It’s a situation that’s not going to quell concerns that Irving doesn’t respect Nash in his role. Irving had this to say in the preseason about the rookie head coach he used to play against.
On one hand, it comes off as a nice gesture. On another, it looks like a passive-aggressive way to assert who’s actually in charge of the Nets locker room. Handing out game balls generally falls under the coach’s purview.
The Nets experiment with Durant, Irving and Nash is one of the most compelling storylines of this NBA season. It promises to remain a must-watch.

Kyrie Irving missed the Nets’ 122-109 win Thursday night over the 76ers, with what the team listed as personal reasons. Shortly before tipoff, Nets coach Steve Nash said he had no clue what those reasons were.
Nor did he know afterward, amid reports Irving was upset over Wednesday’s events in Washington and another report, from The Heavy, cited a source close to Irving saying the point guard’s reasoning for not playing was “I just didn’t want to play.”
While Nash admitted after the game that he still hadn’t communicated directly with Irving, he did say he wouldn’t characterize the situation that way.
“I haven’t spoke to him yet,” Nash said. “I can’t really comment because I haven’t spoke to him, and it’s personal reasons. So it has to come from Kyrie. But I don’t believe that to be the case.”
The Nets already were without Kevin Durant due to contact tracing quarantine, though he might return Sunday. But Nash didn’t find out he had lost his other All-Star until 30 minutes before his pregame press conference.

“He texted us before the game, but that’s a personal issue for him. We support him. He’s our brother,” said sixth man Caris LeVert, who stepped into the lineup in Irving’s absence and had 22 points, 10 assists and seven rebounds. “We went out there, and we competed without him. So, like I said, it was a personal issue for him.”
Irving wasn’t expected to join the Nets for their flight Thursday night to Memphis in preparation for Friday’s game against the Grizzlies.

This time, Irving not only was enjoying a hot start to the season, but also was coming off an impressive outing in leading the Nets to a 130-96 rout of the Jazz on Tuesday. Although the Nets followed that up with a convincing win over the Eastern Conference leading Sixers, Irving’s absence does come at an inopportune time.
Yes, if Durant keeps testing negative for COVID-19, he could return to face the Thunder on Sunday, earlier than initially expected.
But Irving came into Thursday sixth in the league in scoring (27.1) and fourth in plus-minus (+94), trailing only Giannis Antetokounmpo, and the 76ers’ duo of Tobias Harris and Joel Embiid.
The loss of Irving — even if temporary — compounds the Nets’ backcourt woes. They already are missing not only Durant but also Tyler Johnson (quarantine) and starting guard Spencer Dinwiddie (right ACL surgery). With Nic Claxton (right knee tendinopathy) and Reggie Perry (left groin soreness) also injured, the Nets had just 11 players Thursday.
They’ll be missing Irving on Friday as well, and it remains to be seen if they get Durant back over the weekend

After losing four of their previous five games the Brooklyn Nets seem to be back on track as they have now won their last two games. The Nets beat the 7-1 Philadelphia 76ers in dominant fashion on Tuesday with a 122-109 victory. Brooklyn sharpshooter Joe Harris led the way for the Nets with 28 points and six three-pointers. Even more impressive than the victory itself might have been the fact that the Nets were without Spencer Dinwiddie, Kevin Durant, and Kyrie Irving while the Sixers had a fully healthy roster.
Kyrie Didn’t Play for Personal Reasons
As Nets fans know Spencer Dinwiddie has been ruled out for the remainder of the season with a partially torn ACL and Kevin Durant will be out until at least next week in compliance with the NBA’s COVID protocols. Kyrie Irving was a surprise late scratch for Thursday’s matchup against the Sixers and had an interesting reason for not playing in the game.
Why didn’t Irving play in Thursday’s game against Philadelphia? We’ll he just did not feel like it a source close to the situation told Heavy’s Brandon ‘Scoop B’ Robinson. Scoop B also clarified that it was less about Irving not wanting to play in the game and more about Irving taking some personal time to preserve his mental health. Robinson also cites how Irving took a personal day after the tragic death of Hall of Famer Kobe Bryant last year. The two had a remarkably close relationship and Kyrie even has been working on music in which he mentions Bryant and his daughter Gianna who also died tragically in a helicopter crash last year.
The NBA Has Gotten Serious About Mental Health
The NBA has been a major supporter of mental health amongst players. In 2018 the National Basketball Player’s Association launched a mental health and wellness program to provide players with access to mental health counselors. Also, the National Basketball Association has mandated its Rookie Transition Program to put greater emphasis on mental health education as well as updated its mental health policies to complement the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic. “Given the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, taking care of one’s mental health and having access to resources are important aspects of managing the feelings of anxiety, uncertainty, and stress that have characterized much of 2020 and will in all likelihood be present during the 2020-21 season,” the league wrote in a memo obtained by The Associated Press.
Irving and The Nets Are Playing The Long Game
Irving is also coming off major off-season shoulder surgery and Nets coach Steve Nash has the task of load managing him. Irving has already sat the second half of a back-to-back once this season due to rest. Tonight’s game against the Sixers was the first half of a back-to-back as the Nets will travel to Memphis tomorrow to take on the Grizzlies.

Both Nash and Irving have harped on the fact that although they are taking things game by game the team is focused on the long haul. Still, Irving being healthy and deciding to not play a national television game may not bode well with the league office. Kyrie and the Nets have already been fined $25k each this year for Irving’s refusal to talk to the media. It will be interesting to see if more fines are forthcoming for his decision to sit out.
