New $249 Google Chromebook. 10sec startup. Lighter than Macbook Air...

Sold out mainly due to limited manufacturing (remember these things haven't been selling well, so I doubt they shipped a million of these to retail), but I'll take it as a win. Hopefully the sales keep up
we'll see

Btw once these chrome books start gaining traction (which I still think is a few years off), expect the PC industry to be fucked to holy hell. Apple is already eating into their profits, but coupled with this... Expect some PC companies to go under in the nex
t 3-5.
yup... this offering is more about changing peoples mindset towards a new kind of computing. they are trying to being the cloud to the everyday user. it might be a lil early but thats where everything is headed.

Consumers will go for the iPad or Android Tablet before they go for a ChromeBook.

You really think they are going to sell 15 million of those things in 3 months? You know when a new movie comes out it has a huge first week and then drops off up to 50% the next week? That's exactly what's going to happen with this ChromeBook. Once those iPad Mini numbers drop it won't even be a question. Ontop of that you just posted Amazon's sells...you can buy Apple product in so many places so sells would be spread out.

the point is... its selling really well. it can not compete toe to toe with a macbook pro or any high end laptop but it can do like 90% of what they can do at 10% - 25% of the cost. that is a very interesting to alot of people.

Whoa there buddy... 90%??

Lets just leave it at a Chromebook can do the browser just as well as a Macbook Pro. Cause I can randomly pick 3 apps out of my Dock that will completely shit on a Chromebook.

Interesting quote by the author in the comments:

I use my Macbook via Chrome Remote Desktop for editing in LibreOffice and it works really well - in a hotel doing that right now in fact (over 3G)"

So no, he didn't leave his MacBook Pro...he just uses another device to interface with it. If it's not good enough for him to switch over for word processing why would you want it for anything else?

Interesting quote by the author in the comments:

I didn't think I'd replace my MacBook Pro with a Chromebook, but the truth is my old Apple friend has been sitting on the end of its Kensington cable in the office for weeks now, occasionally acting as a printer server or a remote application server but otherwise gathering dust.

True. I would never guess people would put down a powerful macbook for a lightweight cloud device but as we see... at least 1 apple fanboy did.

Shit don't run windows or mac os x so any real programs will not be available for it. Free alternatives are mostly shit.

This would be killer if it had 4g or allowed you to insert a 4g card. The fact that it performs like a cell phone dock like the Atrix or gets outpaced by the Transformer for around the same price makes it useless you have a tethering plan.
It is too much hassle to pull up to a McDonald's or Starbucks for Wi-fi or fumble around with your phone to set up tethering to get Internets.

Acer said the Chromebook is currently accounting for 10% of global sales.

More partners are announcing new models. HP is the latest. Anything over $400 price point is stretching it though.

I think anything over $200.00USD is stretching it. I bought 3 for my employees and it's really good because everything they need to access is online...but outside of that it sucks. The OS is so half-assed it's ridiculous. You can't put anything on the desktop, can't rearrange the order of any of your "apps", the things they call apps are really just bookmarks, and there's a lot more. I think it's a cool concept but as of now Google is totally half-assing it.

Acer C7 Chromebook
Get the basics done, hassle-free. Fast, simple and easy to share.
For $199.

I got 3 of these...they are cool but cannot hold a candle to an Android or iOS Tablet. Google needs to step their damn game up...the OS doesn't even have a notification center. If you wanna see if you have a new email you gotta keep logging onto gmail or your corporate mail system every five minutes. The lack of any real time notification system makes this a joke for both corporations and personal use.

Maybe you don't understand the os that well cuz u can move the order of the apps/bookmarks easily.

It's basically built for use on the web and out of my iPad, android phone, and android tab...It's the only device that can hang with me all day...Aside from torrents and photo shop, the Chromebook can handle basically all of my day to day needs pretty well.

And the reason I said $400 is cuz the newer ones have better specs like more ram...better screen resolution.
I thought netbooks got cannibalized by tablets?
It's not a netbook. Netbooks had tiny keyboards and were usually slow as fuck. These boot up in under 8 seconds and have full size keyboards.

This is like a tablet in the shape of a laptop ?
Not really...It's like a new operating system built for the web.

Not really...an iPad or Transformer would run circles around a chromebook or box...it's not even a competition.
No it doesn't. I have an iPad. Depends on what your needs are.

thought about buying a netbook. decided against it.
Things moblack would sayin Chromebook thread.

Without office and almost every program it is a fail.
You can use the online version of office and/or Google Apps. Far from fail. They are Amazon's best selling computer access been sold out worldwide.Fail? The og Surface is closer to fail than the Chromebook.

Can't you use Gmail and Google documents to work? I use it on my job.

Yes. The way I see it, if the majority of what u do on a computer is done onthe web, it may work for u. If u are using a lot of desktop programs like Photoshop, video editing, music programs...this is not the computer for that.
