How to improve the performance of your new HP TouchPad

http://www.zdnet.com/blog/mobile-news/how-to-improve-the-performance-of-your-new-hp-touchpad/3866
Summary: If you are one of those picking up a HP TouchPad at bargain basement prices, you can vastly improve your new tablet’s performance with these simple steps.

The HP TouchPad is without a doubt the most unusual gadget to hit the market in a long time, if not ever. It was introduced to the non-buying public mere weeks ago, and the dismal sales resulted in HP throwing in the towel on the product line if not the entire webOS platform. The cancelation of the brand new TouchPad line resulted in fire-sale pricing of less than a hundred bucks, and that set off a frenzy of folks trying to buy one or more of the tablet.
I have owned my TouchPad since launch day on July 1, and find it to be a suitable tablet for my needs. That suitability wasn’t achieved until HP issued a big OTA update, and even that wasn’t enough. New TouchPad owners will find the same thing, so the first things you should do is follow my simple directions to dramatically improve the TouchPad performance.

One of the biggest complaints about the TouchPad from day one was the performance, or more specifically it’s lack of it. The tablet as originally released by HP was subject to lags in execution and other annoying behaviors. This was promised to be improved by HP through the subsequent OTA system update, which did go a long way to alleviate much of the skips and lags. It wasn’t enough though, and the homebrew community stepped in to address the rest.
The first thing a new TouchPad owner should do is open the Phone and Video Calls app in the Apps tab on the launcher screen. Once in the app select the DialPad tab and enter the following in the dialer like you would on a phone:

  1. ##LOGS# (##5647#)
  2. Hit the green Dial button.
  3. On the subsequent Collect Logs screen, select Change Logging Levels
  4. Hit the Set Logging To Minimal and confirm
Your TouchPad just got a lot more responsive as HP took the tech support approach to log virtually everything behind the scenes to make debugging things easier should things go wrong. There is so much event logging in the background that it seriously impacts the TouchPad’s performance, as it is constantly doing things it doesn’t need to do. The setting you just changed reduces the amount of logging that is going on.
Unfortunately there is still enough debugging going on in the background that it still impacts the TouchPad’s performance. The homebrew community of webOS developers recognized this and created three software patches that address the remaining event logging happening all the time in the background. Once these three homebrew patches are applied, and no problem is created when you do, the TouchPad becomes as fast as any tablet on the market based on my real-world experience.
To get the homebrew patches on your TouchPad, you must enter the Developer Mode on the tablet which is the equivalent of rooting the device. This is much simpler on webOS than other platforms as proven by the method below.
In the Just Type search box at the top of any launcher screen, type in the following phrase:

  1. webos20090606
  2. Hit the Developer Mode icon that appears.
  3. That’s it, you’re ready to install anything on your TouchPad.
The Preware app is the easiest way to deal with the homebrew stuff, and the next thing to do is to download and install it. There is a QuickInstall method to facilitate sideloading apps to webOS devices, and that’s the method I used to get Preware installed.
There is a good simple tutorial to get QuickInstall/Preware installed using a Mac. Follow the simple instructions given and you’ll have Preware installed in a few minutes. There is another good step-by-step tutorial that works on Windows PCs here.
Once Preware is installed on your new TouchPad, run it and install the following Linux Application– EOM Overlord Monitoring. In spite of its ominous name, this app turns off the uploading of logs in the background; once it is run performance is improved.
Next in Preware install the following patches:

  1. Muffle System Logging
  2. Remove Dropped Packet Logging

This completes the process of disabling all of the silly event logging that HP has programmed into the TouchPad. I am not against facilitating debugging systems to understand what happened when things go wrong, but it is obvious through the performance gains observed by disabling it that HP went too far overboard.
This may seem like a big effort but the truth is it is a very simple process once you get going. You can complete it all in just a few minutes and the benefits you will observe will be noticeable. HP really shot itself in the foot by enabling all of this performance-clogging background activity by default. Now you can enjoy your speedy new TouchPad, or even better enter the world of overclocking if you want to take it to another level.

For those who already have it in hand, thoughts, comments, reviews?

Was it worth the $99 or $149?

fuck yeah its worth the $149 I spent. Having a bigger screen to read my comics and browse the internet at work (not on my phone) is all I needed....as soon as xda is done with this :itsawrap:

Same here. I just want it to mainly use as an eBook reader.

Looking forward to what XDA will do. I just hope that the Amazon.com order is legit

Is the $99 HP TouchPad Worth It?

HP has just slashed the prices on its TouchPad series of tablets, where by "slashed" I mean "dropped through the floor." The 16 GB model is now $99, and the 32 GB model is $149 -- when and where they're available. The "Buy Now" link that used to be there on HP's page, along with a list of retailers, is now gone, replaced with a "Notify Me When Available" link ... and HP's servers are being hammered so hard at the time of this writing, that you may not even be able to get your request to be notified through to them.

Scarcity's a well-known principle for increasing demand, though, so as long as you're waiting anyway now might be a good time to step back and ask yourself: Am I really going to get $99 to $149 of value out of this thing?

Slow and sluggish

That's the almost universal consensus of the HP TouchPad's reviewers, according to Marco Arment. The reasons are technical (its multitasking model overloads easily, and its apps are built using high-level web technologies), but the upshot is that despite its dual-core processor, it's slow and crashes often, requiring frequent reboots. It also has worse battery life than the iPad.

Few apps

Android tablets have very few apps designed specifically for them, but at least they can use the hundreds of thousands of Android smartphone games and apps in the Android Market. HP Palm phones, on the other hand, only have a few thousand apps made for them. And the TouchPad specifically? Only a few hundred.

No support

There will be tech support for you, certainly. But what about OS and app updates? IPad owners regularly have new features added to their tablets via these updates, which could include new levels for games or the ability to run more than one app at once. But unless HP's WebOS suddenly sees new life in another company's hands -- and app developer attention doesn't completely dry up now that the TouchPad's been abandoned by HP -- it's doubtful that there will be many updates for the TouchPad.

Other options?

Other tablet manufacturers don't seem to be faring much better than HP is. They haven't given up yet, but they're resorting to massive price cuts, sales, and promotions to move their back stock. It seems that most people just want an iPad, and only enormous discounts will convince anyone to buy anything else. (Which begs the question: What will Black Friday look like?)

There won't be another chance to pick up a new HP TouchPad this cheaply, so if you really want one then get it while you can. But if you're just going to buy a new tablet next year (or next month), it might be best to wait.

^^ good looks... just got my shipping confirmations :thumb:
