Maybe it's because I'm a geek and have been in IT forever that makes me such a stickler for this but if it's one thing I cannot stand is bad netiquette. By now you would think some people know the rules. Or perhaps some just don't care? This board isn't mine but I know that alot of boards would ban someone for continually breaking simple net rules. Here are some:

The first rule of typing is to be aware that typing in capital letter makes it look like you're shouting. I often will say "WHY ARE YOU SHOUTING?" in chat rooms or message boards. If you want to emphasize something, there are a plethora of HTML tools and options to use and if not, just use the asterik around words or type in bold or italicize the font.

Write a meaningful subject line or thread topic. Never underestimate the importance of this. Write a descriptive subject line to catch the reader's attention. Saying "Chapter 11" could mean anything. If instead you said "Questions about Chapter 11," the recipient will know the topic.

Keep it short. You want to keep words to a minimum. It's great that you you can skip many formalities. Everyone expects you to get to the point. The rule here is less is better.

Use your judgment with attachments, embedding, etc. Do not send large attachments via email. When posting use links for users to download if files are too large.

P-r-o-o-f-r-e-a-d. We don't always do this but it's good run a spell check on your emails, then proofread. On message boards typos are more acceptable but still you could accidentally send the wrong message with the misspelling or misuse of a word.

Be careful what you say. Remember this is the internet. Remember that an email or a message board post can be seen by virtually anyone and everyone and you never know who.

Do not be flame happy. A flame is an angry and sometimes abusive message, email or post. Flames are part of e-tradition, but flame wars can get out of hand. And really, it's not that serious!

If you're entering a chat room or message board for the first time, take a while to get familiar with the rules that may apply. The variation in what's acceptable can range broadly even between similar types of sites. This process of learning something about the atmosphere of an arena is called lurking. Once you think you know what you can and can't say, go ahead and join in.

Try reading, then posting.

That should be another rule of netiquette.

One thing I hate on IM or whatever is when people leave their computer in the middle of a conversation and don't say "brb" or whatever. Something to let you know that they aren't there. Have a mofo like those dropped call commercials. "Hello. Hello. HELLO???"

I do it at work alot because I can't very well tell my boss, can you hold on while I type brb?

But it annoys me and I feel bad for doing it to people.
