Kyrie Irving’s Much-Improved Defense

When we last met in the Cavalier film room many moons ago, before the holidays, before I moved (again), etc., we talked about defending Pau Gasol in the post. This time, we’re going to focus on something I’ve spent many nights ridiculing: Kyrie Irving’s defense. This time, however, we discuss it on a much more positive note. In fact, I’m not afraid to say Kyrie Irving has been playing GOOD—not just average—defense for most of this still-young NBA season.

I’m going to break down a few plays from the Washington game last week to support that point, and it’s a great place to start as John Wall was held firmly in check with Irving having a large role in that.

The first play is Irving defending Paul Pierce at the foul line. Quite obviously, Irving is giving up plenty of size to the former All-Star forward, so Pierce decides to try to back him down in the post. Irving stands his ground, and Pierce actually trips and has to lob the ball back out to Beal on the wing. Kyrie is in a nice defensive stance, staying wide and low, and because he shuffles his feet, Pierce meets resistance when he goes to spin back middle, forcing the pass out. If Pierce doesn’t trip, he might put up a shot in the lane using his length over Irving, but Kyrie would have been in good position to do all he could there: contest the shot and box out.

The play continues with an eventual corner jumper from Kris Humphries. The shot goes long, and Kyrie is guilty here for not boxing anybody out. Varejao can’t account for both Gortat and Pierce, so Pierce gets inside position and the ball. But, Kyrie redeems himself with a swipe of the ball as Pierce has his back turned. Irving then turns it into a transition opportunity for the wine and gold. Defense isn’t about being flawless on the court, but more than anything, it is about consistent effort. Irving not giving up on that play shows just that.

♦♦♦

Next, we look at one of those pesky plays where the opponent gets an offensive rebound and the floor balance and matchups are completely thrown off. Kyrie Irving starts this particular set covering the 7-footer Marcin Gortat while Anderson Varejao is on Bradley Beal. The ball goes to Gortat in the post, but Tristan Thompson thankfully comes over to help Kyrie double Gortat. The ball gets passed back out high to Beal.

Beal leaves Varejao in the dust with a swift cut to the basket. Irving, once he realizes that Thompson has Gortat covered, sinks down into helpside and sees an opportunity to beat Beal to his spot outside the charge circle. He does just that and takes a textbook charge.

If Beal had kept his head up, Humphries was wide open for a dump-off as James also made the decision to go for stopping Beal but was a little too late. But, those are the gambles you take on defense.

♦♦♦

Here again, we see Irving switching onto a much taller player, former favorite of mine Otto Porter. Watch Irving down low as Porter cuts across the paint with a full denial. He’s got his body turned toward Porter, head on a swivel, completely denying him the ball. You don’t see that level of defense in the NBA much anymore.

As Kevin Seraphin looks to pass it to Porter, there’s not enough of an opening despite Porter having several inches on Irving. The ball gets reversed to Drew Gooden who does catch Porter on a curl around Seraphin. In past years, Irving would’ve been completely shielded away by the pick and had no effect on the play. This time, however, he does manage to jut around the screen and fly out to contest. Porter misses, and the Cavs rebound. Things like fighting around picks and putting your hand up when someone shoots should be a given, but that’s not always the case with this team or in this league.

♦♦♦

Here’s another perfect example of Kyrie being in the right place at the right time.

Paul Pierce starts to drive on LeBron from the corner. Kyrie sees this, and as Pierce goes in left-handed, Kyrie lunges for and deflects the ball to one of his teammates.

Simple enough, but you can see leading up to it that Kyrie is in perfect helpside as the ball gets dribbled around and eventually passed to the opposite corner. Kyrie realizes his man, John Wall’s, jumpshot limitations, so he can sag without worrying too much about Wall’s outside stroke. The Cavs over-help a lot on defense, but this is not one of those cases, and the way LeBron approached the play, it appeared that he was going to be the one to fall back and recover onto Wall if the ball got kicked back out.

♦♦♦

Finally, we see the crux of the issue last year: Kyrie Irving being unable to fight over the top or through picks in a pick-and-roll scenario. It haunted the Cavs for years, and while it’s still very much a work in progress, we’re FINALLY seeing Kyrie’s desire and will to work on that end and combat these. Below, we see John Wall and Marcin Gortat start a pick and roll. Before we ever even see the action though, someone on the Cavs defense yells “SCREEN! SCREEN!”. That kind of talk was not happening at any point in the last few years.

Andy, as both he and Tristan do so well, hedges and stops Wall’s drive, so the Wizard point’s natural instinct is going to be to find his cutting and rolling big man. Kyrie does a really nice job of sliding up and over the top of Gortat’s pick though, so his recovery time back into the play is only a fraction of what it is if he gets pinned behind the big.

Irving then beautifully slips the roll and snatches the ball. Kevin Love gets a kudos here for sagging to help into the paint as well as he ends up with the ball off of Kyrie’s deflection.

How do the numbers look? Well, Irving’s steals are up slightly to a career-high 1.6 steals per night. His defensive rating this season is 107, slightly better than the 108-110 range from the last three years. Kyrie also is tied for second on the team with 0.6 defensive win shares right now. Where it goes noticed most, however, is when John Wall goes 2-for-6 shooting and has just 6 points with 5 turnovers. It’s on nights like Tony Parker’s 2-for-7 effort for 8 points. Those guys can and have torched the Cavs in the past (and even this season once for Wall), and it’s been directly attributable to Irving’s lackadaisical effort on the defensive end of the floor. However, now, the Cavaliers might just have a chance at being a mediocre and respectable defensive squad if the younger guys like Irving buy in to working on that end of the floor.

Somebody put together this...we know playing great defense takes effort...doubt Kyrie guarded these cats every play...but I'm willing to believe he was the primary defender most of the night...

Who knew J.R. Smith was the key to LeBron James and Cavs’ return to winning?

The Cleveland Cavaliers beat the Oklahoma City Thunder on Sunday for their sixth straight victory, and a seemingly rejuvenated LeBron James is a big reason why. Since his return in January, the Cavs net points per 100 possessions has skyrocketed with James on the court.

He isn’t the only reason the Cavaliers are on a hot streak: the entire team is making more of their shots, producing an effective field goal percentage of 55.5 percent in their last six games, an increase over their 46.2 percent eFG% during January’s first seven games.

Defensively, they have held opponents to an eFG% of 47.3 percent during the streak, quite a bit lower than the 53.3 percent opponents shot during the first seven games of January.

The Cavs are also getting to the free throw line more often than have at any point this season.

One player, aside from James, has been at the heart of the Cavaliers’ march back to respectability: J.R. Smith.
Smith was brought over from the New York Knicks in a three-team deal a few weeks ago, and since he has been in a Cleveland uniform he has seen his win shares per 48 minutes rise from minus-0.01 to plus-0.92 and his true shooting percentage jump from 48.7 percent to 55.5 percent. He has also been better offensively and defensively in terms of points per 100 possessions.

During this six-game streak, Smith has shot 40 percent from three-point range while taking more than nine of those shots per game.

And that’s all thanks to Coach David Blatt, the J.R. Whisperer.
With the Knicks this season, J.R. was taking 34.3 percent of his shots from 16 feet to the 3-point line, and was posting a near-career low 35.9 percent of his shots from three. The Knicks offense under Woodson and Derek Fisher has been very long-two happy, and J.R. Smith bought right in. In Cleveland, however, Blatt has coaxed Smith into embracing the three-point line. Through nine games, Smith has taken a whopping 61.9 percent of his shots from three-point range, and Smith’s percentage has risen from 35.6 percent with the Knicks to 39.7 percent with the Cavs.

Another thing you’ll notice is J.R.’s placement on the floor for those spot-up attempts. He’s rarely posted up in the corner, with the Cavs instead posting him above the break, instead letting Kevin Love shift down for corner threes when they’re called for. Smith isn’t a great corner 3-point shooter, but he can definitely hit consistently from the wings, and he’s getting a lot of the same looks from the left and right wings that Miller and Jones were getting earlier in the season. Smith’s been integrated into that same role in the offense, and boy is he producing on those spot-up looks: he’s hitting 41.5 percent on catch-and-shoot threes, and an outstanding 53.8 percent on the wide open looks that Miller struggled with, per SportVU.

Shooting 40 percent from 3 while not hesitating has created more spacing.

The big key to playing defense as a guard is overplaying and directing the guy you are defending into the teeth of the defense, now if your big men allow them to score your going to look bad for doing what your supposed to do.. The flip side to that, is the better your front court is the more aggressive you can play and more risk you can take... Shit Kobe spent many years on the all defensive teams mostly playing the passing lanes, he was good though because he always had very good big men to back him up...

Pretty good view of a poster on another board

Hindsight is 20/20 - Why LeBron's resurgence makes perfect sense

disclaimer: wall of text + mostly personal opinion/speculation. reader beware!
Coming into LeBron's 2 week 'injury' [vacation] period, the swell against his efforts on the court had hit a fever pitch. 'He's not trying' 'He's checked out' etc. etc. we heard it all.
They were right. He was gassed out. He was spent emotionally. No matter how hard he tried, he had zero shits to give. He just couldn't care like he knew he needed to.

Over the last 4 years, LeBron has seen
•4 NBA finals runs with his team planted squarely on his back
•a full Olympics training and tournament
•the mental duress of 'The Decision' on both his public image and his lifestyle (he lived in Akron full-time for almost 25+ years, had to be crazy to move away)
•he had to build a new life from the ground up in Miami, and then walked away from that too
•he got married
•he had another child
•and then, to top it all off, he has 'The Homecoming' where he defies logic and goes home to a super-trade and a new 'Big 3' with Championship aspirations and expectations from day 1

I think that LeBron came back to Cleveland with the best of intentions, but I think the last 4 years had been too much for him and he had to take a sabbatical of sorts; he had to take time to clear his head and reestablish his vision. It reminds me of being 3 weeks into having your first child where you've had about 10 hours of sleep total in that time and you can barely remember really basic things other than baby formula recipes and emergency phone numbers. I think LeBron's been in that shell-shocked state since he made that big speech on opening night. I think he just crashed from all the stress and the change.
My speculative idea as to why he went down to Miami was maybe because he wanted to tie up some loose ends on the personal side of his life. Who knows how much time LeBron had this summer to touch base with the people in Miami who had become part of his life for 4 years? He had his family to take care of, the World Cup to attend, the planning of his homecoming to Cleveland, all his off-court business stuff that he can't attend to during the season as well... The summer flies by and suddenly you're 5 games into the season and you're constantly being reminded of your old schedule and the people you'd normally see if you were still back in that place. That would drive me crazy with guilt if they were people who meant a lot to me that I had left hanging in some way... so maybe he felt the need to reconnect with Miami considering it was his home for the last 4 years. See the people your mind is on all the time, slay those dragons, and come back with no mental luggage.
I think when LeBron said he needed his break 'physically, mentally, spiritually' two nights ago after the OKC game, he was alluding to the reality that it wasn't really the body of LeBron James that was ailing him (although i'm sure he's beat up), it was his mind & spirit that needed rest the most. He needed to get his head right, and if you look at the last 4 years of his life as a human being first and a basketball player second, I think it makes perfect sense both that he's struggled after such an emotional offseason and also that he would bounce back very quickly once he got some rest. I think it's just been too much for him, and with the Cavs in the east and having that insurance of knowing a couple playoffs spots will be sub-.500, it was a risk worth taking. It looks right now like it is paying off, and suddenly the Cavs are a team to be worried about once again by the rest of the league.

Yeah, it's funny how since he has came back from those 2 weeks people aren't questioning him.

But damn, it's funny that they were questioning a player who was 2nd in the league in scoring and putting up some of the best numbers in the league. Shows just how high he has set the bar.

I thought he looked bored out there more than anything. Like he just wanted April to be here so he could turn it on....

Pistons coming to play tonight...

First quarter score 17-19 Detroit

Starters shots horrible

Its official your a turd troll because what game are you watching..:smh:

Kyrie takes really bad shots. He is making them tonight but if you don't think this will be an issue in the playoffs you are fooling yourself.

It makes no sense for him to continue to spaz out and chuck the ball:smh:

He made those shot tonight but they were very bad shots. Kyrie has a bad habit of ignoring the offense or flow of the game just to get "His Points"

Often he does a lot of hero ball and chucking. He has done this the entire season. If he does not change your back court of Chucker JR and Irving will shoot you out of a game

Man I did not know that Kryrie was such a bad basketball player. No wonder he was always on a losing team:smh:

38 pts from only 22 shots :lol::lol: Boy did you pick the worst game to randomly pop shit, you couldn't have been more off base and wrong if they payed you to....

Don't say me and other didn't warn you about Kyrie and JR chucking
22 shots chucking 13 for 23 chucking.. Man if you had stats like that everyday they'd be listing you as one of the greatest players ever..
Look today JR and the others were off, and they asked Irving and LeBron to carry the team, and they did, and yet you have shit to pop during a win..:smh: Man you are sounding bitter as fuck... Why aren't you in the Heat thread praising their good play instead...:smh:

Look let me end this, I rooted for two teams for the last 12 seasons, when James played for the Heat, I never shitted on the Cavs, I always wished them well, now that James is on the Heat I never shitted on the Heat and I wish them well..
That said, 90% of what I say here in the NBA is less about me being a fan and more about me analyzing the game.. I have no problems being honest about the teams I follow, don't believe me check out my 49ers comments, and anyone who knows me, knows I am a bigger 49er fan than either a Heat or Cav fan.. So when I talk Cavs ball, I am being honest about my assessments..

No I am not, look when the Cavs had flaws at the start of the season, shit, even when they were winning, I was the one to pointing out these flaws. I praised the trade even when they was still losing..
Also remember last year how I was warning everyone about the Heat flaws, screaming loud on how we needed a guard and a big man, but unfortunately for that team, we were not able to make that trade and boy did that bite us in the ass later on..

Turd I'm say this if Kyrie didn't channel Uncle Drew tonight them ninjas would've lost end of story...

Timo, JR & Love had a off nights

Chauncey Billups reporting from SportCenter, said: "If I'm LeBron James, I'm calling Ray Allen every single day." Ray Allen who formerly played with @kingjames in Miami, has decided yet if he wants to keep his career going or call it quits and retire. Chicago and Cleveland have been trying to gets Allen since free agency. Allen would be a nice three point shooter of the bench in Cleveland. Cleveland has some nice three points player in J.R. Smith and LBJ, but Allen would bring three point shots, he's a veteran, and he's a great in the locker room too. Allen will only make the @cavs better.

The thing that impressed me the most is that he stepped up when they needed him to not because he was just hot or because he was chucking.. Plus did you se his defense he laid down, it was very impressive. In my opinion it was his best all around game for the season.
