Networking...?

This is a spin off of the "Anyone here doesn't have a degree and has a job paying a livable wage?", thread.

I'm trying to transition into a marketing position somewhere in the Chicago area. I am currently undertaking an AA in business management with a marketing focus. I have tried looking at different seminars and conferences in the midwest, but they are WAY to expensive. They average around $1500 per conference, not including traveling, hotel, and ground transportation. Plus, many of them are during the week when I will be working.

My question is, how do you start networking with people in the industry when you don't know anyone in the industry?

Sales is the entry level into marketing. Have you done any sales yet?

yup. get a sales position, leearn the product, get cool with some folks in the marketing dept/ network like crazy once you are in there. way easier to make moves from within.

You don't no one will network with someone not even in the field.

right. you have no value to them at this point. they have no reason to fool with you.

Nope. I haven't done any sales at all. The part of marketing that I like messing with is ad campaign and brand development/marketing. I like the creativity of it all. I'm just not sure where to start as far as getting my foot in the door.

start in sales, do volunteer work, get an internship, etc. Anything to get your foot in the door and don't waste a single opportunity once you get in and maximize off it. Join a prominent marketing group on LinkedIn which would give you exposure to connect with some people. Ask for advice and contacts if you can.

I have people out of the blue contact me on LinkedIn all the time asking similar questions and it does help if somebody is willing to offer some real feedback. All it takes is one person to open the door for you then you

why would anybody even look at your resume when there are experienced cats with 10+ years marketing experience waiting to take damn near entry level positions. again, get in thru the sales door and put yourself in position.
