I have never believed that was something the owners wanted...
It was all a 'red herring',something to 'give' the players,that the owners never wanted in the first place.

If that's the case, it says very little for forture 'mangement-employee' relations. Plus, it also damages---further--Gooddell's reputation.
Another reason why it might be true lay in the anticipated suit brought on by former NFL players concerning their sustained injuries (especially head injuries), which could spell serious problems for the NFL. If they (management) thinks that they have money problems currently, wait until the court decides the suit.
Perhaps they (NFL) anticipate future losses following the suit.
