Netbook sales see large drop in growth



Often heralded as the next big thing in consumer computing, netbook shipments saw a sharp decline in sales growth for the first quarter of 2010. IDC, a market research firm, reports that retail shipments of netbooks fell from a significant 872% growth in the first quarter of 2009 to just 33.6% in 2010's first three months.

The low-cost, portable devices struck huge success with consumers back in 2008 near the start of the recession but have since waned as customers start to look toward upcoming alternatives. DigiTimes reported this week that manufacturers of LCDs
used in netbooks have started to cut production due to the downturn in orders. They claim that both HP and Dell have substantially reduced investment into 10" netbooks, though Acer, Asus, and Samsung remain strong-footed in the market.

Regardless of the sharp decline in sales growth, netbooks are still growing in numbers. The reported 33.6% growth for 2010's first quarter brought about 4.8 million shipments of the devices, up from the 3.6 million shipped in the same quarter of last year. Robert Shim of IDC predicts that netbooks will definitely establish themselves as a permanent force in the market, but won't become the dominant figure as they were predicted to be because of the limitations they pose:

"They're going to be a permanent part of the landscape," says Shim. But consumers have become less willing to give up features available on full-priced laptops—such as the ability to play video games or edit photos—in favor of netbooks' low price, he says. And full-fledged laptops are themselves becoming slimmer and smaller."
 
They can't compete long term, just a temporary fad. Processors in Netbooks are seriously slow and with 2-4-8 or 16 gig hard drive space it's just a waste of time.

Laptop prices have been going down and know Ipads and other tablets will put the nail in the coffin of netbooks.
 
I love my Asus...shit is fast...but I was lucky to get it w/ XP on it...so I'm sure that helps out a bit...

wtf? Netbooks have had hard drives of at least 160 gigabytes for a while now. Yes, the procesors are slower, but they aren't intended to be laptop replacements-more like laptop companions.
 
If you habe a mobile phone and a laptop there's really not any need for a netbook.and with the econ in the tank their sales should level off

the netbook has only two serious uses..



1. cheap.. great for college kids that arent gamers. great for cheap second home computer for surfing and email.. i've seen small doctors offices opt for netbooks.. instead of a desktop..

2. business travel. my girl got a netbook just for travel. company laptops are usually bulky.. they get cheap business models that are usually huge in size and are heavy.. so the netbook is great for creating powerpoint presentations for half the size and weight..

True and true. I have 3 laptops, a 4th for work, a netbook, a desktop, two Android phones and an iPod touch. Definitely overkill, but my netbook still has a place. THat thing is so light-makes it perfect for traveling. Plus the battery lasts 8 hours so I'm good to go almost all day. I'm still on the fence about the iPad. I don't need it at all, but I kinda want one. I'll either see if my chick will cop one for me or wait til gen 2.
 
Speed isn't the major issue with those netbooks, it's the video. That shit is soo choppy it kills it. Plus no one wants to look at an 10" screen for too long. Unless you're a kid doing a paper those shits are trash. They are too small. You can go ahead and cop a damn eMachines for $300-$400 with a much larger screen and good power.
 
I love my netbook for browsing on the net when i'm watching tv or when my main laptop is occupied. But the arrival of the Ipad and HP Slate will kill the netbook.

True but its not about "need" as much as it as about portability and convenience. I have a ton of gadgets but still really get good use out of my netbook.

The main reason their sales have dropped is because laptops prices dropped like a mutha. They were supposed to a cheaper alternative but laptop prices have gotten significantly cheaper over the last 12months. The cut their market alot. It only appeals now to those who just "want" one as a laptop/pc supplement (or for traveling entertainment/media).

:yes::yes: I'm on the road every week and my netbook outperforms my work laptop since i'm on linux and it using crappy vista. Perfect for meetings,presentations, and on long flights.

I run my netbook thru my projector on a daily basis...never had any issues w/ choppy video...

I dont get it either. Does the ipad/slate support flash, hold up to 250gigs of media, have a hard keyboard for wordprocessing, doc editing, syncing, charging devices, upright hands free screen, multi-tasking, browsing, etc...


They're two different things and i dont see how one will eliminate the other.

yall are really missing the point.. end of the day if you want a computer or a laptop, you can still get one,

the reason people are gravitating to the tablets, and mind you microsoft/bill gates has been singing the coming of the tablet for years, its a replacement/upgrade from a dying medium.. the newspapers, magazines, casual games like soduko/crosswords.. all in one device that you can updated with a few strokes

people do want magazines and newspapers they dont want to use a laptop on the train.. i can hold my iphone in a crowded train and i can see myself holding an ipad on the train with one hand while i occasionally tap/swipe with the other hand.. on a crowded train the only thing i'm doing with a laptop is holding it in my bag..


someone said why use apps if you can use the net.. if there is not net access your app is downloaded, its a virtual magazine, document, etc..

i'm seeing more and more readers on the train, and some of them i know from work and they do have androids and iphones.. but they want to readon a magazine/book size device..

these same people also love not having to go to the local bookstore or mall to get books..


half the "i have a laptop for that" are probably only using it at home.. i dont take my laptop to work cause i have a computer at work, so when would i need a device? ahh during my commute.. i aint traveling with no damn laptop, its actually sad and funny watching people try to play a keyboard game on their laptop on the train or try to watch their portable dvd player then get upset when someone sits next to them making the viewing angle and convenience of something portable actually not convenient at all..


again most people see this for what it is.. an ereader that does so much more..


if your calling it a computer you have comprehension problems..even if the plan was for ipad to replace laptops and computers.. its still years away from being thought and accepted as one.. it does have iworks and you can use a bluetooth laptop to edit documents if you must do work

how the tablets kill the netbooks is many people wanted a light weight device, netbook was a good option, but it goes back to my original comment unless its just a cheap pc for school/small office or for real business travel where your gone on business for a few days and need to get some work done but need to travel light.. an ipad is perfect... less and less people will need a netbook more and more people will need a tablet..

yes need, because there are serious magazine and newspaper subscribers out there, they could get their news late and collect or throw away the magazine OR.. they could download it day and date of release instantly



another interesting comment one reviewer made a while back.. the ipad does not require a tech or tech support.. a phone call or a trip to the apple store at the most..

a netbook requires the same type of tech support a normal computer does.. and people love the idea of not have to deal with geek squad, tekserve, dell support, microsoft support, a local tech that charges cheaper than dell and will work for less per hour that alone is already too much work for most common users
 
No I think you missed our point...if/when the iPad/Slate PCs catch on it's bcuz it's the next trendy must have item not bcuz it can outperform/out does netbooks...based on this lengthy write-up you are saying what we basically said already...both items are not comparable...it should not be a case of either/or...

Not quoting all that shit but jagi, YOU missed the point. And in doing so you're making our point. They are two different devices. Theres not much overlap and one wont replace the other because they appeal to different users who have different needs. If its an souped up e-reader, then call it that and stop comparing it to netbooks.
 
Saying iPads/Slate PCs/tablets/whatever will replace the netbook is like saying laptops was supposed to replace desktops...and netbooks was supposed to replace laptops...cats due to their finicky nature wanna write the netbook off quick as shit but it serves its purpose as mentioned several times here in this thread...unless the "iPads" can do what netbooks can and more it ain't wiping shit out...it will just create its on niche...why niggas insist on being on that A to Z shit I'll never understand...
 
The decent ones are $450-500 now. You can buy a normal more powerful laptop at that price. And almost all of them have Windows 7 Starter which has a ton of limitations.

nope i get what yall are saying, i'm saying that people thought they needed a netbook, but with a tablet option.. the netbook is no longer a consideration unless your a business traveler or on a budget for your new office or college.. as a media device the netbook loses its appeal and it shifts to the tablets.. because, yes like we are all in agreement they are different.. but again the popularity for netbooks for many was to use as a light weight media device not a computer in that sense the netbook has been and will further be replaced..

I would of agree with you until about 2 months ago. See one of my co-workers bought a netbook for her daughter when one was on sale for next to nothing at Wal-Mart. She is a Mac girl and one day she called me to install a copy of Office on the netbook, of course the copy of Office came from BGOL (shameless plug). All it gooduntil I swing by a few weeks later to see whats going on with the netbook and to see and touch it up close. I get there and what do I see...one of the PowerPoint presentations we were working on on the netbook. Thats when I realized what the netbook can be for. I can do most of the work I do with a laptop or desktop but on something so small its much easier to lug around than my work laptop.

Additionally, for the media aspect its great for her daughter becaue you may pause before you give your 6 yr old access to your $600 tablet. However a $250 netbook....very different story.

that's a good point and an acceptable view of one versus the other.. but i'm still talking about people that dont want to do powerpoint or work.. its purely for reading and viewing as a screen.. many netbook and laptop and desktop people can read ebooks on their devices.. but the chose kindles or sony ereaders for the viewing experience that a netbook or laptop or desktop can not offer....



end of the day there is the one thing we keep falling for, the arguments fail to acknowledge that there are techies and geeks and plain consumers that dont need all that shit.... and i'm speaking for that guy who usually doesnt have a voice here at bgol..

i'm trying to find an interesting time magazine article on steve jobs and the ipad that does a better job at explaining my points, when i do it can hopefully say what i'm trying to say better..

Again you just saying exactly what I said...and again I'll say it too...if "iPads" in their current state replace netbooks it's not bcuz of functionality but bcuz of fickle consumers...anyone using a netbook just as a media device is a retard...I guess in keeping up w/ the Joneses ppl feel the need to sacrifice one expense for the other...I have a desktop laptop netbook and an iPod/Archos...and w/ the right additons I'd get a next gen iPad too...and they all serve their purpose...consumers are always quick to "replace" something w/ the next "best" thing...and all I'm saying is the iPad is NOT a legitimate netbook replacement...Steve Jobs is tryna move units so of course he will say that bullshit...but that's exactly what it is...bullshit...

FYI you can do spreadsheets, PowerPoint, and Word docs on the iPad, so I don't understand that argument. Or a I missing something?
