NFL Biz Debate: Should the union fight for there to NO LONGER be pay scale by POSITIONS?

@woodchuck @HNIC @DC_Dude @EPDC @jack walsh13

As we see these running backs be devalued in the league...

And the horrible collective bargaining agreements

Should the union fight for there to NO LONGER be pay scale by POSITIONS?

You didn't ask me, but I think that the RBs should go back to how it use to be with the rookie pay scale...like you should get more money put into that first contract because you may not get a second, you sign a 4 year contract with an option for a 5th year..your body may be broken down by then,

You don't need an invite bro!

I agree.

And make sure it's a player option at the end not a team option

You think the owners would EVER agree?

I think this will pass. Remember, at one time safteys & tight ends were in this same boat, and then you had players redefine the positions. Players like Gonzalez, Reed, Graham, and Gates got those 2 positions paid. Someone is going to have to do the same for running backs.

Damn good point

I hope so

But also remember they were trying screw tight ends like Graham too during contract negotiations?

This running back thing has been going on MUCH longer...

And seems like accepted contract collusion

But you've had the same thing with players like CMac and Kamara, i think Gibbs is gonna be another one like that where the dudes can play receiver as well as RB, but i dont think they will get paid like that..as far as TE goes, like at how a unicorn like Kittle has been hurt, he's both good at blocking and receiving, but the injuries are catching up with him

Yeah, Graham wanted to be considered a WR, and Nawlins wasn't having it. To echo @black goku 's point, LT was trying to do that for running backs, and Kamara and CMC are still trying to do it, and Bijan Robinson is going to have to continue that trend for my birds.

Yeah I agree with @woodchuck and think this will pass too...

I see both angles...I will always advocate for players getting paid, but as a General Manager you have 53 players you must sign to get under that CAP...Also, the GM is looking at the RB position as a position that quite frankly can easily be replaced (unlike the top RBs like CMC, Barkley, Ekler, Henry, and etc.)

I think the only leverage the RBs have is what DeMarcus Smith was talking about with Lamar's situation...They all or atleast the top RBs can not settle for no BS contracts....They all have to demand it....

Never heard of this pool of money, but I 100% agree with Foxworth....Tie the pay into reaching certain benchmarks....Use the data to determine how much RBs will get paid....

Just like with alot of jobs, if you reach certain performance based metrics, that increases your bonus....

^^^^^^

It's interesting how the white dorks only use advanced metrics to help themselves sound smarter

But if it means more money for the black athletes?

Numbers don't mean so much.

Because I want the Giants to show me the statistics that justify their QBs new contract...

And use those same metrics to justify NOT paying Barkley

I am a Giants fan and it sucks that the economics of the salary cap and the devaluing of RBs got our best player in limbo

but there is nothing the players can do about it
the NFL salary system is fucked up and the owners/league have all the leverage. Players cant afford to sit out when their careers are so short so; so striking indivually or collectively doesnt work. If a recall correctly in the 80s when there was a strike players crossed the picket line effectively ending the strike

there are so many things NFL players gotta deal with that other leagues dont
- non guaranteed contracts
- franchise tags
- sharing the pie with 55 players + plus practice players
- pratice squads
- so many different positions which impacts how much a player is worth
- cheap replaceable players coming into the league every year from college
- no real development league or league to prove worth (G-League in NBA or AAA in baseball)
- almost no real options to make money internationally (Euroleauge, China for NBA or Japan for Baseball)

NFL = Not for Long
and there is really nothing the players can do about it (but it could be worse atleast they are treated better than UFC fighters)

@gdatruth

Remember not long ago we all SWORE no fully guaranteed contracts?

Then DeShawn Watson

So I never say never

Those old white men do what they want WHEN they want...

And thrown out all precedence and history

we'll see but i am chalking that one up to the Browns being a desperate and shitty team
DeShawn got a guarnteed contract but Lamar didnt. He got franchised and was allowed to negotiate with every team and couldnt get a guaranteed contract. He didnt have the off the field issues of Watson and has been more successful indiviually and his team. And still couldnt get it.

i am leaning towards Watson and the Browns being the exception that proves the rule but i would love to be wrong (but I aint holding my breath)

Exactly that's my point

Lamar vs DeShawn

Old white owners and execs moving goal posts

Pun intended

Well shit, there you go. Pretty good solution.

Otherwise, I don't see how this is solved. It would just be bad business to invest in RBs like that when they are so easily replaced(They just get beat up physically too).

Have to look at this from boaf sides. Because GMs don't want to tie up money. Coaches want the best chance to win to because they get fired. Everyone is looking out for number 1.

So Jone's deal is really only for 2 years (Giants can get out of it in 2025), so he is bascially getting like $80 for 2 years and the third year it would be $23 million if he is still on the roster....It does give them some flexibility if he fucks up...

I personally think Barkley is more important to that team, but we all know if you don't have a decent QB you have a zero chance to succeed in this league...

I'm a Giants fan too

When I can stand the NFL

but I'm saying as a fan of that team

Who more important?

Who should be paid more?

especially an inexperienced basic qb who NEEDS the security blanket of a good O line and superstar running back to thrive

And survive?

Yeah I think the Browns were desparate and Andrew Barry, who is a brother and the GM, does have a good track record...A window of opportunity they saw and took advantage of it...

Despite what others may think, I do think Watson will prove his worth this year and ball the fuck out....

IMO - the whole baltimore thing was just for extra publicity....i think both side knew what was going to happen, but hey let's get some extra camera time and get some people talking about us.....

Hold on you think all that Baltimore stuff was an act?

That man's integrity as a player and a teammate was called into question

His character

And his mother's intelligence?

PUBLICLY FOR WEEKS??!

what EXACTLY did Lamar his family and the team gain with all that?

Definitely Barkley is more important IMO, but when you have players like Elijah Mitchell ( a 6th rounder) or Pacheo from KC (7th rounder) these GM's just don't see the value in investing a lot of money in that position....

It sucks like shit, but that is the business.....

I know Barkley was tagged, but I wonder what did the Giant's offer him? I think I read somewhere he was offered a deal where he would get $22 million guaranteed??

Yeah cause everyone and there mother was talking about Baltimore....More spotlight on a team that unless you into football, you wouldn't have known anything about it....

I don't think the team said anything negatively about Lamar....I could be wrong though....

At the end Lamar got the money he wanted (which we knew they would do all along) and the team got some extra click beats....Shine and spotlight on the team...(Jerry Jones tactic)

DeCosta is the GM by face of that team, but Ozzie still runs things to a certain degree on that team....I think he even still has an office at the facility...

Also, Joe Schoen comes from Buffalo so he already has a relationship with DaBoll....

I am sure DaBoll gave him the ok to move forward with that Jones contract.....but like I mentioned it's only for 2 years.....the Giants not locked in for a long time..Jones still needs to prove himself....

there will never be another RB having a long career like Emmitt Smith.
owners will just hope they pan out to be great backs while on that rookie contract,
then give them one bag..............possibly franchise them after that...........then let them go and draft another RB.

Yup that is why you have so many RB by committee teams now adays...There are only a handful of RBs that are true 3 down backs in the league..

I hate to say it, but RB is the one position where you can plug and play someone.....

Kyle and his daddy have proven that theory to be correct....

I think your close

It was like only 2 million difference between the player and team

But Giants just REFUSED to budge

That's why many are saying as much as its business and these men get that?

It looks REALLY bad after giving THAT quarterback THAT AMOUNT.

Essentially bidding against only themselves.

Let me confirm

Yup yes they did bro

It's ALL in NFL thread

The coach tried his best to support Lamar

But Ravens were leaking MAD SH*T

Were the Ravens Leaking or was it so called sports analysts making assumptions about what was going on?

If the team did leak anything that was just to add more fuel for Fox, EPSN, and podcast folks to keep talking about it....

They knew the whole entire time they were going to pay Lamar because if they were not, he wouldn't got paid....

ravens weren’t leaking much, most of it was the NFLPA and that guy working with Lamar on that Ultimate Gym thing….Ken Francis I think was his name.

Stephen A Smith even said that dude was where he was getting his info from when he was quoting contracts and saying the Ravens were being cheap.
