Mos Def on Drake: “It’s……‘mall’……music”

No we don't want or expect artists genuine opinion when being interviewed because it'll be nothing but artists shitting on each other.

I know the difference between hating and an honest opinion.

But if 10's of millions of people have liked his music, made him one of the most popular artists ever.

Are we to believe that those 10's millions of people that he makes good music or the few who have nothing positive to say?

Awww damn it

Smart redline has begun the intellectual discourse on the socio psychology effects of popular culture on current acceptance societal norms and mores as related to modern social media.

Nobody riding around blasting Black Thought but it doesn't mean he's not elite at what he does and have the right to his opinion, especially when asked (we keep leaving out how Mos was ASKED his thoughts). Record sales and singles success are important but they don't make your opinion more or less valid. If that's the case Vanilla Ice should speak and Kool G Rap should never voice his opinion if asked.

I purposely said the hood line because that's the first regurgitated line that people say when speaking about Eminem

True....

But I believe that sales do matter. Because it represents a fan base an audience a reach an effect and an influence corporately and socially and culturally.

It is NOT the definitive factor but it is relevant and significant.

10s of millions like Taylor Swift too, but when Aretha Franklin was asked about her the only positive things she could muster was, "Nice gowns." Taylor has outsold Aretha by 125 million records. I think we'd say Aretha is still allowed her opinion, especially when ASKED.

Hip hop has ALWAYS been competitive. My DJ is better than yours. I rock a party better than you. My dance crew... My tag crew... better than you and yours. This PC shit is relatively new and honestly, it's what makes things stagnant in the culture. Mos doesn't have a known history of just hating to hate. In fact he tends ot show other lyricists hella love. If shawty didn't ask his opinion, he would've never mentioned Drake's name. For the record, the host agreed with his opinion. She's a hater too I suppose.

Some emcees should be able to voice an honest opinion without it being "hate." Mos is a lyricist, so that's what he focuses on.

Also, considering how loosely we throw around the term "hater," I guess we'd have to call this hating too, right?

You posted what Drake said about Mos, and Mos most definitely saw it.

So there's a little more than him simply giving an opinion on a fellow rapper.

There's history.

I was at a restaurant in San Francisco about 15 years ago called Farmer Brown’s, Mos Def was in there. A friend of ours was a waitress. Mos Def was trying his hardest to get her back to his hotel room just being sleazy and foul. He’s a piece of shit

Man I loved Farmer Browns, I was sick when they closed up shop. Sunday all you can eat brunch and bottomless mimosas was the shit. Pussy everywhere. Tenderloin took out another great spot, they are in the airport now.

Well played good sir. You're a gentleman and a scholar.

Sidenote, Nacho Libre is one of my guilty pleasure movies. I laugh my ass off everytime I see that awkward smile gif

:roflmao3:

That's all some people want to do.
I don't listen to Drake. Not my era; not my genre, not my cup of tea.
I've been on-site at a show or two, though.
His shows sell out because people like his form of escapism.
Whether they are delivering "real hip-hop" or "music for bitches", at the end of the day, they are all just entertainers.
Rappers get real self-righteous and forget that when a pandemic breaks out, all of them are out of work.
Yep
This is a bunch of hate from Mos. He’s entitled to his opinion like everyone else though

People for whatever reason hate on anyone that’s successful….

Dude been killing it for over a decade and it burns people up. He found his lane and stayed in it….
Salut to that bruh…

What other genre of music do the artists argue and fight each other like rap/hip hop?

This was a set up. The intent of asking a backpack rapper about Drake is to elicit criticism. Backpack rappers are notorious for being frustrated by not having the financial success and attention that is enjoyed by artists that they feel have inferior artistic talent and skills. Drake is an obvious example of a rapper that a backpack rapper would likely dislike.
