Michelle Obama to Become Honorary AKA!

A great woman from an even greater school married to a great man.

No offense to any AKA's (my favs), but Michelle seems more of a Delta woman.

:smh: that makes no sense. I don't agree with her accepting the membership. She just lost a point in my book. I would prefer her to stay neutral, apart from organizations such as this.

Why? It is the oldest black sorority.......
I mean the Obama's were members of a certain religion...which is an organization..right?

Most leaders have memberships in organizations.
G.W. Bush is a frat member of Delta Kappa Epsilon
Bill Clinton was a member of Kappa Kappa Psi band fraternity
Martin Luther King Jr. was a member of Alpha Phi Alpha
Tom Bradley Former Mayor of LA is frat member of Kappa Alpha Psi

Whats the problem?

It's really not that serious.
Anyways, her husband is running for president, not her. Why does it matter?

she always wanted to be an aka she could probably never afford it as an undergrad. she probably lost interest as a grad student so now she becomes an honorary member. It happens all the time to famous people.

Like one of the notorious members of BGOL said... I don't concern myself with white people just members of my own race.

In addition I didnt condone everyone else taking part in fraternities/ sororities either. For the common/ average person its a choice *shrugs* so be it.

However, when you are running to become president/first lady in a tight race you cant afford to enroll yourself into organizations like the AKA's especially during the middle of the race. She could of kept her point had she done it during the 2nd term when it didnt matter. Especially a group like the AKA's with a history of paper bagging broads... yes Michelle is dark... so what. It is what it is... and 90% of the AKA's I see to this day are light skinned

It's really not that serious.
Anyways, her husband is running for president, not her. Why does it matter?

In any event blacks are so segregated as it is, we need to be one unified force! I have never agreed with the frat system.

Lastly@ Princess C....

husband + wife= one unified force...

just my 2 cents...

All dem peeples bin pledged while de wuz goins to school. It not be a prolum dat you be in a fahternitee or a sworowity, ifens you a part o' dat organism from de beginnins. But to be 'ceeptin a membership as de nex pres-o-dent wife, well, les jus say she dont be needins to show any impart...impar....impar, aw fuck it, favortisms.

she always wanted to be an aka she could probably never afford it as an undergrad. she probably lost interest as a grad student so now she becomes an honorary member. It happens all the time to famous people.

I hears on good ear dat dere aints no sworowitys at her school, ifens she be interested, she coulda made a chapter at her school. I would say dat I be bettins dat she didnt go seekins dis a-koolaid, dey prolly suggested it to her. One mo' 'gin, she really dont needs to be showin favotisms.

It's really not that serious.

It really aint dat serious, but dat don stop nobody from spressin dey oponion.

How many black women were at Princeton when she was there?

(Getting honorarily enrolled in a sorority is just a nice gesture of recognition and support. Just like getting an honorary degree or a "key to the city." It's not that serious.)

So you have made up your mind as to what organizations that Michelle should accept an award from. I guess you have your mind up as to what religion and denomination they should be too.

To me it just sounds like you bitter cuz you couldn't get down with the A.K.A's yourself.

Really this is not that big a deal.....
Plus don't you know that this is still politics. There are about 200,000 A.K.A women voters. Why the HELL WOULD MICHELLE not want this large group of black females to support her?

I mean a longstanding well respected black women's organization decides to honor Michelle Obama..........and your hating? For What?

You dont be needins them ad hologram....homophobe.....homo...aw fuck it, you don needs to be talkin shit 'bout someone cuz you dont 'spect dey oponion. Der may be 200,000 akas, but der be a lot of...well, I cant 'member dem other group names, but der be a lot of dem too. Why you wanna be riskin alienationing them? Dis be somethin that coulda been don laters on, but to me, and dats jus to me, I aints no smart cookie, its be seeming like dem AKAs jus wanna say we gots the first black pres-o-dent wife wearin de stink and mean. Aint nobody be hatin, she have da right to a oponion jus like e'erbody else. You be takin dis shit real serious, is you a miAKA??

Come on now...90%??? That's reaching. Why have you never agreed with it?

Me personally, to each his own...but they have outlived their usefulness...just a status symbol to status concsious kneegrows. :(

Day be like de mos' reasonbule thang you don said. Mebba dere be hopes fa ya afteralls.

No, I am dead serious 90% I've seen are light skin. Are you seriously gonna say that the majority of them are dark skinned? lolll

smh... what I hate about black people today is that we cant hold a conversation without someone getting frustrated/ lazy and resting on the word "hater". If I wanna go out and do charity work, ill do it. If I wanna belong to a group I have my family.

As I stated before I have never agreed with the Frat system.. meaning ALL FRATS... not just the AKAs. I have already stated why. If you wanna be apart of it so be it...

Lastly being apart of a religion and being apart of a frat group is two different things. She didnt come into the race and decide to be a Christian. :smh: smh this probably going over your head... nevermind.

Lets just leave it at I don't agree with her choice.

Black sororities all have principles that they live by, INCLUDING community service, scholarship, etc. Organizations change over the years, so it's wrong to stereotype something that you really know nothing about. If you're not a member you can not understand and know what the AKAs or any one else stand for. If you chose not to join, that's on you but don't try to make Michelle out to be an opportunist. I guess she shouldn't accept an honorary degree either?

This viewpoint is misinformed. Unfortunately, Deltas, AKAs, HBCUs and other black organizations used the brown paper bag test. It is a sad part of our history and not exclusive to any one group. All of the Divine 9 have members of all different colors. No group has 90% of anything. Rather, seeing groups of Deltas, AKAs, Kappas or Ques will show our rainbow, from the lightest to the darkest. Also, if you look at pictures of privileged blacks from that era, they barely look black. This speaks to the racism in America.

Fraternities and sororities do not divide black people. It's troubling how membership in a group can do this. All of our organizations are working toward a common goal. The fact is that more is done with large groups of people.

Well, I'm glad Michelle will be my Soror and look forward to how she will work together with all of the Divine 9.

Since you have all the statistics on the skin tone front. What's the percentage of light-skinned vs, dark-skinned black women who attend college? Odds are that light-skinned dominate in the upper echelons of education, right? Or is that TOO broad a generalization?????

AKA's are lame.

(notice the phonetic ressemblance to "CAC's")

Yeah, I said it.

Who wants some?! Whut. :hmm:

As I stated before I have never agreed with the Frat system.. meaning ALL FRATS... not just the AKAs. I have already stated why. If you wanna be apart of it so be it...

As I stated above, it's not about majority anything; all of the organizations are a mix of black people all colors. It's obvious you've never been around any greeks organization, cuz if you were, you would see 90% is utterly ridiculous.

A FRATERNITY is an organization that is ONLY men and a SORORITY is an organization that is ONLY women. I suppose it's hard to have a convo about this with someone who refers to AKA as a frat :smh:

Close thread.

Opportunist?! Where did I say she was an opportunist? I don't recall saying anything remotely like that.

Umm this response is kinda all over the place... you said I was misinformed then you repeated what I said?! In any event as I stated before I don't agree witht he whole frat system... I did not say that all frats an sorities are 90% lightskin. Regardless if AKA did that or not I still wouldnt agree with it. *shrugs* maybe I am just reading you wrong.

Since you have all the statistics on the skin tone front. What's the percentage of light-skinned vs, dark-skinned black women who attend college? Odds are that light-skinned dominate in the upper echelons of education, right? Or is that TOO broad a generalization?????

Blunt stop reading with emotion sheesh.

I never said it was fact that 90% were lightskined... I simply stated that 90% of the AkA's I have seen are lightskin.... and I am not the only one who says this. *shrugs* if yall wanna front like AKA's are 90% dark skin then so be it.

AKA's are lame.

Yeah, I said it.

why do you feel they are lame?

I didn't refer to all frats/greek organization/cults or whatever you prefer to be classified as, as being color struck. I specifically mentioned AKAs when I refered to the lightskined/dark skin reference.

Lastly I have mentioned twice before that I have never been a agreed with the frat system... meaning I am not involved, not a member, never would consider it. Now why you feel hard to have a convo with me is beyond me...

If you're not a member you can not understand and know what the AKAs or any one else stand for.

And, if you be takin dis dumb logic hurr, ifens you aints a part o' anythang, you cant be complainin'. So if you aint de pres-o-dent, you cant be complain' bout what George Bush be doing. Ifens you aint playin for the Yankess, you cant be complain' bout whut Arod be doins. Ifens you aint in Da Don's fambly, den you don really kno him, right? But you be goins by ya expereiences, right? So why cant Kitty o' anybody else in dis thread?

Right, and maybe that's because light-skinned women are HIGHER achievers, more ambitious, more social and more likely to attend college (and join an elite sorority).

I think that you need to expand your circle. 90% "lightskin"? Thats grossly overstated, and extremely ignorant.

How you gon be discountins somebody else 'xperience? If i be tellin you dat 80% of de black folks at mah college was Afrikkans, would you be callins that "grossly overstated and extremely ignorant"? Dat be her 'xeprience, you cant be disrepeckin dat. Y'all peeples be gettin real uppity tight when somebody say suh'n dat be discouragins to ya group. You be knowins yo group be ok, den why it matter what ova niggas be sayin??

I think that you need to expand your circle. 90% "lightskin"? Thats grossly overstated, and extremely ignorant.

It's ignorant to ASSume my circle is limited to just your block. It's ignorant to call someone a name because they don't agree with your way of thinking.

My family has played a big role in black college life and one of my relatives (part of my circle *winks*) was the former president of one thee most significant Black Colleges around today" and through that as a child on up through early adulthood I've attended more then my fair of black college events. :(

Now, I've dropped that insignificant cred card to let you know I've seen more then enough AKAs in my lifetime.... 90% of them being lighter skinned.

Lastly, before this goes on to a one sided mud slinging match on your end... at the end of the day I still won't agree with frats/soros clubs and Michelle has still lost one of her many points in my book.

Is there anything else to discuss?

interesting turn of the thread...i feel like this:

honestly if michelle is just a tshirt wearer who gives a fuck what she is

and i pretty much feel that way about any honorary member of any org....including mine

whats the point of someone saying they are a member....or even worse an org bragging about someones membership if they only showed up to get pinned

lets see what she does for her org to see if her membership even matters:rolleyes:
