Disney has set a May 1, 2015 release date for the untitled sequel to Marvel's "The Avengers."
The news arrives a week after the studio announced Joss Whedon will return to write and direct the follow-up to the $1.46 billion blockbuster as part of an exclusive deal that will keep him at the studio through June 2015. In addition to the sequel, he'll develop a new live-action Marvel Television series for ABC and "contribute creatively to the next phase of Marvel’s cinematic universe.”
"The Avengers," which premiered May 4 in North America, went on to become the third-highest grossing film of all time, behind only "Titanic" and "Avatar."
Marvel is now filming "Iron Man 3," which will open May 3, 2013, to be followed by "Thor: The Dark World" (Nov. 8, 2013), "Captain America: The Winter Soldier" (April 4, 2014) and "Guardians of the Galaxy" (Aug. 1, 2014).
