Mount Rushmore of NYC rappers

Good point, but I'm thinking the list creator was using NYC loosely, cause DMX is on it, buy he's mt. Vernon/Yonkers, not NYC.

.

Oh, wait a minute - NYC. So Chuck (GOAT) and Rakim are technically out since they're from LI.

So, LL; Kane; I can put Ultra as one entry; and maybe Hov.

I'm tempted to put Pu or Kool G in there but I can't really say they changed Rap the way the others did. They just had crazy flow.

Mo Dee dropped five solo album plus two albums when he was in the Treacherous Three...

Hell,Mo See influenced Rakim and LL and pioneered the fast flow when he was in Treacherous Three.
I know. But standing next to Nas and Jay, think about that.

Fab alone would rap circles around everyone you named.
I love everyone you named, but let’s be realistic here.
And Fab has the same problem that Ludacris had. He can rap his ass off but his albums are basically the same and none of his albums(not mixtapes) have even come close to being a classic. And to say that he'd rap circles around them is crazy.

None of the dudes you named have classic albums either.

And Grandmaster Cas wrote 1/3 the first 3 rap hits. When people see "Mt. Rushmore ", they think it means "best", and it's not about that. It's about what you did, and what did it help establish. Using that criteria:

Cas/ Sugarhill
Melle Mel / Duke Bootie
Kurtis Blow
Funky 4 + 1

Naw I get it. I get why LL should be there. I get why RAkim should be there.

But if i'm going my top 4....it gotta be BIG, Jay, Nas and X. But maybe i'm biased because 90's hip hop especially late 90's birthed me. And i'm in my 30's now and that's 30 years of listening to those guys. Kane, KRS and Kim before my time....

I guess its one of those things where everyone gonna have a different opinion. Someone 25 would probably say 50 Cent, Cam, Jay or some shit. Someone 55 would probably have LL, Kane, Kim in there.

BIG to me is the most important. I get the argument but BIG for me is the most gifted rapper to come out of New York. He could've made it in any era. He would be relevent now. HE would be relevent in 1984....it didn't matter.

Mo dee cant even fuck with prodigy

This makes more sense.

Actually, after having this conversation with a few friends of mine, I see things a little differently now:

Russell Simmons
Sylvia Robinson
Rick Rubin
Grandmaster Flash

If you are going by what Mt. Rushmore represents, which is American ideals...then those four should be the rap version of that.

No Rush or Rick, no Def Jam, no major label pushing out hip-hop
No Sylvia Robinson, no Sugarhill Records, no Sugarhill Gang making hip-hop famous
No Grandmaster Flash, no turntablism.

Every Fab album is better than both of those.
Nostalgia got you dudes blinded
I swear sometimes people just say shit to say shit. Those albums have survived the test of time and they have nostalgia behind them for said reason.
But go ahead and listen to Throw it in the Bag and reminisce like it's the 1st time since Fab's stuff is so great

Nigga tried hard to name one wack song by Fab. And even that shit has better wordplay than any of that bullshit from the damn 80s. FOH

Just bullshit.

No Heavy D, Special Ed. When did Run have a solo career.

And you got Ice Spice and Cardi on this list?

The fact that Jay-Z is number 1 on every list shows that this is nothing but a popularity contest.
