NBC Execs Open Up About 'Carmichael Show' Cancellation

This was my favorite show on TV, sad that it was not supported. I will never understand how a show like Seinfeld gets a decade, where something as well written as this show dies so fast

The series, which was co-produced with Universal TV, was axed in June after three seasons.
While at the Television Critics Association summer press tour on Thursday, NBC brass opened up about the decision not to bring back The Carmichael Show for a fourth season.

"I think the collective decision was maybe [that] it's best to let the show end," NBC entertainment president Jennifer Salke told reporters. "I have to say personally for all of us, it's a really hard decision that wasn't just made on one side of things. It was one of those difficult decisions that kind of live with you for a while that you don't feel great about because you wish it had done better. … This was the situation we found ourselves in."

The beloved series, which wraps its run later this month on the network, was one of NBC's rare co-productions with an outside studio, 20th Century Television Fox. That, combined with the tepid ratings for the show, led to the cancellation.

"We love the show. I mean, creatively we've been very involved in the show, involved with that cast and Jerrod [Carmichael] and everyone involved with it from the start. It's been sort of this labor of love," Salke said. "Everybody was hoping the show would really perform and grow. I think we saw a great kind of stable audience sort of slowly building and a lot of critical attention. … But at the same time, it remained in a challenging situation."

Salke also pointed out that the series began at NBC and Universal Television, where it was originally developed as a comedy called Go Jerrod Go that narrowly missed a series order for the 2014-15 season, before 20th TV was brought in.

"There was never any sense of lack of ownership on the show," Salke said. "That never came into play."

NBC Entertainment chairman Bob Greenblatt pointed out that The Carmichael Show lasted longer than several other higher-rated comedies at the network. The series currently stands as the network's longest-running comedy on the air. (Superstore will begin its third season in September.)

The cancellation came on the final day of The Carmichael Show's cast contracts with 20th TV. Several of the show's castmembers have seen their stars rise since the show began in the summer of 2015, including Girls Trip breakout Tiffany Haddish, Get Out's Lil Rel Howery and Carmichael himself, who said he was "excited to go make other things that I love" in a statement when news of the series' demise broke.

"That whole cast — they're all incredible," Salke said. "We're hoping to do more with them."

I like the Carmichaels. It's humerous in some ole updated & black "All In The Family" type of way. However shitting on Seinfeld ain't gonna make your argument. Seinfeld was original, clever, consistent, & funny as hell.

Somebody will scoop it up. It was a show for network TV anyway. I'm almost willing to bet Netflix or Hulu will pick it up the show will be better off for it. If gets the creative freedom Aziz Ansari has with Master of None or Tina Fey has with the Unbreakable Kimmie Schmidt there's reason it can continue.

They show felt kind of claustrophobic. To contained at times. Most shows that are filmed live do give off that stage play feel. And it was heavy on the dialogue, but that's where it wanted to go with it. The content is cool, but you gotta really play it out sometimes to where the dialogue isn't necessary. They showed many glimpses of being a capable of doing that. Still I enjoyed the show for what it was.

The only thing is now that the stars are proving that they doing more. They no longer have the homebase that the show was. Stars in the past tried to transition from show to films and failed. Here you had the case where things are popping off. May be it's best for their careers.

the show was wack

it was like listening to a sermon but each actor was reading different parts of it
Yep, every episode was they were trying to cover some serious issue. I want to be entertained not lectured.

Seinfeld even in the early days was at least in the top 50 or shows and every year it improved to the third year where it finally caught on. Carmichael was #97 the first year and #100 the second. Can't find anything on the third but it's likely was worse. they gave it a shot

To each their own but I thought the show was great in the sense that it pushed the envelope (abortion, rape, assisted suicide, mass shootings, etc.). It wasn't the same sitcom comedy you catch with any old sitcom. You can tell Jerrod has his fingerprints all over the writing if you've seen any of his stand up. The acting was ehh from anyone not named Loretta or David Allen Grier but got better each season (not saying much though). I did like Tiffany Haddish. Though her character was one giant stereotype, I like how she would flip it on folks using her reasoning/logic to prove her points.

I also liked how they were having guest appearances by other black actors/actresses that you hadn't seen in a minute. I can't compare it to Seinfeld because I didn't care for Seinfeld. :dunno:

I'm trying to support all black films. Hell, I plan to give "Marlon" a chance in the fall. And yes, I tried to watch that "uncle Buck" remake with Mike Epps.

Saw an episode and I wasn't impressed

And why are you comparing it to Seinfeld? It lasted a decade because people watched muthafucka

This is like saying "How the hell is Colin Kaepernick looking for a job after 6 years in the NFL while Tom Brady played for more than 15?" Comparisons to a GOAT is not a smart way to defend your side even if your side deserves to be around.

i understand his point. seinfield started out like the carmichael show. 6 episodes in the summer. it didn't fight a decent audience until during it's 4th season. i think network didn't promote it right , if not heavy at all. i did't see no social media presence. no ads during other black shows like black-ish, empire , bet awards etc. it was really good show that touch on the topics of today in a humorous , non politcally correct way. transgender issue, blacklivesmatter, guns right, blacks voting for trump, rape and consent, gentrification, surviving mass shooting tragedies, etc. i don't think you're going to get a show like that again for a long time. espcecially on network television. black-ish is holding it down, though i haven't seen most this season episodes. they had some good ones.

The show was ok... Would have kept watching... Although Loretta divine was annoying as hell yelling every damn line. It was along the lines of Roc.

No need to throw shade at Seinfeld for getting ten years. That was a superior show vs most shows then and now... Although it should have ended two years earlier itself.

My thing is how can they complain about the ratings when they only aired the show during the summer with minimal advertising. People aren't watching TV like that during the summertime.

Let's face it. Whites don't watch the show and they are the numbers. Especially that 18 to 49 segment. On a whole they're somewhat prejudice and stay away from Black TV.

I thought the dude that plays the brother was funny. Divine was the worst character. Jarrod is an excellent stand up comedian. Not too funny on this show. Always portrayed as the smartest one. Grier is talented. But my reason for watching...

Shit was too real for tv....there was no cooning so that already lowered the audience...cacs didn't like it and it wasn't a family show. It fell into a market that wasn't big enough.

And I also kind of think Jarrod was done with it. I haven't heard about them selling this to other networks.

Someone is missing it especially after Lil Rel and Tiffany are having great careers right now.

Then they did some dumb shit that first season where they aired like 5 episodes. A lot of stupidity at NBC.

Carmichael show was intelligent & entertaining(from a black perspective) withTiffany and Lil Rel being on the rise it could have caught on.

Seinfeld was pure trash ....watched one episode and didn't smirk, smile or laugh once. It was the Jay Culter of sitcoms

The dad was kinda of coon

Republican voted Trump

The show was good, to me, I hate that they did not give it enough promotion, maybe the 4th season would have been a break out,

They stood by 30 Rock and Friday Night Lights despite those shows having bad ratings but they kept gaining buzz from critics and award nominations. This could've had the same impact.

I love Curb Your Enthusiasm but man I couldn't get with that Seinfeld shit. Never could. NBC prematurely got rid of this show. Especially with Tiffany blowing up from Girls Trip. I would think if some service like Hulu or Amazon or Netflix would be intrigued by this series especially with the actors.
