BALTIMORE (WJZ) — A bill moving through the Maryland General Assembly—passed in the House—would make daylight saving time permanent in the state.

Days after moving our clocks forward, many are still getting used to the time difference.

“It affects everything, like your sleep,” said Danielle, a resident of Baltimore.

“This week, I’m all screwed up,” Baltimore resident Erika said.

State lawmakers are now pushing for permanent daylight saving time.

House Bill 126 was introduced in January and passed in the House in February. It could move on to the Senate as early as next week.

But it needs surrounding states to do the same, like Virginia and New York.

“Not every surrounding state is on track for this, but there are a bulk of them with bills in their House Legislature,” said Del. Brian Crosby (D-St) of Mary’s County who is behind the bill. “If New York does it, I think the rest fall.”

A similar bill last year didn’t get this far.

One big concern then still holds true now, fear for students and their morning commute.

“The school start times would be adversely affected by daylight saving time and students would be traveling to school in the dark,” Crosby said.

But their belief that brighter nights are even better is stronger.

“Crime is lower when there is more sunlight in the evening,” Crosby said.

“Normally, people in the mornings are just going to work inside an office with light so it would be good to have that daylight when we are outside trying to actually do stuff,” Baltimore resident Melbin Rivera said.

But Dr. Francoise Marvel, a Cardiologist at Johns Hopkins Medicine and volunteer with the American Heart Association said changing time twice a year creates the biggest health risks, “leading to higher rates of heart attacks and strokes in our population.”

According to the American Heart Association, scientific research shows the time change that accompanies Daylight Saving Time may negatively impact your heart and brain health.

And a future without changing the clocks is one many would rather not have to make time for.

“It’s something less we have to keep track of,” Rivera said.

This bill is contingent on two things; if surrounding states agree to vote to do the same thing and second, the federal government must also amend its time code.

Go for it.

I wake up 330 to 4am anyway now and I was never a morning person. I just like finishing my work day around 12.

I had to set my clock back an hour last Sunday so I didn’t fuck up my schedule.

That’s going to feel weird as shit unless Virginia and DC does it too. Lol.
LOL...that would be wild...saying 11 o clock my time or your time to a joker on the other side of Eastern Avenue

Nah the surrounding states would have to be down with it, which I believe they are. I think DST was really only beneficial to farmers. I don’t know it’s purpose outside of trying to squeeze the solstices.

You would have to get the DMV to do it. My Youngest goes to school in Va but we live in MD, so he would potentially get up an hr earlier togo school that's 23min away from us. Let's say you're going from Springfield, cross the WW bridge (you cell phone will change time, and then you take 295 into the city, your shty will change again, all within 3mins. LOL

I heard this on the news, stop fucking with the time and leave as is cause the time changing is how I know it's winter time.

I get up early and I hate it being dark at 6 AM. I actually like Daylight savings. I like it dark at 5:30. The freaks come out at night!!!

Yeah I read that the other day that the Senate passed a bill to permanently keep daylight savings time the same. So it's most likely will be implemented nationwide.

Someone already wrote and Op-Ed talking about they didn't think this through and that we should be stuck on Standard time instead of DST. I work from home so IDGAF but I would like to not have to set these stupid clocks. We still have until next year.

It's stupid
don't keep it at this time keep it at the time we just came from
people gonna cheer it until they're going to work at 9am and it's pitch black outside

Brah...I don't go to work til 10 or 11 everyday...I wish I had more daylight...at night... than in the morning...so I can bullshit more at night...I can guarantee you in our life time... everyone will be working banking hours...

Yeah. Virginia is a separate state with it’s own general assembly. Then DC has its own council but something like this would be left up to the Feds for DC. However, Virginia is talking about doing the same thing.

You like it being sunny at 9 PM? I hate that shit. Hawaii has none of this and it be year around daylight till like 8. When I was a kid that was the shit but as an adult that dabbles in shenanigans I need darkness

I gotta have it...The too goon known as Killamayne never sleep before 1am... brah

The biggest drawback seems to be the safety of children, which is understandable. However, school schedules can change before the actual time has to. If it gets too dark in the morning, states could always push to a delayed opening to accommodate the kids. Start later and get out later during the months with less light.

The DMV has DC, MD and VA, Philly has people New Jersey in and outta there, while NYC has Jersey and CT folks in and out the city regularly. Massachusetts and Rhode Island are similar respectively.

Our states are all smaller, densely populated and close to each other. It’s very common to live in one place and work or school in another.

We don’t have the space of a Montana or Texas lol
