LAS VEGAS -- NBA All-Star Weekend in Vegas was an unmitigated failure, and any thoughts of taking the extravaganza to New Orleans in 2008 are total lunacy.

An event planned to showcase what is right about professional basketball has been turned into a 72-hour display of why commissioner David Stern can't sleep at night and spends his days thinking of rules to mask what the NBA has come to represent.

Good luck fixing All-Star Weekend.

The game is a sloppy, boring, half-hearted mess. The dunk contest is contrived and pointless. The celebrity contest is unintended comedy. And, worst of all, All-Star Weekend revelers have transformed the league's midseason exhibition into the new millennium Freaknik, an out-of-control street party that features gunplay, violence, non-stop weed smoke and general mayhem.

Word of all the criminal activity that transpired during All-Star Weekend has been slowly leaking out on Las Vegas radio shows and TV newscasts and on Internet blogs the past 24 hours.

"It was filled with an element of violence," Teresa Frey, general manager for Coco's restaurant, told klastv.com. "They don't want to pay their bills. They don't want to respect us or each other."

Things got so bad that she closed the 24-hour restaurant from 2 a.m. to 4 a.m.

"I have been spit on. I have had food thrown at me," she said. "I have lost two servers out of fear. I have locked my door out of the fear of violence."

All weekend, people, especially cab drivers, gossiped about brawls and shootings. You didn't know what to believe because the local newspaper was filled with stories about what a raging success All-Star Weekend was. The city is desperately trying to attract an NBA franchise, and, I guess, there was no reason to let a few bloody bodies get in the way of a cozy relationship with Stern.

Plus, the NBA's business partner ESPN didn't have time to dirty its hands and report on the carnage. I'm sure ESPN's reporters were embedded in the rear ends of the troops -- Shaq, Kobe, King James, D-Wade, AI and Melo.

But there were multiple brawls, at least two shootings, more than 350 arrests and a lot of terror in Vegas over the weekend.

And the police might want to talk to NFL player Pacman Jones about a nasty shooting spree at a Vegas strip club. Jones and the rapper Nelly were allegedly at Minxx Gentlemen's Club Monday morning shortly before (or during) the shooting.

Two victims, male employees of the club, were listed in critical condition at the hospital; a third, a female patron, sustained non-life threatening injuries after being grazed by a bullet.

There were so many fights and so many gangbangers and one parking-lot shootout at the MGM Grand that people literally fled the hotel in fear for their safety. I talked with a woman who moved from the MGM to the Luxor because "I couldn't take it. I'll never come back to another All-Star Game."

There are reports of a brawl between rappers and police at the Wynn Hotel.

Vegas police were simply overwhelmed along The Strip. They were there solely for decoration and to discourage major crimes. Beyond that, they minded their own business.

I was there. Walking The Strip this weekend must be what it feels like to walk the yard at a maximum security prison. You couldn't relax. You avoided eye contact. The heavy police presence only reminded you of the danger.

Without a full-scale military occupation, New Orleans will not survive All-Star Weekend 2008.

David Stern seriously needs to consider moving the event out of the country for the next couple of years in hopes that young, hip-hop hoodlums would find another event to terrorize. Taking the game to Canada won't do it. The game needs to be moved overseas, someplace where the Bloods and Crips and hookers and hoes can't get to it without a passport and plane ticket.
I'm serious. Stern has spent the past three years trying to move his league and players past the thug image Ron Artest's fan brawl stamped on the NBA.

After this weekend, I'm convinced he's losing the battle. All-Star Weekend Vegas screamed that the NBA is aligned too closely with thugs. Stern is going to have to take drastic measures to break that perception/reality. All-Star Weekend can no longer remain the Woodstock for parolees, wannabe rap artists and baby's mamas on tax-refund vacations.

This was not a byproduct of the game being held in Vegas. All-Star Weekend has been on this path for the past five or six years. Every year the event becomes more and more a destination for troublemakers.

If something isn't done, next year's All-Star Weekend will surpass the deceased Freaknik, a weekend-long party in Atlanta, in terms of lawlessness. Wide-spread looting and a rape killed the Freaknik in 1999.

The NBA's image cannot survive bedlam in the French Quarter. And I'm not sure it can survive the embarrassment of a New Orleans standoff between its fans and the National Guard, either.

If Stern wants to continue to strengthen the international appeal of his game, he has the perfect excuse to move the All-Star Game to Germany, China, England or anywhere Suge Knight's posse can't find it.

Lower the ticket price.

There were four shootings the whole time I was there. A fire when I arrived and somebody got hit by a car. But I thought violence was a regular in the place they call Sin City.

I love white fear. Funniest article I heard all day.

I hope david stern listens to this article and totally white-washes the NBA. Then maybe some of these mega-rich ex players will start there own league instead of spending all there money at casinos and golf courses. I mean at what point will the black players get tired of catering to a fan base that fears at hates them.

It is.

But you should already know that when the NBA comes to town, EVERYTHING is gonna get blamed on black folks, the NBA, and the "hip-hop element" even if the crime statistics reflects a normal weekend in Las Vegas.

And fuck this Whitlock character, dude was one of the biggest coons (literally) on TV

Nevada had one of the highest gun crimes rates in the country before the all star game.
It has become freaknik, and with the "AMerican" culture of violence something will eventually happen, but I aint pussy Im goin next year too!!

i love basketball and hip hop but lets call a spade a spade people..lol...them fuckin entourages and shit and these fake ass gangstas be fuckin shit up...lol...and them ticket prices...good lord...lets just say i partied all weekend cause good..the nose bleeds is like $600...what in the titty fuck is up wit that...i guess they need that cake to pay off the dunk contest..lol...im not sure if im goin to the N.O next year...that shit is up in the air like a mf'er

I don't know to much about Whitlock but I googled him an article came up that was decidedly anti-coonish. He pulled T.O. and scoop jacksons card. I might have to check out his book. Always saw his fat ass on the sports reporters and assumed he was an idiot like the rest of them. But he was saying some interesting things in the article I read.

Tillery: Was there real animosity between you and Scoop Jackson (ESPN contributor)?

Whitlock: Scoop was bojangling for dollars, and I taxed him for it. If he continues, he’ll get taxed again. He was hired for the specific purpose of bojangling — “go write something that has that ghetto feel.” The dude is in his 40s and isn’t remotely street. He should know better. Do I have animosity toward Scoop? No. He just needed to be stopped before he wrote another article suggesting that Black kids stand a better chance of making the NBA than landing a job as a sportswriter.

Tillery: What did you make of the frenzied media assault around T.O. and his accidental overdose/suicide attempt?

Whitlock: T.O. likes to bojangle, so the media treated him like a bojangler.

Decent article

If I remember correctly, he got fired from ESPN in part because of those comments.
That guy will stand up for every white athlete and roast every black athlete every fucking time :smh:

I agree that some of these knuckleheads fuck up shit and make things look bad for everyone

But some of this is just pure "white paranoia"

All Star Weekend was here in Houston last year and there were no big problems here but of course the white folks were all scared that hell would break loose anyway.
They called it "Hip-Hop Weekend" and still tried to complain about shit even though nothing happened

If only one person got arrested at All Star weekend, white folks would still be complaining

SOME OF MY PEEPS WERE THERE AND TOLD ME THAT THEY SHUT THE AIRPORT DOWN BECAUSE TWO CHICKS WERE IN THERE BRAWLING
THERE WERE AT LEAST THREE SHOOTINGS
ONE HAPPENED IN THE MIDDLE OF A CASINO
AND FIGHTS WERE BREAKING OUT REGULARLY.

I guess nothing happened at the Daytona 500 this year :smh:

Oh shit wrong example :smh: Just keeping it real I guess :(

I hate to say it but this so called hip hop thing is killing our culture. I really think there will be a class war amongst black people. And yes you can blame hip hop because this kind of stuff never goes down at Essence or any black event that doesn't involve hip hop or outside the country. Why??? Because they never have hip hop acts. Unless it's Kanye or that style of rapper. If most events at All Star weekend have a dress code, that would kill the hip hop element. I don't see why no one has figured that out yet. I'm scared to see what happens in New Orleans next year.

Thats the kinda shit that disgust me about white people. I believe the next AllStar is in Miami I can imagine what the new headlines would insinuate next year. :smh:

Yeah. Shit was crazy. I didn't hear about the airport incident but it doesn't surprise me. They even shot up the Wyn hotel.

I was just about to go to the Walmart near the hotel when I heard they're was a shooting their, walked over and sure enough somebody got laid out. :smh:

"I was there. Walking The Strip this weekend must be what it feels like to walk the yard at a maximum security prison. You couldn't relax. You avoided eye contact. The heavy police presence only reminded you of the danger."

that's what this entire article was about. fear of blacks justified by a few isolated incidents of violence....the same type of sheit that happens in vegas all the time when you mix all-night liquor availability with gambling.....especially those who are losing their money.

i was there the entire weekend and the first 3 days it was a beautiful thing. black folks walkin up and down the strip showing each other love. flirting. hooking up. being respectful. NOBODY was trippin. everything started flippin on MONDAY morning (early like between 2 a.m. and 6 a.m.) when the all-star games were all over.

that whole 'prison' reference the writer made is straight racist. if he was really there, the only thing he could've seen was a bunch of black folks hanging out, being friendly and chillin. but he slides in all kinds of racist, inflamatory bullsheit in his article. ole beatch. fuk him. mutha fukka

I FOUND THIS ON ANOTHER MESSAGE BOARD AND I AGREE WITH ALOT OF WHAT THIS GUY HAS TO SAY

Hi-- I have been reading many of the messages on this board and it sure is a touchy subject. Here are brief points I am going to make:

1) When crowds of people get together, for some reason folks' worst impulses-- which by their nature are uncivilzed-- come to the surface. This is not limited to black people. Embarrassing, crude, and dangerous behavior is applicable to all social groups.

2) The nature of the sport itself has changed for the worse in the last fifteen years-- what was once a beautiful and flowing team sport with toughness and grace has devolved into a "look at me" playground exhibition, replete with an almost total deterioration of fundamental basketball skills. It seems that traveling, palming, bunny-hops and moving picks are in place to make the game more "entertaining."

3) The culmination of this deterioration is the foolishness of the All-Star game. Suggestion: make the game mean something, like what MLB has done. Conference who wins gets the extra home game in the Finals. The MVP of the present All-Star game? What a joke.

4) By turning the game into pure "entertainment" instead of genuine sport you are going to attract the wrong sort of people. (Are you listening David Stern?)

4a) I love Charles Barkley but he is wrong when he says he is not a role model. Any adult male or female by definition of being an adult has the obligation of being a role model. Leading by example is where it's at. Fame and higher visibility is no excuse. Leading by example is how you build a civilised society.

4b) If decent black men and women don't stand up and lead by example then by default you get "Hip Hop" culture as de facto exemplars-- that's wrong. The lions and lionesses are displaced by hyenas and jackals.

5) The NBA must reverse its rules with regard to age. When you have a chance to go to college and get a degree this is something that will serve you the rest of your life. College is also the place where one can get the proper coaching to come to the NBA a more complete player. Those families who suffer hardship and look at a young and gifted black male son or as their ticket out should at least consider that an educated black man is of more benefit to black society than a rich ignorant black man.

Just some thoughts and I apologize in advance if anybody finds these remarks offensive in any way. On the contrary I want to do my part and be useful to others. Good luck to you.

It;s fucking vegas, sin city what the hell did you expect, a bunch degenerate gamblers, drunks, already live there, now you add more degenerate and drunks coming for all star weekend, what did they think was going to happen.

And i don't hear this shit when it's mardi gras time, and motherfuckers are drunk as hell for a whole dam week starting brawls ever other minute, have you watched an episode cops Mardi Gras. This shit make me sick...

:smh: that all i can muster right now about this bullshit article. do you guys really think that the superbowl weekend is one big family values fest where everyone holds prayer meetings, or what about mlb all star game.
when it comes to debauchery negroes have nothing on white people, trust me i went to a white undergrad.

I know I am quoting myself but I did some research on Whitlock. I found something interest. Just what I said above he basically said the same thing. Here is his quote:

"America is on the verge of a new civil-rights movement, a cultural revolution that will see intelligent, responsible African-Americans stand against the rap music, gangster idiots who are defining black culture as pro-drug dealing, anti-education, condoning of unmarried babies having babies and in love with random violence, disrespect toward women and the N-word."

I swear he is on point and I can relate with this brotha.

be careful with whitlock yall, he's like a pretty girl with a big butt and the brain of a peapod...a total curveball. ive followed him for quite some time and he was supposed to be the heir-apparent to ralph wiley on espn's page 2, but he is NOT to be trusted because for every article he writes to support barry bonds, he shits on 3 more black athletes and takes a total white stance on issues and im not talking about just pointing out t.o. being an asshole, but more like making excuses for larry brown, etc...

the guy has a problem with hiphop culture and many black issues, which is why he threw scoop under the bus like a good coon always does (check scoops response...dignity is all i can say) when it all comes down to it, he's still black, but im almost starting to think this is a gimmic with him because he ALWAYS hits you with some off the wall shit. the other side of me thinks he's just a fat boy who was a square growing up, so he just doesnt know. that line about fearing walking through a prison yard is complete bullshyt. anyone who was there, unless you were on a suspect strip late at night, it was one big party with people for the most part keeping it moving. memorial day in southbeach was way worse than this.

monday, he said it was ghetto fab, today it was ww3. i know fatlock's game though, this was a complete setup so he can point back and say he told everyone so because the game is in new orleans next year. i even know thats going to be a disaster because of the crime and landscape of the city for such a large event. its just a damn shame he's using his own people to boost his sensationalism. :(

I was there and seen all the white people checking out early sat morning. Everytime I noticed white people scared to walk into large crowds of blacks chillen not bothering no one.. What do u expect when u have 300000 blacks flying in sin city.. I doesnt take a rocket scientist to tell u the locals where there the ones doing the shootings..

I talked to alot of cats from compton chillen out side out the tellys they said they aint never seen vegas pop like that.. Im retiring from big weekends like that cause I can say I seen it all aint no event ever going to top that 1... Oh ya im retiring from gambling 2 i aint even playing scratch offs ne more..

yes there was the regular ole drama but shyt wasnt that serious. i seen whites with there kids walkin around at night. man the media aint shyt!

You are 100% correct..From what I saw from Thrusday thru Sunday afternoon/night it was nothing but love and blacc folks getting along for the most part and just enjoying the city...there were a few isolated incidents that happened, but that is to be expected....alot of the shit they talking about is hearsay and rumors...I got folks calling me from L.A. asking me about some rumors they heard about out there about the weekend that are 100% false...There 362 arrest out of how many of hundreds of thousands of people...Considering all the gangs and thugs that were in town from Oakland & L.A....shiet I say the weekend was damn near flawless....It was all about fear and Vegas (like most cities) didn't appreciate the blacc dollars

Ahh... pics! I gotta couple Vegas pics myself. Perhaps I'll post a few too.

BMF by far was the deepest Niggas out there. On the first night we were 40 deep, 2 dudes that was wit us that wasn't even from BMF got in a brief scuffle...the other dudes got punched in the eye but the Big Homie put that fire out real quicc. We took over a bar at Mandalay Bay and the MGM, we ain't fucc wit no club because the Bitches was on us up n down the strip.

2nd night we were 60 deep with no problems. We took over a bar at the Wynn. Gold diggers were in full throttle and juss got prolly a drink or 2 but they definitely got the dicc.   Still ain't fucc wit no clubs cuz the broads was on us in the casino. No incidents.

3rd night....along wit Thizz Nation (J-Diggs) we were 140 deep!!!! Bleu and him were supposed to perform but they wouldn't let us all in and Niggas got strict rules of all or none. Took over the whole fuccin Casino at the Wynn. Had D Wade kiccin in wit us, Bernard Hopkins, and some other lame as NBA cats. No incidents!!!!

Bottom line is, wit all the fly ass Bitches that were out there, you gotta be one big faggot ass fruitcake if you were thinkin bout other N1gg@s. I had a ball!!!! Bitches got fucced, Kush got smoked, Thizz got Thizzed and dranks got dranked. We need to stop all that bullshit and get $$$.

But this type of shit gives closet racist the chance to vent.

Supposedly a lot of the arrests were from "trespassing"

Trespassing where?

If you've got a bunch of out-of-towners, how are they supposed to know where you can't and can enter?

I'm not defending the ignorant behavior that I'm sure occurred, but a lot of this shit seems to be overblown and a product of white paranoia.

When numerous arrests (of drunken white folks) are made during Mardi Gras, does the "hip-hop element" also come into blame?

Yeah probably but what good will it serve when the real war continues to be against us all...white folks ain't really trying all that hard to differentiate one nigga from the next...I want to leave this country desperately...the question is where though...things are not looking good for us at all...and it has nothing to do with the behavior of a few Black fools but the fact that we bend over backwards and take it as we allow those actions to categorize our whole race as dictated by white folks...as weak as some of us are mentally we "deserve" to be slaves...

REAL SHIT HERE  . don't know what the hell it's gonna take because so much CRAZINESS has already happened, you'd think ninjas like ? would do that shit. Maybe Magic, but Sir Charles? MJ? David Robinson has a school, but these cats in another realm of tax brackets so they just stay loyal to some cracka they met along the way.

I think a lot of them like having the white man's attention, some more than others kissing jews and zebras alike

I wouldn't say overblown, you just have to look at it from a different perspective. Unlike most big cities that host these types of events Vegas only has two places you can go. The Strip and the Downtown area. So ANY type of shit that pops off is going to seem 5X worse than it would in a normal city. When they have the All-Star game in a city like L.A. people can spread out and go to different places around the city. When stuff happens it's not automatically associated with the even going on.

People are going to act a ass at any large event. vegas is notorius anyway, but this reminds me of the bullshit "controversy" in Atlanta (ASW 2003) about the players ball. Anytime a bunch of young niggas get togther to have fun its always blown out of proportion. So yeah this is Str8 racist "ofay" propaganda to the fullest.

I'm in Atlanta, and the Black radio and sports personalities that went to Vegas for the weekend reported here all week how bad things were...most of it was due to bad planning...its like planning for a party of about 100 folks and 10,000 show up at the door...you're going to have major problems...not enough security presence and no traffic cops to keep the traffic moving through the city....no one planned for half of California to show up for the weekend, plus there was a convention there the week before so many of those folks stayed around for the All Star parties....it was just a problem of too many people in a small area and not enough accomodations for them....restaurants and bars couldn't handle the unexpected crowds, and of course you add to that many young, disrespectful hip hoppers and gang bangers and you have a recipe for disaster....there were reports of hotel lobbies overflowing into the streets , women being groped and activity on the street reminiscent of "Freaknic"....what we need to realize is that too many Black folks don't plan in advance and reserve rooms and accomodations for the event, then we show up on the day of the event wondering why we can't into the event or get any service.... the city was overwhelmed....but of course Vegas is trying to attract an NBA team there so you didn't hear any major reports about the violence/problems that went on.....but trust me what they talked about here on the local radio stations was unbelievable...but please stop blaming White folks for bad Black behavior...take responsibility for your own actions...
....as for Jason Whitlock, never been a fan of his, he's usually on the wrong side of the issues, but in this case he was 100% correct...

Man why the hell they want them to make the all star game meaningful. I thought MLB was dumb as hell for doing that, it's a fucking exhibition game that should have no bearing on the regular season or playoffs. Why white folks want to make it "mean something"???? Shut the fuck up and watch the game. How is making it "mean something" going to attract a different crowd??? that is one of the dumbest things i've read.

The weekend is for the players and fans to just have a good time. The west team was just plain better than the east, thats why you had the blowout.....people expect it to be this 77-76 nail biter, that aint happenin.
