June 2012 Gallup Poll: In US, 46% Hold Creationist View of Human Origins

I had no idea that there were so many Americans who reject the essentially factual account that humans and all other species evolved from earlier species & share common ancestors. It wasn't until a few religious zealots at my job started proselytizing that I became aware of just how widespread the literalist interpretation of the Bible was in America. It is truly disturbing.
Anyone else encounter people like this? How do you feel about it?
Is there anyone here that rejects the theory of evolution? If so, why? It boggles my mind.
