To the list of lofty names that glamorize the city’s fried chicken stands, like Crown, Royal and Kennedy, one Brooklyn restaurant owner decided to add another: Obama.

From the restaurant’s perspective, the name change grew out of pride in the new president and a keen sense of commerce. From other perspectives, it was tone-deaf at best, and racist at worst. When the restaurant, Royal Fried Chicken on Rutland Road in Brownsville, changed its name last week to Obama Fried Chicken, the reaction was swift.

“Community leaders came. They told us we have to change the name,” said Mohammad Jabbar, 33, the manager. “They said if you don’t change it they will take action.”

It was the latest outbreak of commercial enthusiasm for President Obama and his family. An Illinois company tried to sell dolls that looked like the president’s daughters, and a Brooklyn brewery, Sixpoint Craft Ales, named a beer Hop Obama in honor of the community organizer in chief. ........

I'd suggest peeps read the entire article first.

This is a tough one.

I'm sure the owner meant well. But his enthusiasm turned into a misguided commercial attempt at his admiration for Obama. It's not like Jabbar is that racist IDIOT who runs that bakery in Greenwich Village/Chelsea with his "L'il Negro Head cookies.

Hell.

It's not like he's running this either...

When i lived in Oregon during the 90s, my Girl and I were driving to one of the beaches in Lincoln City. Saw a SAMBO'S on the way. You know my ASS flipped. Then she proceeded to give me a Oregon history lesson.

In my Angry Black Naivete, the place was actually "L'IL SAMBO'S". It had nothing to do with the major chain. All I saw was the word, "SAMBO'S". so it didn't make a DAMN difference to me. :lol:

Hence my earlier post.

Well, we have a neighborhood cafe here in Oakland that is selling Obama Coffee. It's basically Kenyan coffee, but they put an Obama sticker on the pot! LOL

Actually they might b fucked, there's a Kennedy's right across the street. So they gonn def lose customers, i pass there almost everyday, they empty everytime. As a matter of fact the first day they changed the signs there was a lot of arguing that morning from ppl passing by. the store owner didnt even want to come outside wen channel 12 (Brklyn news) came to investigate.

that's bullsheit. i remember those 'sambos' restaurants. i was 2 young to really understand it, but something about it i just didn't like....i remember getting negative feelings whenever i heard or saw pics of that place even at an early age
