I feel ya, though. When I first started doing it, I let my pants go until they completely hit the floor (I was a jackass), picked up and started over. But I always had shorts, not boxers but athletic shorts, underneath. And yeah, we used to rock long polo shirts. I don't understand it now.
In this particular case, I think the airline was right because they have rules and he didn't follow them. I would only be upset if this was one of those times when some local politician was trying to pass a law. That shit is going too far.
