Music Legal: Ed Sheeran Sued for Copying Marvin Gaye - ‘Let’s Get It On’

Musician here too. Well over 40 years experience playing professionally. No one said the chord progression wasn't the same. The melody isn't. Nor are the lyrics. Only a section of the song has the same chord progression. Did you listen to the rest of it? It's not enough for a lawsuit in my opinion. The Gaye family are getting quite good at suing (and winning) bullshit cases and being awarded money they didn't fucking earn! So what Pharrell said they were going for the 'vibe'. Only the beat was similar. THAT'S IT. NOTHING ELSE. Not even a sample. I can read music and sight read music extremely well. Both songs were transcribed and were proven to not be the same and the jury ignored it. Are you aware of how many songs share similar chord progressions? Millions! Are we now gonna see folks suing just because "It Sounds Similar"?? This whole thing is BS. Fuck the Gaye family. I have zero respect for them. Thieves!

I feel the same way ,the main part of thevents song has th3 same chord progression but the prehook is different and the tail end of the hook is different ("we found love" ironically that borrows from van Morrison "crazy love" ) now that groove is so similar we can't deny it ,DO I think they deserve dough? NO!! Cos as we agree ,the melody is different, the lyrics and feel of the vocal melody is different but like John Mayers "waitin on the world to change " versus tye curtis Mayfield joint .. it's just slippery and scary but also some.of it is just blatant theft

But the thing is, last time I looked you can't copyright chord progressions. Off top, I can think of a few standard progressions where a single chord progression is the basis for dozens of popular songs. So this definitely isn't an open and shut case.

In fairness, I think "Blurred Lines" was a rip - and not the first rip by Pharrell. That Negro said the song was "written" in 20 minutes. Duh! You just took "Got to Give it Up" - its arrangement and changed a couple notes, then called it a new song!
Yep!! Just like "Circle of fifths " progression!! (My music heads kniw this progressioj y heart!) Whoever first recorded would be a BILLIONAIRE!!! lol!!

Peace Brotha DWBass. Good to see you here family.
Lifelong singer here...guitar, keys, bass, percussion, composition, production et al
I always felt that seven consecutive note rule was inadequate and flawed. Basically it means one could copy someone's song almost verbatim - just make sure that no seven notes repeat another song's seven notes. Not cool. The Pharrell/Gaye family case took this under consideration and brought other elements into play - such as uniquely expressed motifs.

Now this current case, I'm on the fence about. To my ears, it's not as clear of a rip to me as "Blurred Lines" (which on first listen I thought was a sample of "Got to Give It Up").

There is such a thing as a "standard chord progression", as you know. That should be considered. Other than that, the way the end of the verse sets up the chorus is similar. I can't call this one.

That's where I stand too...cos if that's the case then "circle of 5ths" original recording /composer could sue for a BILLION DOLLARS!! i think he just used that chord progression which isn't that unique anyway ,it's just like the "stand by me" chord progression too atleast 2 dozen hits could be sued from that ...

I hear what they talking about at 1:20 BUT geez what a stretch.
This is reaching far. That da dum in the background must be in every Casio keyboard ever made

Sheeran did this to himself..... there are numerous videos of him playing / singing LGIO blended and interpolated into "Thinking Out Loud" .... dude basically told the world, "look how they are so damn similar, while I cash this check" ....

LGIO starts around 4:30

he plays the same damn chords at the same damn beat/pace/rhythm on the guitar while singing both songs....

What instrument(s) do you play?

It's always easy for some no talent mutha fucka to stand on the sideline and give an opinion about factual things. Most songwriters don't borrow ideas from other songs, they are inspired by original ideas.
No songwriter wants to be known as a fucking thief and for the record this song is a blatant unapologetic Rip Off! Fuck this cac ass bum. Maybe if some of these Hacks took a course in COMPOSITION or
ARRANGING some music of substance would come from these no talent fuckas but this is what young people are stuck with Hot Garbage!

That Pharrell case will be overturned. It's the biggest court fuck up in music in a long time. I think the Gaye estate about to take an L on this new one just based on the LED Zeppelin Spirit lawsuit.

Turns out the chord progression in question is centuries old. I am sure the same thing applies here there will be numerous forgotten songs brought to light that use the same or similar chord progression. In the long run the Gaye estate will get nothing. The corporate music industry will not let this sound a like BS ruin a good thing. You would never be able to make a pop music album again. Just think of all the Blues songs alone. Blues is basically 3 chords that comprise thousands of songs. So many that sound the same.

Here is an interview from 60s music icon Donovan it's an hour but he has some interesting stories about the music busines the history music in general.

I loved this song when I first heard it... Then I heard about the lawsuit and I was like... Hell no.... Turned on let's get it on and I was like ohhhh shit... Yeah, he needs to pay up... Meanwhile, my baby Tori Kelly covered his shit and did it better.

Ed Sheeran announces hiatus from music amid legal woes
ed_sheeran.jpg

Radio’s favorite redhead is stepping down.

Ed Sheeran announced to his audience Tuesday at Chantry Park in Ipswich, England, that he would be taking a break from music after two years of touring. The 28-year-old wrapped up his 260th show with his song “You Need Me, I Don’t Need You.” Maybe so, but with 9 million people attending his “Divide” tour, and his fourth album, “No. 6 Collaborations Project,” debuting at No. 1 in 12 countries, melancholy-pop fans definitely need him.

“There is something very bittersweet about it. I love that you guys are here and we are ending it in Ipswich. This is my last gig for probably 18 months,” said the “A Team” singer, who will be dealing with legal battles over his music in the coming months.

The surprise news comes about two weeks before his scheduled court date over allegations that he ripped off Marvin Gaye’s 1973 hit “Let’s Get It On” on his 2014 track “Thinking Out Loud.” Structured Asset Sales, which owns partial copyrights to Gaye’s music (James Brown and David Bowie are among its other clients), is suing Sheeran for $100 million.

What’s more, the pop god has been blocked from receiving royalties for his blockbuster “Shape of You” after accusations from musician Sam Chokri that he appropriated the music. Chokri claims the catchy chorus is actually lifted from his song “Oh Why,” from 2015, a song he sent to Sheeran’s team in a bid to work with the superstar. The High Court of England is expected to hear the case in 2020.

In addition to fellow artists, Sheeran has also angered neighbors over a massive pond he built on his English estate that he got permits for based on its use as “wildlife preservation . . . providing a natural habitat for breeding and wetland invertebrates such as dragonflies and water beetles.” Locals say it’s a swimming pool, and that it supports nothing but the star’s own “wild lifestyle.”

Beyond the water feature, which has since been blocked from neighbors’ sights with 8-foot bales of hay, Sheeran’s Framlingham property features an on-site pub, a recording studio and a four-room treehouse. He shares the property with wife Cherry Seaborn, a 27-year-old accountant. The duo, who have known each other since childhood and were married last December, plan to enjoy the spoils of the highest-grossing tour of all time, $736.7 million according to Pollstar, on their sprawling estate. Sheeran said on his YouTube channel in June, “I’ve already achieved more than I thought I would, so now I’m just trying to have fun.”

The singer-songwriter joins fellow UK artist Adele in the breather, who canceled two shows in July 2017 due to vocal cord damage and hasn’t performed since. Still, Adele hinted to fans that she’s working on new music in an Instagram post celebrating her 31st birthday.

Sheeran, too, may soon be back in the spotlight. “See you in a few years’ time,” he said to the British crowd. Just as long he gets out of court.

they just tied that in
he's taking a break cause he deserves one. 260 shows over 2 years around the world singing?
he better take a break.

Ed Sheeran Will Break U2’s Record for Highest Grossing Tour Ever Tonight
With lower ticket prices, Sheeran had to stay on tour for two and a half years to surpass U2 by grossing $736.7 million.

Ed Sheeran will officially set the record for having the highest grossing tour of all time Friday night, as the 246th show of his Divide Tour pushes it to the $736.7 million mark, according to Pollstar’s calculations.

The benchmark had previously been set by U2 in 2011, when their 360 Tour grossed $735.4 million, a seemingly insurmountable figure.

There are some market differences between Sheeran’s and U2’s record-breaking tours. Theirs ran only 110 shows, whereas Sheeran will have played 255 gigs over a course of two and a half years by the time he wraps it up with a four-night stand close to home in Ipswich, England Aug. 23-26. Needless to say, perhaps, Sheeran’s ticket prices have been lower, hence the very long run needed to catch up with U2’s high-water mark.

In terms of actual tour attendance, Sheeran already broke that record of U2’s back on May 24, when their 7.3 million tickets sold was beaten by his 7,315,970, Pollstar reports. As of tonight’s show in Hannover, Germany, he’ll be up to an astonishing 8,504,493 attendees for the Divide Tour.

“I just found out the Divide Tour is set to be the highest-grossing tour of all time — this is amazing,” Sheeran said in a statement. “I feel very lucky to have experienced all of the wonderful countries and crowds over the past two and a half years. Thank you to the fans and everyone who made it possible.”

Pollstar reports that Sheeran’s tour had an average $86.75 ticket price, a fairly reasonable figure by today’s standards that contributed to his ability to sell out shows at 166 venues in 43 countries. The tour played both arenas and stadiums, with an average 34,541 paying customers per gig, according to the touring trade publication.

“I thought we might have a shot at having the highest attendance record, but not the highest grossing tour,” said Sheeran’s manager, Stuart Camp.

“In all my years covering the business, it’s amazing to see an artist like Sheeran, at the age of 28, create a new touring paradigm and achieve a touring record that may not be broken in this lifetime,” said Ray Waddell, president of OVG’s Media & Conferences, parent company for Pollstar. “And he still has a lot more to do.”

Let's see what Wiley sounds like and we will go from there. :dunno:

I find it hard to critique cause that UK grime rap is a strong movement and YES Drake DID try to jump on..

but that ENTIRE genre BENEFITED greatly form it cause that exposure helped a lot of artists we would have not known in the States.

and apparently Wiley is a big figure in THAT world.

He sound OK to me.

I'm not a Rap aficionado, but it seems that Drake is always trying to borrow from other rappers. xxxtentacion accused Drake of borrowing/stealing his style in one of his songs.

What is the name of the Drake song?
