You do know that Seagate owns Maxtor right.

Last time these were on sale people were saying that they were getting rebadged Seagates.

Even if it's an ATA drive, I'll take Western Digital over Maxtor any day of the week. Perhaps their quality was improved over the years, but back in the day they were down right shitty.

Any hard drive can fail. But, I have had better luck with the more reliable brands. Then again, as cheap as hard drives and dual layer DVDs are nowadays, there is no excuse not to back your shit up.

what does ATA/IDE stands for?

(Parallel) Advanced Technology Attachment. It's an older standard for computer buses, and it's being replaced with SATA (Serial Advanced Technology Attachment).

IDE (Integrated Drive Electronics) describes the same thing as ATA (now called PATA)

If it can be connected to your system by the black retangular cord that goes from your motherboard to hard drives/cd drives it's ide. I've never seen something that connects ata but it's another way of pluging something into your system.

i have this old cat that put in a motherboard for me, he buys things at wholesale price, so i will check with him tomorrow.

Do ya'll know anything about video cords, and grahic cards, cause as you see im looking to redo this thing, and well i have this old dude, i need to jump on it.

i already own 5 external western digital hard drives and i just bought the 5th one yesterday 500gb , i never had any problems

What drives does LaCie use? Seagate? WD?

I wouldn't have said fuck Maxtor off top, but listening to these folks, then remembering that my first external HD was maxtor and crashed within 6 months, and that the IOGEAR one I replaced it with has been chuggin along for nearly 3 years know w/o a hitch....

I'ma go head and throw in with the fuck Maxtor crowd.
(unless they are now ALL rebranded Seagates)

Man...ya'll must be doing something wrong. I have used Maxtor drives for many years and have never had a problem. personal computers and for my music shit which gets very intensive use. not one problem.

^Im sure that they couldn't stay in business if every HD they shipped was defective.
But as a whole, it seems they ship more shitty (or delicate) drives than most other manufaturers.

i personally wont use lacie external hardrives any more. when i purchased two of my first externals from em and i didnt realize the bitches didnt have some type of ventilation vents to cool down. fuckers would get overheated fast as hell and both ended up in disc failure in under 3 months. i been using using western digital for the past 3 years and seagate recently. their e-sata300 externals are great and for 500gbs at $139 @ compusa aint bad either..
