Trump says non-US movies to be hit with 100% tariffs

He blamed a "concerted effort" by other countries that offer incentives to attract filmmakers and studios, which he described as a "National Security threat". Good luck with that, Chump.

Gladiator
2000

5.5/10

Me and my sons watched this one last month on Paramount+. I thought I had written a review earlier, but it looks like I forgot too.

I had seen it on HBO back in the 2000s, back when HBO had exclusive rights to debut new films on Saturday night.

I had forgotten what the film was about, MAX recently got the sequel, so I decided to rewatch it with my sons.

Not much to say. The premise wasn’t original and the film was very predictable as it played out.

VFX/SFX looks dated when watching it today. It doesn’t hold up to what we are used to seeing nowadays.

It falls in the category of “Watched it, No interest in watching it again”.

Synopsis

Russell Crowe portrays Maximus Decimus Meridius, a Roman general who is betrayed when Commodus, the ambitious son of Emperor Marcus Aurelius, murders his father and seizes the throne. Reduced to slavery, Maximus becomes a gladiator and rises through the ranks of the arena, determined to avenge the murders of his family and the emperor.

Gladiator II
2024

5.5/10

Me and my sons watched this flick last week when I was home on Paramount+.

The film takes place about 20+ years after the events of the first film. The film is focused on Maximus son.

Nothing original with the premise, it’s been done plenty of times.

VFX/SFX look decent.

There was a lot buzz last year when the trailer debuted depicting Denzel Washington dialect sounding like he was “Back on the Block”. When watching the film, his dialect wasn’t bad compared to all the other actors in the film who were speaking in their native dialects.

For the Gay Agenda trackers, Denzel’s character is bi-sexual, nothing is shown. One of the Emperors is gay and has a harem of gay slaves. Nothing is shown.

A couple of characters from the first film return.

Overall, it’s an entertaining film, better than the first. It too falls in the category of “Seen it Once, No interest in seeing it again”.

Synopsis

Years after witnessing the death of Maximus at the hands of his uncle, Lucius must enter the Colosseum after the powerful emperors of Rome conquer his home. With rage in his heart and the future of the empire at stake, he looks to the past to find the strength and honor needed to return the glory of Rome to its people.

Thunderbolts*

PRAISE: No Avengers,No Defenders,The West Coast Avengers are barely a thought at this time. So who can the world depend on to stop an unstoppable menace. The Thunderbolts*
made up of anti heroes with a capital A. Yelena Belova, Bucky Barnes, Red Guardian, Ghost, Taskmaster and John Walker either dealing with their own personal problems or new lanes in life are at times able to capture that great rhythm of the former Avengers and Avengers films of the past. Dealing with personal trauma and wounded psyches and blended with action is when the movie started to become effective for me. As Yelena Florence Pugh stands out the most. Shes dealing with anguish but she still has a soft spot to do the right thing.I thought some interesting things were done with the specific powers of one of the characters. Also some terrific visuals were attached to a character. I did have questions about how certain story threads would be resolved and I did enjoy the resolution for most of them.

PROBLEMS: I had hoped the movie would dive more into a characters psyche because I really wanted to see the character shaken up more. I wish the movie had completely committed to its dark moments. I definitely had some unintentional laughs especially at the first appearance of a character which reminded me of a cheesy 1987 super heroe movie. A few dull let's get it on with it moments pop up here and there.

Scale of 1 to 10 a 7½

Babygirl
2024

5.5/10

I watched this last night on MAX at home.

The premise is similar to the cult classic “Secretary”, the difference is the roles are reversed.

Sexual depictions are not graphic, but filmed in a way where you get the point of what’s going on.

For the Thirsty, Nicole Kidman has some semi-nude scenes showing her full body. She is still holding up after squirting out Tom Cruise’s kids.

It’s an interesting film, nothing spectacular. If your girl isn’t hung up about sexual depictions in film, it’s a decent film to watch with her.

Synopsis

A high-powered CEO puts her career and family on the line when she begins a torrid affair with her much younger intern.

The Prestige
2006

8.5/10

This cult classic popped up in my recommendations after watching “Grotesque” last month on Hulu. I watched it last night on the road on Hulu.

I had last seen it back in the 2000s on HBO, back when HBO had the exclusive to premiere new films on TV before everyone else.

The film is a classic due to the large number of twists throughout the film from the opening to last scene. Just when you think you got shit figured out, it throws something else out at you. I’m not going to go into it cuz there really isn’t any way to talk about the film without spoiling it, for those who have not seen it.

It has an all-Star cast of well known recognizable actors.

If you have never seen this flick, I definitely recommend it, you will not be disappointed.

Synopsis

Period thriller set in Edwardian London where two rival magicians, partners until the tragic death of an assistant during a show, feud bitterly after one of them performs the ultimate magic trick - teleportation. His rival tries desperately to uncover the secret of his routine, experimenting with dangerous new science as his quest takes him to the brink of insanity and jeopardises the lives of everyone around the pair.

In the Lost Lands

I knew I was in for a so bad its almost good and kind of watchable time when the actions that took place in the first 5 minutes of this flick didn't make any sense. There's tons of bad dialogue and the delivery of the dialogue is just as worse. The stars of the flick David Bautista and Mila Jojovich amazingly keep straight faces throughout this flick based in a post apocalyptic world.Amara Okereke provides some nice eye candy as Queen Melange. A lot of the kills were pretty good and elaborate and the same goes for the action sequences. Some of the CGI and set designs were on point, actually reminded me of the animated He-Man and The Masters of the Universe series. I laughed at the multiple times the characters kept hitting the sheets with multiple people. The flick is such a grab bag of genres jammed together it was laughable and drawn out for no reason.

After watching “The Prestige” on Hulu, I scrolled thru the recommendations listed and this flick was there.

I never heard of it and the trailer looked interesting. I watched it last night on the road on Hulu.

It’s an action/thriller based on legendary novel writer Tom Clancy.

I have never read the book, so I went into it blind. I’m not sure if this film follows the book closely or they decided to go “Hollywood” with it. Nothing original with the premise being it’s been done a number of times in various genres thru the years.

Action is pretty standard, nothing spectacular.

What I did find interesting was during the opening credits, “Amazon” popped up. I thought it was odd bring Amazon, Disney and Netflix keep their content locked down on their own streaming services and do not release it anywhere else. But while watching the movie, it slowly struck me that this film could be an origin film for the MCU character “WarMonger” that debuted in “The Black Panther”. It wouldn’t surprise me if that’s the reason Disney managed to get their greedy paws onto this film. Unfortunately the timeline and events of this film do not match up with the MCU character.

I looked it up and the film was put out by Paramount and was scheduled for a theatrical release, but for whatever reason they released it to Amazon, so that’s why Amazon is credited in the title.

I also looked into it and Paramount plans on making a franchise with this film starring Michael B. Jordan in the lead following Tom Clancy’s novels. The next film in development is “Rainbow 6”. No date yet on scheduled release.

There is a mid-credit scene at the end.

Synopsis

Seeking justice for the murder of his pregnant wife, an elite Navy SEAL uncovers a covert plot that threatens to engulf the United States and Russia in an all-out war.

Train To Busan
2016

8.5/10

If you like the 28 Days movies, you will like this one.

The movie is Korean made and has subtitles. The first 20min they are annoying but you will get used to it and they will not disturb the flow of the movie after that.

The action starts after 20min and continues to the very end.

Train To Busan

I had watched this film back in 2017 on Netflix when I gave this review.

Last week in my Google recommendations a story randomly popped up about this film being part of a franchise. So I looked it up and discovered that there are two other films that came out and there are plans for 3 more with the first scheduled to debut soon.

The films in order that are out are…

• Train To Busan (2016)
• Seoul Station (2016)
• Train To Busan Presents: Peninsula

The 4th upcoming film is titled “Last Train To New York”. No release time as of now.

And there are two more films after. No information on them at this time.

So, I rewatched “Train To Busan” last night as a refresher. I’m gonna try to watch “Seoul Station” tonight. It’s currently on tubi.

I will give my review after watching it.
