Robin Van Persie, Man U ink 4-year deal

Dutch striker Robin van Persie on Friday completed his move to Manchester United in a four-year deal, saying it was an "honor" to sign with the club.

"I am looking forward to following in the footsteps of so many great strikers, bringing my experience and playing my part to help the team compete for the biggest trophies in the game. I can't wait to get started," he said Friday.

"Robin van Persie has completed his medical, agreed personal terms and signed for Manchester United on a four-year contract until June 2016," said the statement from United Friday.

Manager Ferguson said: "Robin is a world-class striker with a proven record in England and in European football. His talents need no introduction to our fans -- he has scored a number of goals against us in some classic battles with his former club.

"His movement, finishing and all-round ability are outstanding."

The news brings to an end one of the longest-running transfer sagas of the summer. Ferguson has fought off competition from Manchester City and Juventus to land Van Persie.

However, he also needed to break an impasse with Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger, who did not want to sell last season's Golden Boot winner to a rival club.

Van Persie's departure provides further evidence that Arsenal can no longer compete with the likes of Manchester City, United and Chelsea.

Van Persie will join an attacking unit at Old Trafford that already includes Wayne Rooney, Danny Welbeck and Javier "Chicharito" Hernandez. Dimitar Berbatov is also still at United, but is likely to leave to make way for Van Persie.

Man U rejects bid for Javier Hernandez

Manchester United on Friday rejected an approach from Chelsea for Mexican striker Javier "Chicharito" Hernandez, according ESPNFC reporter Miguel Delaney in London.

Although Chelsea did not put in an official cash offer, they made an inquiry to United, based on the team's wealth of forwards in the wake of its signing of Robin Van Persie earlier this week.

Chelsea lacks options up front after the departure of Didier Drogba. Fernando Torres is the only true striker in Roberto Di Matteo's squad, making the signing of a back-up forward for an anticipated 4-2-3-1 formation essential. Their bid, however, was quickly turned away by United.

Chelsea's approach was also prompted by the fact there had already been some doubt about Hernandez's Old Trafford future given Van Persie's arrival and the likelihood of less playing time, with Aston Villa recently rumoured to be one potential destination. Sir Alex Ferguson, however, made a point of mentioning the Mexican's name when talking about his striking options after the signing of Van Persie.

"My situation now is I have the possibility that I can play [Wayne] Rooney through, Van Persie through, Chicharito [Javier Hernandez] through and I've got Danny Welbeck, who can play through... we also have young Federico Macheda, who is only 20 years old and still improving," Ferguson said.

For his part, Hernandez was quoted recently as saying "there are parts of your life when you're going to have competition. Having that competition in the team can be good. I will be ready when the manager wants me to play." Certainly, it seems that the manager wants him to stay.

United is prepared to sell one of its strikers: Dimitar Berbatov. The Bulgarian was notably not mentioned in Ferguson's press conference and the club have been trying to find a buyer all summer. So far, though, no serious interest has been forthcoming.

Hernandez's agent said the Mexico national team star is not looking to switch clubs.

"Incorporating van Persie on the team reinforces the strikeforce. There will be more internal competition and Javier is a professional and he knows he will have to face this situation," his agent, Eduardo Hernandez, told the Mexican newspaper, El Universal Thursday. "We are not looking to leave, unless the club tells us otherwise, a situation we have not received from their side. There is a contract and Javier will look to meet it. Manchester's people are honorable and they have told us nothing to the contrary."

LeBron James, Kevin Durant and Kobe Bryant praise Leo Messi

Kobe Bryant didn’t mince words when given the opportunity to talk about FC Barcelona’s Argentine: “Messi is the best! The best! I once had the opportunity to watch one of his training sessions and I really enjoyed it,” said the Los Angeles Lakers star.

The MVP of the NBA who recently claimed his first title, LeBron James, also praised Barça’s La Masia graduate. “Messi is the best player in the world. If he’s not already, he’ll be the best footballer of all time,” said the Miami Heat small forward.

Kevin Durant: “He’s an incredible player”

The Oklahoma City Thunder star was quick to agree with his two national teammates. “He’s incredible. The best in the world. I’ve seen him play and he’s truly incredible,” said Kevin Durant.

A picture speaks a thousand words!
Chinese proverb

Messi already at it again... 2 goals in the first half. Could he possibly score more than last year? 82 goals for club and country last season

Michael Laudrup @ Swansea is a dangerous thing. That 5-nil thrashing at QPR was no fluke. With football like that, I don't see how they won't finish in the top 10.

And this Barca match is hilarious. Defense has gone out the window in this one.
