Michelle Obama to Become Honorary AKA!

Dem AKAs treateds YOU bad? But you be lightskinneded?? But you finna have dem AKAs come and call you ig'nant and misinformded cause you had a different 'xperience and it be reflectin badly on day group. Jus' fair warnings.

The part dat be in bold be very important, why NOW, when it be almos a lock dat she gonna be de Missus Pres-o-dent? Nuttin mo' dan a publicity stunt, which be makins me shake my head even mo'.

Was it because I was with my dark skinned friend? :dunno: Was it because her body type did not fit the AKA stereotype? :dunno: All I know is that I try not to feed into the bullshit and stereotypes, (I can go on about OTHER organizations all of whom have members dear to me), until I can experience it for myself but...

blunt,

it's no big secret that aka's at one point required fair skin as a prerequesite for membership. goto any historically black college and ask to see the sorority's photo albums of past alumni going back into the beginning....

...I have personally seen an AKA gathering, (not sure if it was the regional or the national), but the women looked as though they were aged anywhere between 80 to 27 and I was hard pressed to find one person who was Michelle Obama's color. Now I know some today that are, but from a historical viewpoint- that's what I saw.

:dunno:The hype has been on Barack to run for a while, when you consider the word coming from his position as a senator and the hype he got on Colbert Report. I wish someone could find that mag cover because I don't think I was pregnant at the time, (which would have put it 05-06 range), so I know Michelle can hold her own by herself. Which again brings me back to my original question...

but it's all good. I won't lie though the AKA Barbie looks pretty. If proceeds go to charity I wouldn't mind buying one for my friend. Wonder if they will put out one for ***?

That was then and this is now. And, as I said before, light-skinned blacks (particularly in the past) usually had higher levels of achievement and have fit the social qualifications of such elite schools and clubs better than others. Chicken or the egg? That's a whole 'nother topic about why that was so. It's not the group's fault for having a limited sample of elite black "debutantes" to choose from (at least in the past). If all the "qualified" women are light-skinned, whose fault is that? Snobbery in social organizations knows no color.

Michelle Obama is just another example of someone who broke the mold in terms of darker-skinned women acquiring elite qualifications. Her entrance into this group can only help broaden their perspective, if it's still stuck in the past.

I kno whut I be needins from you...I be needins stats, bish.

Mud-slinging?
Chick, calm yourself.
Like I said before, it's just really not that serious.

I really don't care about your "cred", and to be honest, it's not even really that impressive or relevant to this post, but thanks for sharing.
Since you shared your "opinion", I shared mine. You are ignorant and extremely misinformed about an organization you have limited experience with. So I guess you're right...there's nothing else to discuss.

wow... looks like you the one need to calm yourself. I am over here laughing hard at all the responses expecially Leroy's.

an my comment was very revelant to your previous comment:

I think that you need to expand your circle. 90% "lightskin"? Thats grossly overstated, and extremely ignorant.

I didnt throw my cred card out on the table to impress you but to address your ASSumption. Now you ran out of ASSumptions and are going hard mud slinging.

Again, this thread is hilarious. I am wondering how a person can be ignorant and missinformed if they've witnessed something and gave an opinion based on that experience.

*shrugs* I could see if I said: "ALL AKAs are lightskin and recruit the occasional token black girl to prove that they are not color struck and/ or for Publicity"... but I didn't... I just spoke on my experience... not to be confused with a generalization.

Leroy please answer that question since I am too "IGnorant and MISinformed" to figure it out.. *shrugs* then again I don't even care to find out. lolll

/thread TKO 7th round.

I wonder if Michelle will get held underwater at a beach, or thrown in a thorny rose bush, or have her hair pulled out by the roots or have to undertake same-sex sexual "rituals" or mentally degraded or beaten with wooden paddles. But we know that Alpha Kappa Alpha Incorporated does not encourage the use of hazing in the determination of membership into their organization.

my aim is up and running ;)

NEGRO PLZ

SEAN SEAN SEAN SEAN SEAN SEAN....wait...i can't derail the thread

SEAN....how do you feel about Michelle Obama being an honorary AKA?

Answer: CAC move.

Sean...please share with the SOL fam

Already did, gangs like AKA's are lame. In my experience.

Thank you Sean in advance ;)

You're welcome ... Ju.

There.

They offered Hilliary Clinton an honorary membership too and she turned it down. . but would people have been so opposed if she had accepted?

For the record: Hillary Clinton turned down the membership because of the requirement that she accept no other honorary membership from any other Pan-Hellenic (Divine 9) organization.

"Hillary Clinton was one for a bit but then turned it down because their rules would prevent her from joining the other black sororities."

Ive been reading the discussion about lighter skinned blacks being more present in collegiate education. I went to Howard and then law school...I just haven't seen that in my experience at all...

It's there- and not just in Greekdom either. I went to a HBCU and there were more light skinned females than dark skinned females. Just maybe not where your experience was based it wasn't there or as rampant. But it exists, unfortunately.

I don't see it. Where I went to school, it was definitely more darker women than light.

I wonder if they will make Michelle Obama have sex or suck off an Alpha man before she can get inducted.

someone from your city that you prolly know told me about hillary just the other day:lol:

i heard she actually considered it but when she learned she couldnt be a member of all the bglo sororities she said no

extended membership people to her and others that just but thier membership on thier resume its pointless

it makes just about as much sense as a dead person a honorary member:rolleyes:

 I agree.

Who do you know from STL? Just pm me :)

I knew that and it had nothing to do with the point I was making. :smh:

So if they dont:

Hold Michelle underwater at a beach
Throw her into a thorny rose bush
Have her hair pulled out by the roots or
Make her undertake same-sex sexual "rituals"
Mentally degrade her
Beat her with wooden paddles.
Verbally abuse her
Make her lay down on rocks and have the members walk over her
Shave off her eyebrows
Make her eat a whole watermelon
Make her line (well she's the only person in the line) drink bottles of alcohol
Make her not be able to speak to her boyfriend/ other friends

Will they then call her a "Paper" AKA and beat her up, jump her, rip off her letters because she doesn't deserve them because she didn't earn them the "right way"???

But we know that Alpha Kappa Alpha Incorporated does not encourage the use of hazing in the determination of membership into their organization.

I think you have this collegiate organization's rituals confused with Jamie Foxx's parties back in the '90s.

Black sororities all have principles that they live by, INCLUDING community service, scholarship, etc. Organizations change over the years, so it's wrong to stereotype something that you really know nothing about. If you're not a member you can not understand and know what the AKAs or any one else stand for. If you chose not to join, that's on you but don't try to make Michelle out to be an opportunist. I guess she shouldn't accept an honorary degree either?

I'm a member of ZPhiB for over ten years and I never agreed with "Honorary" membership. I remember a few years ago Oprah was offered an Honorary membership and turned it down because she said they was only trying to use her as a recruiting tool to say she was one because she was so famous. She made the statement that "no organization makes a woman, it is the woman that mades the organization". Would Jennifer Hudson have been offered "Honorary" membership if she didn't get an Oscar? Why are they suddenly offering Michelle an Honorary membership, it's not like she doesn't have the money now for Grad Chapter. I struggled through school and paid my dues to support my Org, why should they be able to skate?

You're kidding, right? Why do they hand out "honorary degrees" to famous and accomplished folks every spring? It's a symbolic show of appreciation and respect, and has no REAL value. It's just a gesture that says, "we admire you and/or your achievements." Period. Relax.

Co-sign.

But we aren't talking about honorary degrees, are we? Stay on topic please.

This is what I have been trying to understand for years. I know ZPB isn't the only one to approach Oprah- she seems to have a general dislike for the woman half of the Divine 9 due to her undergrad experience.

On a side note:

No, honorary degrees are not a "symbolic show of appreciation". Sometimes it isn't even out of respect. It's just recognition of someones outstanding work in their field; you're right on the last part. But I wouldn't say it has no real value. People get those things and act as though they wrote the dissertation for it. And the public accepts it. Academically it might not have value, but eventually it does.

And no honorary degrees and honorary membership into a BLGO are not the same thing. The latter SHOULD be decided upon service to the community, not your popularity or status in the spotlight.

the word on the street is oprah tried to pledge delta durring her undergrad but was turned down

im pretty sure shes gotten invitations from every sorority now

back then they didnt want me...now im hot they all on me:lol:
