New $249 Google Chromebook. 10sec startup. Lighter than Macbook Air...

Right, my mistake!

Why didn't Google give it a different name, Chrome+ or something like that, makes it confusing.

They did give it a different name....it's called Chrome OS....

Thanks for your help anyways.....:hmm:

Im getting one. I just bought a laptop but needed something for my light duty stuff. Tablets dont have USB and enough power for me. This fits the bill and isnt as small and limited as a netbook.

You aren't doing that much more than a tablet with this and a netbook will probably run more programs. I don't think a lot of people are grasping this. This isn't Android and you are restricted to running everything through the Chrome browser. If it isn't in the Chrome Web Store you are pretty much screwed.

Some people can deal with this. If you have music or videos that you need to store this is useless with only 16GB. Unless you want to carry an external drive.

Good gift for my grandson. He's a third grader and needs to upgrade from his compaq netbook running xp.

Can you give some examples of shit most people do that they couldnt with this type machine? Maybe I'm missing something.

Photoshop, gaming, video editing, the laptop seems decent for surfing the internet but its no replacement for a actual laptop with a bigger hard drive and not a mobile processor

Gdocks offline support is partial. Gmail works but docs offline mode only saves in the docs format, not Word or Excel. You can't create new calendar events, but can view them offline. The offline support depends on if the app supports it, and even then how much it supports it. Remember it's he Chrome store, not Play so it's only around a thousand or so apps that work offline, not hundreds of thousands like in play.

With that said, the apps in the store are mostly web apps, or things like Cut the Rope, or Netflix. Torrent or other powerful programs are remote programs and don't directly run on the device. If you couldn't get it done on a tablet with a keyboard, or a netbook don't expect this to be any different.

I don't know about the newest version but when it first came out you couldn't even save an image on the HD. If you plugged in a SD Card it'll automatically upload the photos to google's online photo gallery Picasa. If you think the iPad is limited, you're walking into the Lion's Den with Chrome OS.

It's a little bit better now, but there's still a lot of limitations like that. People cosigning the Chromebook as it's a normal laptop is kind of like the people who are going on and on about the Surface without actually using one. They think it will run anything like windows (or in this case, Android) and don't realize there's some key differences. Immediately comparing it to a Macbook Air or saying it's more powerful than a tablet kind of proves it here.

the op clearly says its not a laptop replacement and not for power users so im not sure what ur saying.

photoshop has a web app and it comes with a photo editing program. not sure what its called or how good it is. again this is for casual use, not for pro photographers doing batch edits n shit. view pics, streams hd videos, runs apps, surfs the web... thats most of what most people do.

there are a million web apps out there to do damn near everything. i wouldnt want to do anything that was really resource intensive on this and i wouldnt want to fuck w/ torrents on here cuz its not enough physical space. 100GB storage in the cloud but only 16GB on the device. i wouldnt care that it saves docs in whatever format long as once im back on a network i can open it like i never left.

and to be honest, how often do u use your laptop when you dont have a connection to the web? for me its close to never. all the work i do on computers is connected to the web.

u can save whatever u want to the device. and save what u want to the cloud storage. i like chrome os and jolicloud (another cloud os) way better than ios.

nobody said its a normal laptop. i clearly said what it is in the op. i compared it to the macbook air cuz obviously they bit the look of the macbook air. for $250, imma agree with most of the reviews and say this looks like a pretty good idea. i will definitely cop for a gift at least.

I have the original chromebook cr-48 and got tired of chrome os. I ended up installing Ubuntu on it and it's still kind of sluggish.

This one is sposed to be way faster than that one but not as high powered as the latest Samsung one. So in the middle...

Yup! What's worse is the fact that we have posters here who have consistently bashed the iPad for its "limitedness" now on here cheering for a device that is even more limited. I think the chromebooks are cool but for enterprises who used virtualized apps not for consumers. With the Kindle Fire and new iPad Mini coming out there will be no benefit to owning a chromebook.

I got it free from Google as a beta tester. Some of their apps just stopped working on it. The volume level on it was terrible you could barely hear youtube videos. They had no app by default to utilize the built-in webcam and the two apps they did have was a pain in the ass to get it working and it sucked. The trackpad was highly sensitive and still is even with Ubuntu on it. That was for the CR-48 model. I'm sure it has improved with this new release but if you don't have a wi-fi signal this thing is useless.

What was wrong with chrome os?

first of all the ipad is like $600 - $700. the ipad costs AS MUCH OR MORE than a good laptop. this is $250. even the baby ipad is gonna fall in the $400 range most likely.

and if u have a powerful desktop or laptop, why wouldnt this be a decent backup machine for $250? thats how i see it. now maybe i'll get to mess with 1 and find out that it sucks but every review i read says the shit is nice for the price.

plus this thing accepts outside memory (sd cards) and an ipad does not.

If you are a Google services user (docs/gmail/music/reader/calendar and so on) chrome os is an great choice imo. I'm personally a fan of chrome os. I had a cr-48 and used it almost exclusively. The drawback was it was underpowered, and stuttered after maybe 7+ tabs opened... not to mention it was never meant to come to market and the OS early on was not what you have today. 95% of what I do on a computer is in the browser anyway and I can't speak for the rest of you, but I have 0 internet downtime so thats a non issue... some of you have may have Comcast though :dunno: Also, there is some offline gmail/docs capability as mentioned before and it will sync when a connection has been reestablished.

Excellent choice for the tech impaired... gave my mother my 550, she loves that thing... comes on under 10secs, instant resume, no slowdown, no virus worries, no maintenance... she can't accidently fuck it up like a pc or mac.

I have several computers (pc/mac/linux) that I barely use at this point... Only when I edit videos of my kids. I use logmein on my chromebook to access my HTPC to download my shows/movies and have had to troubleshoot my wife's computer a few times. It's come a long way since the cr-48 beta launch

It's all about YOUR needs and how you use a computer. I think most people would be surprised at just how much they only use the browser. Plenty of people only use a computer for shopping, twitter, youtube and Facebook. The browser is the only application some people need.

That's real.

Funny thing is alot of cats will buy a $2200 macbook and use it just the way u described. movies, facebook, youtube, email, twitter, browsing, pandora, etc...

Yeah but with a MacBook Pro you get a better machine, better interface, more intuitive OS, a better browskng experience, and the best customer service in the industry so you can't even compare them.

Is weight REALLY a factor? I swear, Americans are becoming more and more pussified by the day. Maybe American women really are stronger than men?

Better machine? This argument is like arguing over cars...Perhaps, but unless you need a BMW m5, a Honda Civic will do just fine to take you from point A to point B.

Better interface? Still unknown to most/all.

More intuitive OS? Depends on your wants and needs. Less is more.

Better browsing? Again, until we get our hands on it, how would we know?

Best customer service? Apple care is GREAT. I don't know about Google's Customer service so I can't sayit's better or worse.

That said, many people don't need a $2200 machine to do things like browse and Facebook, etc...a $250 machine will do that just fine. Isn't better to pay for what you need than pay for what you don't?

This may be a personal pick up, but I know at least a half a dozen close friends and family members that could benefit from this.

And boom goes the dynamite...you pretty much summed it up!

Until I see you guys actually buying this thing rather than speculating (like you usually do), ill assume this wont sell like all the other chromebooks.

already sold out on day 1.

no chromebook has gotten the type of press that this one is getting. its damn near 100% positive from anybody that has got their hands on one... even from the apple fanboy sites.

Sold out mainly due to limited manufacturing (remember these things haven't been selling well, so I doubt they shipped a million of these to retail), but I'll take it as a win. Hopefully the sales keep up.

Btw once these chrome books start gaining traction (which I still think is a few years off), expect the PC industry to be fucked to holy hell. Apple is already eating into their profits, but coupled with this... Expect some PC companies to go under in the next 3-5.
