Melle Mel of the Furious Five explains why he considers 2Pac great and why he doesn't consider Biggie Smalls as a great.

I love Mel but he can really be on some next shit. Big was definitely one of the best and as big of a fan as I am of Pac, I definitely put Big above him. And I believe Pac knew that Big was the better rapper because he started so much shit with the man. Mel is now saying he wants to battle Eminem. Three words: Mel’s Muscles album!

And as far as comparing Pac or Big to the JayZs, Nas, Rakims, etc. is unfair cause of longevity. Pac was only 25 and BIG was only 24. Personally if any one of them were alive (especially Biggie), I highly doubt Jay would be as big as he us today. Just my opnion.

I’m sorry Mel, but BIG did have lyrics that meant something. He talked shit well but some of his lyrics meant something.

“My Mother got cancer in her breast, don’t ask me why I’m muthafuckin stressed”...

“You’re nobody til somebody kills you”...

“Hearing the coach scream at my lifetime dream”...

And of course there’s more.

much much respect to the LEGEND

This is NOT how you move as the ambassador and one of the pillars of the foundation this culture

this is how you got yourself ignored and dismissed.
This is also how some of you NY cats get your feelings hurt. Biggie was nice but he not above 2Pac. If we honest about rap and not just rep our hood then rap will be in a better place.

Why is there always a comment that goes "if such and such rapper was still around, this other great rapper wouldn't have made it"? If you go by that, then there would only be maybe 8 great rappers from 1980 to 2020 if there was only room for say one great rapper every 5 years. To say that there can't be more than one great rapper at a time is not possible is kinda narrow thinking.

Mel said Big was the better rapper but Pac was the greater rapper.

You have to admit that Pac's global impact on the culture exceeds what Big was able to do.

If Big had more time he might have changed that. He really only had 2 albums he was alive for so its almost unfair to judge him.

Both are legends though.

This...

Big was good but Pac made you wanna go draw down on niggas you didn't even have beef with because of his lyrics

Your from Ny or somewhere close, this is not a statement that holds weight outside of emotion
Houston. But I know Mel and he talks a lot. Even some people that worked with Mel will say the same thing. He’s bitter and I get it but don’t shit on other people. He gave RUN DMC and said Public Enemy was garbage back in the day. Now THOSE guys are legends.

You’re absolutely right.

I respect his opinion and he's saying what a lot of OG rappers wouldn't say because of the backlash they would receive.

Could any of them fuck with a Rakim?a whole lot of them couldn't fuck with Heavy D he would dance their asses off the stage(performance probably was crazy),we have to start keeping it honest.

I'll never understand why people say this.

Because the biggest rappers in the game were killed 6 months apart leaving a void, specifically in New York.

BIG to my knowledge was the only NY rapper moving big units on a commercial level and then he was gone.

They feel that was open for the taking and Jay stepped up.

What they fail to realize is that Jay was already bubbling, had an album out with a feature from BIG on it. Had the hit “Ain’t No Nigga” being played like crazy.

So he had a radio hit plus spit street shit. Jay was on his way whether BIG was alive or not.

Dumb ass unoriginal comment

Sorry when I said “Big Units” I was thinking Pac, BIG and Snoop levels.

It Was Written did go double platinum in a couple of months so yes that counts too.

I love Mobb Deep but ummm record sales?

This convo aint that hard. Pac had better content and talked about real life shit black
folks going through. Big was just a better flower/lyricist point blank. You can place them dudes wherever you want on your list. Only issue I have with Biggie is I think NY cats elevated him to the top too quick. Prolly because the west had took over for a min and New York needed every "great" they could claim. Both these dudes got elevated to a crazy status after being murdered. But Pac's catalogue is deserving of that. Biggie has 2 classic albums talking about fantasy shit....not ALL of it, alot though. But hey, his songs were great too :dunno:

Damn I just posted this same thing. I definitely like Pac's diversity on song content. He could do the gangster shit, but also put out deep tracks like Wonder if heaven got a ghetto and I ain't mad at cha

As far as a rapper your dead wrong about that. Biggie was better. Now as far as a generational overall better talent as an entertainer, it was Pac. I've said this for the longest Pac was on his way to being Will Smith before Will Smith. Had he not been acting so fuckin stupid he could have been in just about everything Will was in. He was that good as an actor. The movie Gang Related really showed how good he really was on screen.

Agree to disagree. Let's talk impact for a minute. Pac clearly had a larger impact. Big is nice but what was his impact on the music, the culture? At the end of the day I pick Pac you pick Big at we can agree that Drake is garbage right?

I don't think either was better. But Pac was already a seasoned rapper, activist and actor. Big had them lyrics though but even Pac(MC New York) gave Big a hot album blueprint.
did he??? really??

big had very clever wordplay, metaphors and punchlines...but his lyrical content was extremely limited. it mainly consisted of verbal violent imagery...misogynism, drug dealing and listing brand name consumerism.

I chalk all that up to basically his youth... you rap either what you know or what you're interested in and as a teenager to a young adult he was a drug dealer and caught up in all the standard youthful materialism things and he died at 25 so he didn't live long enough to really develop a broader world view. Would have been interesting to see the lyrics from 35, 45-year-old world-traveled biggie tho.
