non-christians: who has read the bible?

Yesterday I picked up an old 1939 version of the bible called the Complete Bible with Old testament, Apocrypha, and New Testament translated by Edgar Goodspeed. I'm not a Christian. But yo after flipping around to various sections, this shit is kind of intersting :eek:

some of it is insanity. but a lot of it is good stories. some of it is just boring, but most isn't. some is some good advice, how to live etc.

I think the parts about how THE LORD tells some guy what to do are a little cheesy. but I mean....you can't discount some of the advice on how to live.
 
I don't find it to be very well written at all. There are some poetic parts, like when Jesus talks (pretty good stuff), but the "historical" parts are severely lacking in continuity.

I would have never even attempted to, had I not been raised with it. Tough read. I still haven't managed to get through it all, but I used to pick the ones everyone raved about and read em. I'd be like "WTF?" two or three lines in.
 
It's a start my brother, keep reading it, over time you'll begin to understand more and more. True Christian believers are not brainwashed...those people are cult fanatics using Christian belief as their mask. True believers know that it's a process and that above all you must serve, have faith and not judge the walk of another. I think everybody starts the same way...reading a passage or two and watch life play out, read some more and see what happens and so on.
 
my basic problem is god as a disconnected Voice From Above doesn't make sense to me. to me god is everywhere, its the trees, the bees, the whole fucking thing.
 
I find it to be a comic book,if one loves fairy tales it will be a great read.

quite a lot humorous stuff in there.
 
Cats refuse to research where their ancestors came from but will read & believe a book the white man provided to them.

that said, the sabbath was probably a way just to legislate at least one day of rest a week. not a bad idea...especially when there were slaves whose masters might make them work SEVEN days a week otherwise.
 
Its a good start to just read the bible and most importantly while you read ask God for understanding and the wisdom to decipher what you are reading.

Some of the stuff your reading and calling lunacy is actually mean't to come over purposely that way. Did you ever think about that ?

The sayings are in dark for a reason, Now "Let there be light".

This is super correct. It says it in the Bible. It also says not to worship false idols, graven images or sleep with the same sex, but if this is really one nation under GOD, it would seem to me that America is not only Christian it's making a great effort to be anti. Can't blame the whole for the few but when it comes to serving Our Lord and Savior...everybody blames JESUS for a the people who do messed up stuff in HIS name. As far as continuity, most people should take a step back...the time line isn't the same at all, and I can't honestly say that I've even read a part of the Bible that actually had a date. Men place dates...GOD is infinite.:yes:

I'm nowhere near a perfect man, but I know who I serve, and I refuse to change just because a few people "don't get it" or grew up mad at somebody who was supposed to been a proper example. Sad, really.
 
I read it way back. There are some good parts, but the bullshit outweighs the good. As long as you look at it as the god part as man made bullshit, a person would be alright.

I just can't believe they didn't edit that book better, there are so many contractions in it. :smh: :smh:

 
Good post, Malaki. I particularly enjoy and appreciate what the Bible says about dealing with the world. In particular, the passage in Galatians: But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, forbearance, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control. Against such things there is no law.

We are all hypocrites and all have fallen (far) short of what we should be doing but God loves us anyway. Everyone has differing views of God, I personally view him as the FATHER in the parable of the Prodigal Son. This loving Man didn't care that his son was a complete fuck up. Didn't care that his Son had mixed motives and was out to pimp his Father. He was only happy to see him back. That is the fruit of the Spirit--to LOVE when no one else would love you back, to have JOY when the world thinks you are a fool, to have PEACE when payback is the order of the day, to FOREBEAR when ninjas say you gotta blast back, and to be KIND AND GOOD to others without expecting anything back.

Corny as these may be to many ninjas, this is the cornerstone of TRUTH that makes any life straight.

see now this is one thing I don't get why is the emphasis on god being a father only? who do you know that only has a father and not a mother? in nature there is a reoccuring pattern of a seed and an egg coming together to form life.

to me god is a father and a mother - the sun is the father that gives us energy and light and the earth is the mother that nurtures us and allows us to grow.

Man If Jesus was in body to answer you I believe he would have said "You are not far from the Kingdom of God"

I realised along time ago that the teachings of Jesus, tell us to go against our very self, the knee jerk response. He's saying don't do what would naturally come, because that's what everyone's doing and look at the world today?.

Do you know that If America's response to 9/11 was not to respond in with violence, but to call a meeting of the nations and do like the Godfather. You remember the that scene.. I'm a superstitious man, Sonny I will forgive but should an accident befall my youngest son, that I will not forgive. Gangsta ! :lol:

focus, but had America's response had been like that, it would have been more respected around the world today?
 
^ the only moral principle you really need is the golden rule "do to others what you would have done to you". thats really it. america is a greedy, selfish force in the world today, unfortunately. but then any institution only reflects the people that are part of it. the bible itself shows stories that illustrate the behavior of the rich and explicitly denounces the greedy rich. the wise are the ones who win in the bible, for instance solomon.

one angle I noticed is the environment and how the people in the bible are using resources. solomon, for instance, chops down many many cedar trees to build his big house. just think about it: all that desert used to be forest and lots of greenery! civilization destroys the environment, its not a mistake that the areas where civilization first started is a desert.

What if you don't care about yourself? Does that mean you can treat others based on your low view of yourself? What if your standards constantly changes and so do others? What would be the result? If you say we should take refuge in the law, where do most laws get their basis from?

heres basically what the bible talks about IMO.

the relationship between God and Man. Many people in the bible have the same struggles with faith as we do today. They believe in God but at times they wonder if God ever existed, or if God was still there. And every time God has showed love/discipline/etc to his people. Look at the 12 disciples they were almost the most hated people of the society. a banker, a tax collector, etc. prostitutes everybody was welcome.

I see it as a Love story between God and people. And in my opinion he wants us to show others this type of love in his name.

This theme of love I believe is what sets Christianity apart from other religions. Iam not saying Christians are more loving, iam saying the bible teaches Love throughout.
