2 weeks later and I finally cried about my dad. Someone posted on threads the clip I posted above about Will Smith's dad on that episode of fresh Prince. He said simply: "Uncle Phil was was a better dad then the one I had. This scene hit harder then I would ever admit. "

My dad passed away on May 9th. Unfortunately, he was a combination of Ike Turner and Mister from The Color Purple. I didn't mourn or cry. I did cry when I saw this scene years ago, because for years I wondered why my dad didn't want me. I wish I had an Uncle Phil (and now, I'm crying, so thanks)

I'm good. I am. I am successful, with more success on the horizon. I had to learn not to be the asshole he was, and seeing it and beating the struggle to keep from becoming it made me the man that I am.

It took a while, and it took a lot of losses, but I'm better off for it. I'm a better man, a better friend, and though I don't have any kids yet, nor do I know if I'll ever have them, but I'll be a better father because of it.

Without bad examples, we won't be able to fully appreciate the great ones. The great guys who stand up to be fathers of kids that are theirs and the ones who aren't. The uncles who step up, all that.

I have no misgivings on my time on this earth, be it long or short. But I know I'll be missed. But I can't say my father has even five people who mourned his passing, and I'm a better man than that by far, so I'm thankful for the example I got. Thanks to Uncle Phil and Dr Heathcliff Huxtable for your examples of great dads

Sometimes I feel that parents who were treated poorly don't realize how they are passing those same traits down.

As great as I thought my mom was, I didn't realize that I was missing something until we were stationed in Europe and each time we hung up with my then mother in law, she would say she loved us, and my mom never said that. So one day when my mom called, I told her his mom said I love you each time, and my mom said so coldly, "that's his mom and not what I choose to do". It literally made me look at her so different, but I knew when I had kids I wouldn't leave my kids guessing or looking for it from anyone else.

Years later I told her what she said and she didn't remember it, but she said she didn't grow up hearing it and didn't feel like she was missing anything, but my dad's family said it as well. She's better now, but the more I got to know about her upbringing, the more I understood why she was like she was.

Man, I actually appreciate this post. I’m dealing with some shit with my strange brother who is also dying and I’ve been struggling for the past few weeks to deal with communicating with him. I cut him off because I realized he was toxic. I’ve been struggling with the dichotomy of trying to make peace, but not actually giving a fuck at the same time. I don’t hate him; I’m just indifferent about him. Sometimes I wish he was healthy so we could run the fade. My kids don’t even know that I have a brother. Family is weird
