Hackers steal $70 million in bitcoin, prompt shutdown of cryptominer NiceHash

Nearly $70 million worth of bitcoin was stolen from a cryptocurrency-mining service called NiceHash following a security breach, causing the company to halt operations for at least 24 hours.

“Clearly, this is a matter of deep concern, and we are working hard to rectify the matter in the coming days,” NiceHash said in a statement on its Facebook page early Thursday Asia time.

Andrej P. Škraba, head of marketing at NiceHash, confirmed to The Wall Street Journal that approximately 4,700 bitcoin BTCUSD, +20.08% had been stolen from a bitcoin wallet, an online account that stores the digital currency. Bitcoin wallets, like other online bank accounts, have been targets of hackers in the past.

“It was a professional attack,” Škraba said. He declined to elaborate further, saying more information will be revealed at a later date.

If that's your real and only concern, you could just store your bitcoin on a paper wallet or a hardware wallet.

It's the same concept as letting a bank hold your money vs you keeping money at home in your safe.

Also, I think Coinbase and Gemini may cover your assets if they are stolen to a certain limit. Going into next year or 2019 I'm sure more regulations and customer protection by proxy will enter the space.

I need help. Seriously. A step by step instruction on how to get the 2 step authentication on my new phone.

I finally got my Gmail setup, but I can't figure out how to get my bittrex connected. I haven't been able to access my account since October and I don't know who else to ask

I just did it the other day.

I can't remember from the top of my head but the directions were right there on Bittrex when you click to activate 2 step authentication. Very easy to do. I've done it for multiple exchange sites with no problems.

Do you already have the auth app on your phone? If you do, go to bittrex and under settings go to two factor. In the app hit the plus sign and hit scan barcode.

I don't see Where the "click to activate 2-Step Authentication" is. I put in my email and my password and it goes to, input your authenticator code"

And I can't go further

Yes I have the Authentication app on my phone. What barcode do I scan? I've tried this, but I don't see where a barcode is

Go to YouTube and search for Jerry Banfield. He has a video that will walk you through the process

Edit he mentions using it but doesn't show how to set it up. However, there are other videos that shoe you how on there

Explain please.paper wallet?? Hardware wallet?

It's a private code that only you know that allows you to access your Bitcoins. It's some random hash number like ^#%@521%$$SGDti3@.

Paper wallet = The code is literally written or imprinted using a QR code on a piece of paper.
Hardware wallet = The code is written inside a file in a USB drive or any other external hard disk.

The only thing that matters is that you know the hash number and nobody else knows it. Where or how you store it doesn't really matter. My biggest holding is NEO, and I hold it by having the private key written on a piece of paper.

I'm not using the app, I never have. I've only used the browser. On my old phone, I set up the 2-Step authorization but I forgot to disconnected when I got the new phone. Since then, I've been unable to access my bittrex account.

Should I delete the Google two-step authorization? And try to reinstall it maybe? I'm getting frustrated here because I want to check on my account status
