So how would you rank the recency bias vs respect for history among fans and analysts of each sport? Or are you saying it’s impossible because of the difference in the difficulty of making comparisons?
I’m not saying it’s impossible I just think basketball is the hardest sport because it changes the most. They didn’t shoot the 3 like they do even ten years ago; let alone 20 or 30 years! For example hockey they give assist to several players because of how the play and player involved set up. Step can set a screen for a player and then run to the 3; both defenders run to him and now his teammate gets an open shot; green passes to teammate and it’s a bucket; who created that? It wasn’t green passes that did; it was all Steph; but who got the assist? And that’s one example of many examples of not quantifying or giving credit to the actual player! People say green with the pass but it was actually Steph the whole time! There is always recency bias and because one didn’t see one play, lots of people don’t give that person credit! People say well wilt was bigger than everyone; but so was Shaq lol; so is LBJ lol; but because of recency bias, people don’t look at like that …

Very good point.

Re: recency bias though, none of that justifies or rationalizes just throwing the past out and only considering modern players in the GOAT conversation. The way you explain it, it could work either way but it only works one way, in favor of the more recent history.

I mean in basketball the old players get credit from people who played and worked in it; it’s the fans and other parts of media who have be the most bias; sometimes players are too; players like Barkley discredit little men all the time; like small ball can’t work or won’t consistently work; yet Jokic has won once and Steph has won 4 times!! Like MJ with no center or no dominant center won 6 times; but Sam Bowie was taking over him lol lol; oden was taking over KD!! Again so those are just examples; I can give many but in my lifetime I’ve only seen 5 players change the game on and off the court! Magic Bird Shaq Iverson Steph!! That doesn’t mean others haven’t influenced it or help it; but those to me changed it in my lifetime; some could say that is bias though…

I think it’s hard to get the casual NBA observer to respect history when the players don’t. I remember Jayson Tatum broke a record/accomplishment that was decades old and the interviewer informed him. His response was something like, “I was born in 98’. I don’t know too much about that”. It wasn’t that he didn’t know but moreso that he kind of blew the historical context of his accomplishment off. Kind of ties in with the “Jordan played against plumbers” shit that folks are on now

Very good example. I guess it is not so much recency bias but also era bias, and naturally the older generations are going to have less people around to advocate for their era. Recency bias is definitely a factor but era bias + attrition is a factor I didn't think about.

Probably for people his age and younger. We're both 10 years or so older than him. (I hope LeBron plays another 5 years so I won't have to be older than every player in the NBA.) I don't look at Tatum as a kid but I'm certainly not taking cues from him. I don't think your thought applies to even casual observers our age and older but people learning the game through him and his generation, absolutely.

I think the 96 nba draft was the best ever…

Multiple MVPs in Iverson, Bryant, and Nash. Hall of Famer in Allen, etc.

I remember going to the former GM Place (now Rogers Arena) in Vancouver. They held a free event for fans to watch it on the jumbotron. Good atmosphere as it was a lot of excited young fans and was leading into the 2nd season for the Grizzlies. People recognized the talent being selected in the draft, and the Grizzlies chose well in Shareef Abdur-Rahim.

Shareef was a baller!

Interesting idea if he could pull it off. He should produce it for ESPN or The Ringer or someone and make some money off of it, for him and the other participants.

Looking at 2011 and thinking back to Kyrie’s idea, if I’m Derrick Williams, I at least have reservations about it.

Enes Kanter would make it drift away from basketball and could make if controversial (and/or drag Kyrie into some shit.)
