliers stars will have minutes monitored come regular season

Last year, the Cleveland Cavaliers won 57 wins. That was far from the league-leadingGolden State Warriors’ record 73 and just a tad above the East’s second seed Toronto Raptors’ 56 wins.

They were far from dominant. Cleveland showed inconsistencies all throughout the regular season. But there was one thing that remained under-the-radar which the Cavaliers executed to perfection from game one to 82, and that was effectively managing LeBron James’ floor time.

The result was a career-low in minutes played for the four-time MVP, and a relatively fresh body come postseason.

The championship that they won in June solidified the importance of their strategy, and coach Tyronn Lue will be using the same approach this season, per Joe Vardon of Cleveland.com.

“Yeah, I’ve looked at the schedule. Just seeing what makes sense and what’s smart when playing four-in-five type of nights. Can’t run our guys into the ground. We have to be smart, understand we have to take care of our bodies and take care of our key guys. Make sure that when we get to the playoffs we’re ready to go.”

“My thing is just making sure guys are healthy, continue to limit LeBron’s minutes and he was at an all-time low last year, watch Kyrie’s minutes because we know we’re playing for something big. We know when we get to the playoffs it’s going to require a lot of minutes so with those guys and with Kevin (Love), just have to watch guys getting to the red zone.”

On the other hand, Kyrie Irving is only 24-years-old, but he’s had a very busy summer playing for Team USA in Rio. This leaves Kevin Love as the only relatively fresh member of the Big Three heading into training camp.

As they say, winning the title is already a difficult task, but defending it is even more daunting. Looking at the NBA landscape, teams have improved their respective rosters and at the forefront are the Warriors with new addition Kevin Durant.

Report: Cavs Coach Tyronn Lue trying to hire Kevin Garnett to coaching staff

The Cleveland Cavaliers as well as the rest of the NBA will be moving on to the 2016-17 season with three incredible Hall-of-Famers no longer in the league. Kobe Bryant, Tim Duncan, and Kevin Garnett all opted for retirement after this past season, each going out on their own terms.

Bryant has gone on to focus on his family and business. Duncan has been spending time with family and at the San Antonio Spurs’ training camp. Kevin Garnett, however, could be pursuing a coaching career, and he could end up on the staff of our very own Cavaliers.

Speaking with the media this morning after the third day of training camp, Cavs head coach Tyronn Lue, who has a very good friendship with Garnett, said that he would make a spot on the Cavs coaching staff if Garnett wants to coach.

Ty Lue says he'll make a spot on #Cavscoaching staff if good friend Kevin Garnett wants to coach. KG's wife pushing for it. KG undecided

— Jason Lloyd (@JasonLloydABJ)September 29, 2016

Aside from his wanting to add Garnett to his coaching staff, coach Lue adds that the 21-year forward will be attending the Cavs championship celebration in Cleveland on opening night.

Ty Lue said Kevin Garnett will attend#Cavs ring ceremony on opening night.

— Jason Lloyd (@JasonLloydABJ)September 29, 2016

The two were seen enjoying their vacation together in Beverly Hills, CA in late July, and there’s no denying that the friendship between the two could be a deciding factor in Garnett’s decision.

It doesn’t even need to be said, but if Lue and the Cavs could pull off hiring Garnett to their coaching staff, it would be a tremendous addition to an already solid Cavs locker room.

So JR Smith ain't signed yet and the Bron is apparently fed up

Saw that this morning, a few of the Cavs was out together with JR last night.

Video: LeBron James frustrated with Cavs-J.R. Smith contract stalemate
Lebron-JR-Contract-Video.png

Cleveland.com | YouTube

The Cavs started their 2015-16 training camp after coming up just two games short of an NBA title without a complete roster. Kyrie Irving (fractured kneecap) and Iman Shumpert (wrist surgery) would not be 100% in training camp and were thus limited. Kevin Love, who had shoulder surgery after the first round of the playoffs, was also coming along slowly. To top that off, Cleveland had to deal with the contract stalemate of Tristan Thompson, which wasn’t resolved until days before the start of the season.

The inability to have a full roster for training camp hurt the Cavs as they were unable to develop that chemistry and rhythm necessary for a championship run. They were able to win an NBA championship after coming together in the early rounds of the postseason and playing excellent team basketball.

This offseason, everyone is healthy, but once again, the Cavs and a player are at a standstill when it comes to contract negotiations. J.R. Smith and the Cavs have not come to an agreement and Smith reportedly rejected the Cavs’ “competitive and aggressive” offer from a couple days ago.

LeBron James, for one, is getting sick of not having Smith around. After Friday’s practice, James spoke about the importance of having Smith and how he’s deserved the contract he’s requesting.

“Negotiations are always two-sides but J.R. did his part,” James said. “He showed up every day. Worked his ass off every day. Became a two-way player, a model citizen in Cleveland and he’s a fan favorite, obviously we all know that. All of the sudden now he’s a season ticket holder at the Indians games.

“We just miss him. We miss having him around. He’s a big piece of our team and they just need to get it done.”

While the Cavs have been working out together, Smith has been doing his individual games and attending Cleveland Indians’ baseball games, often times getting standing ovations from the crowd. Smith is important to what the Cavs want to do, and James knows this is just another distraction from the main goal: defending the NBA Championship.

“I hate coming into another season – two years in a row – with one of my big guns not here,” James said. “So, for a leader of a team and for me personally, I just hate to deal with this sh*t again. It’s just too big of a piece to our team to have to deal with in another training camp.”

Nuggets only have 3 nationally televised games? What type of fuckery is this. Does the NBA not know? We on this year. That's cool. We'll slide under the radar and destroy these unsuspecting teams.

I think he hot over it. Plus KG pretty much consigned the move, to me when he said he wished he would've done it earlier in his career.

PREVIEWS
NBA season preview: Cleveland Cavaliers
September 29, 2016- by Jorge Sierra

lebron-media-day.jpg

STAYING: Channing Frye, Kyrie Irving, LeBron James, Richard Jefferson, Dahntay Jones, James Jones, Kevin Love, Jordan McRae, Iman Shumpert and Tristan Thompson.

ADDED: Chris Andersen (Memphis), Markel Brown (Brooklyn), Mike Dunleavy (Chicago), Kay Felder (Oakland), John Holland (Boston), Jonathan Holmes, Cory Jefferson (Bakersfield Jam), DeAndre Liggins (Sioux Falls Skyforce) and Eric Moreland (Sacramento).

GONE: Matthew Dellavedova (Milwaukee), Sasha Kaun, Timofey Mozgov (LA Lakers), JR Smith and Maurice Williams.

STRENGTHS: LeBron James … Others may perform better in the regular season, but nobody comes close to playoff LeBron … All-around dominant player who would make a contender out of most clubs … Sidekick Kyrie Irving is a Top 15 NBA player … His ballhandling and shot-making skills are top-notch … Cold-blooded come crunch time …Tristan Thompson is one of the finest role players in the league in recent years … Fantastic fit as a skilled hustle player on a team chock full of scorers … Many outside shooters that open up the floor for LeBron and Kyrie to operate … Kevin Love, Channing Frye, Richard Jefferson, James Jones and Mike Dunleavy all shot 36 percent or better from three last season … If they bring back JR Smith, that’s another massive long-range threat for Cleveland … Pretty physical squad who can play lock-down defense when into it … Great rebounding … Many battle-tested veterans with a team-first mentality … They will not wilt under pressure, as proved last June … Easier path to the Finals for Cleveland than for Golden State.

WEAKNESSES: With Matthew Dellavedova and Maurice Williamsgone, there’s no reliable backup point guard … That could spell trouble considering Irving has missed over 20 percent of games due to injury throughout his NBA career … They would take a step back talent-wise if they don’t bring back JR … Weak free-throw shooting team … They don’t have an awful lot of size down low … Not much intimidation around the rim … Can they stay as hungry now that they have ended Cleveland’s title drought?

PREDICTION: 1st in the Central Division, 1st in the Eastern Conference.
