Mase sold his publishing to Puff for 20K when he was 19. Offered 2 million, Puff said fuck off

And he charged them rental fees to have his mansion and cars in their videos too.
Woodchuck you probably seen it all. I wonder why no one started an artist friendly company. Kind of like a walmart version of the record business.

This would be "Business as usual" if Diddy wasn't coming at others for the same practices. This letter didn't see like Mase bitching, or Mase coming at Diddy. Seemed more like a little brother checking his older brother to stand by his word. To lead by example. To not be a hypocrite. Diddy can't be coming at the industry when he's part of Industry Rule #4080 himself
Fair enough

they got on by selling themselves out...
rollout of first single to album and first real media run they fall in love with fame and fantasy

swearing shit will last forever - easily manipulated by anything that feeds the ego

Bert Bedell dropped jewels on everyone tha6t sat in his office and 99% were deaf...

none of them were counting money or asking about budgets-
as soon as the business manager first tells them they are short on the rental or mortgage money
the publishing rights were sold

even now aint a damn thing changed - because 99% of these artists desire fame over everything - until its too late or almost over...

thats why the rare exceptions that really grew and have long careers are so different by how they came in focused on the music and LISTENING to old heads on watching $$ and looking out to flip business and branding independent of what labels and management companies bring to the table

The "Real" Reason Diddy Has Not "Worked With" Ma$e!

There are two sides to every story and here are the rumors in Diddy's defense.

SHARE COPY LINK TWEET

(AllHipHop Rumors) It is very hard for me to defend Diddy in light of what Mase has posted on his social media. Remember Mase was one of Diddy's main artists on Bad Boy Records, particularly after B.I.G. died. He was the pop star that helped propel Diddy to where he is today - a near-billionaire!
So, now Mase wants his publishing and is kicking up a whole bunch of dust for his former label head, Sean "Diddy" Combs. Is there another side? Before I say that we have to say that a lot of artists have complained about Diddy for years. Just about all of them have had something to say. The Lox used to talk about "Raping You Records" in relationship to Bad Boy Records. The list goes on and on. Mase is a unique one though.

Here is what I am hearing about the relationship between Diddy and Mase is complex. The ending...why did Mase leave the rap game? Over 20 years ago - on April 20, 199- Mason Betha left the rap game. "I gotta do what make me happy. A lot of people gonna say I'm crazy, I'm leaving money behind and a lot of things but it's just how I feel in my heart. Once God puts something in your heart–you know, God talks to everyone different," Mase said.
Now, I always was told that there was a God-clause in Mase's contract where he could leave and maintain his riches from Bad Boy if he left for religious reasons. Mase would go on to some success as a preacher under Creflo Dollar. Apparently, Tia and Tamara Mowry got him to turn to God. Mase left the game for about 5 years before coming back. It is my understanding that he "took" Diddy for millions with he left to be a preacher.
So, Diddy MAY feel that he is owed money and the only way to get back what he is owed is to retain ownership of his publishing. Remember that is the deal that Mase and his lawyer negotiated many years ago in the 90s. He may not have gotten a fair deal but he certainly had better times than I will ever experience, to be reallllllly real.

Did Mase swindle Diddy when he left and then offer to buy back his publishing essentially on a discount (compared to what he got away with)? That is the way the source is describing it. If you get away with $6 and offer back $2....don't expect the dude to take that deal. Hey, I can't call it, b. I would certainly be able to live off the money Mase had.

Ma$e writes exactly how he speaks.....

Wasn't it tribe/tip that said industry rule #4080, record company people are shady? Damn shame on both sides, Puff for being like that and the others for signing on to it, but I know it's how it was and probably still is.
Anybody remember that season of Making the Band where Dylon & Crew got presented with contracts and I think only the chick Sarah(?) was worried about signing without having a lawyer check it out first?

This is what happens when black men learn business practices from white men. Berry Gordy was the same. if you wrote something and you were on his label, he wrote it. The only ones who caught a break was Smokey Robinson and Holland Dozier Holland. Damn near everybody else got fucked.

The music business is a pimp hoe business. Many young black people are in debt or simply want to flash. They only think of the present and not the future, so puffy and any other label treats them like the desperate people they are.

I'm a writer, and I let a woman read one of my short stories and she tried desperately to get me to sign up under her Publishing company, and said I could have a house under her company. I thought, "WTF do I need you for?"

You've got to recognize game, because like an 18 year old girl with big titties and a small waist everybody is trying to fuck

Puff learned from Andre Harrell, who learned from Russell who learned from them white boys how to take advantage of artist. Lest we forget Suge had to go to Uptown and rough up Andre Harrell to get Mary J and Jodeci released from some terrible contracts. Suge gets looked at as the bad guy, but he assisted many artist get out of contracts and secure portions of their publishing back by using money and fear tactics.

does Mase have his Harlem World publishing? i dont think Mase is an angel. i still ike and will support his music if he drops but..

This isn't part how it happens:

You're an artist, and you were signed to a bad contract. It's ironclad, and you're fucked.

So, you start your own label and do unto others what was done to you.

That's half of it.

For people like Diddy, he just saw how it was done and saw the people around him get rich so he continued the same practices.

Thinking back, do you remember when Chingy confronted Ludacris about screwing with his royalties and numbers?

Ludacris said, go get your fucking lawyer. Chingy brought his lawyer, and they combed through everything to find that Ludacris didn't screw him over at all...

then he promptly told the fucker to get the fuck out of his office and kick them off his label and we haven't heard from Chingy since Holiday Inn... Maybe he's working at one

You don't have to screw over people just because you're the man in charge now. But, in America they call it business, capitalism. When in reality, it's just screwing over the little man who doesn't know any better.

It's giving a starving man a Ritz cracker. He thinks you gave him a meal and he's grateful... When you just gave him a fucking Ritz cracker.

by the time he realizes that you made a shit ton of money off of him and all he got was a cracker, you're rich as fuck and he's broke as fuck...still...but he's famous...which is worth...fuck all

Business is a risk. You cannot ask for advance and give nothing in return. It's risk and artist who made the choice give up the rights to publishing.

Puff released the Lox and years later they were back onstage with Puff smiling and dancing like it was still the early 2000's.

Man, 50 went crazy on Jimmy..... and you're right...a lesser artist....man they would've been back in their momma's basement.

True Suge did that, but he also tried to hold Dre's masters over his head, he tried to keep Snoop hostage....and hell Kurupt, Daz, Nate ..etc all eventually complained about Suge not paying royalties and wanting exorbitant fees to release artists.

u still got my publishing from 24 years ago in which u gave me $20k.

Nothing more needs to be said

For all of you that think like @Star , let's pose this scenario.

I am a new artist. You believe in my talent and loaned me money to buy materials to create. This is money in which I need to repay. I painted a few pictures. You offer me $100.00 for each picture, even though I have never painted before and despite me being a new artist. 20 years later, the paintings are worth 1 million. Should you give me my paintings back?

Hindsight is 2020. It's easy to say artists should get 100% of publishing because most are only looking at a small sample of those who became successful. But, what about all of the artist who were not successful? There are way more artist who received advances, who sold their publishing, and racked up substantial costs who went nowhere. Should labels sue artists to get those unrecouped funds?

You can not utilize a hundredaire's mentally to millionaire situations.

That shit and the fact the Nig would step in a producer studio and press 2 or 3 buttons and than claim he helped produce that beat is top 5 funny fuckery displays from puff... Nig will show up to the artist vid in his whip than tell the cameraman to shoot him for like 5 mins while he lays on the door of his car doing hand gestures and moving his lips and say put that part in the vid... Than later on charge them for thousands for that cameo.. That fuckery is so over the top it could be a skit

Look at all the "brothers" in this thread that deflect for WS in the record industry wit the "what about black execs" talk. Most black entertainers are PUSSY when it comes to white folks with checks.
